Hello,
I have Windows XP, my computer is a Packard Bell bought very recently.
Having downloaded a movie on eMule, I would like to burn it onto a blank DVD-R 4.7 GB 120 min 1-8x speed.
However, when I insert the blank DVD into the drive, nothing happens.
I am asked to insert a blank CD.
I bought this computer very recently, did I forget to download software?
Did I forget to "activate" my burner?
I have Windows Media Player for burning, I should normally have the Windows XP burning wizard by default, but it doesn't start.
I installed NERO 5.5 Burning Rom, I tried to burn with it, but it seems like it burned "into the void."
What should I do for my blank DVD to be detected?
Thank you for your responses.

In general, Packard Bell PCs have burners that do not recognize DVD-R; you need to buy DVD+R and you will see no more issues... @later..

Thank you for your response, but guess what?
The blank DVDs I have are... DVD+R!
Indeed, I hadn't noticed the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R!
So my computer doesn't detect the DVD+R!
Furthermore, when I go to the computer, my drive is named either "CD drive (D:)" or "DVD-RW drive (D:)"
Does this mean that my drive only recognizes DVD-R and not DVD+R?
Just a reminder that my drive recognizes Verbatim blank CDs...

Good evening!
The first thing to do is to buy a quality disc, a Verbatim for example, to check that the problem does not come from the recognition of the discs. If necessary, update your firmware by going to https://www.touslesdrivers.com/ or on the manufacturer’s website of your graphics card. Firmware updates indicate, among other things, to burners and drives which types of discs they should recognize (this allows your hardware to evolve with new features). Firmwares also help to make burners compatible with the machines on which they are installed. Can your burner read non-empty DVDs?-
Hello,
I read your response and maybe you can help me!
I also have a problem with my drive that asks me to insert a blank CD even though there is one already in!!
I have been using Roxio for a long time and usually burn CDs and DVDs without any issues! I have no problem reading CDs or DVDs!
I also have several brands of blank CDs (Verbatim, Sony, etc.) but nothing works, I can no longer burn...
Really, I don't understand...
Thank you for any information!!!
Nath- Good evening Nath,
If you haven't tried installing new burning programs and since you seem to be using suitable brands of discs, I would tend to think that your reading heads might be dirty. I'm not very familiar with the procedure to clean them manually, but there are discs sold with small brushes that are used to clean the reading heads. I've been using this kind of tool for a few years without causing any trouble to my burner. But if you have Windows XP, first try the following two procedures:
1- Check that in the Device Manager *, in the Advanced Settings of the Properties menu of the different IDE channels of the ATA/ATAPI IDE Controller, the dropdown list indeed shows the option DMA if available (sorry for the obscurity of this vocabulary, but it's hard to avoid). If this is the case, all is well; otherwise, set everything to DMA if available.
2 - If, after a restart, your discs are still not recognized, uninstall your burner in the Device Manager. Then restart. Windows should offer to reinstall your hardware. If not, go to the Control Panel and click on Add Hardware. Follow the instructions given to you.
Finally, if that didn't work, try cleaning your reading heads as I mentioned earlier.
I would appreciate it if you could let me know how it went, whether it worked or not (indicating at which step in the first case), so that I can validate or improve the advice I give. Good luck!
* You can find the Device Manager by opening System in the Control Panel, then clicking on the Hardware tab. - Thank you for all this information, Claude!
Sorry for taking so long to respond.
I followed instructions 1 and 2 but all the settings were correct.
I finally got a cleaning CD but my computer wouldn't start the program!
So I realized that it doesn't recognize blank CDs but it does read blank DVDs. It reads CDs but makes a terrible noise; I wonder if there might be a weight issue.
Anyway, the DVDs are helping me for now. My burner may have aged.
Thanks a lot for your help

Hello
Download and/or install Nero InfoTool. This program will tell you if Nero recognizes your burner and, if so, what types of discs it can read and burn.
https://www.nero.com/eng/index.php
Note that nothing particular is supposed to happen when you insert a blank CD or DVD into a burner.
For a step-by-step guide to help you burn, I suggest you check out this webpage:

Good luck! -
Hello,
thank you for your response.
My reader successfully detects the blank Verbatim CDs.
On the other hand, it reads normal DVDs well; I tried Lord of War, and it works.
Next, I went to your site.
Since my problem falls under the "burner" category, and my computer is a Packard Bell, here is the page I obtained with a list of updates that are not very convincing:
https://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_page=12&v_code=597
There you go. Personally, I think I haven't yet "woken up" my DVD burner since I just got my computer very recently. I must surely download some software or do a manipulation on Windows...
What else can we do? -
Thank you for your response, Claude Lachance.
I used Nero InfoTool and I saw some interesting things about my drive, here is what the utility indicates with the checked boxes:
- The type of drive I have is: DVD+R/RW DL Recorder
- Among the supported playback functions, there are: CD-R, CD-RW, C2 Errors, CD Text, CD+G, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM.
- Finally, among the supported writing functions: CD-R, CD-RW, Protection against interruptions, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL
That's it... Let me know if I need to check anything else...
I tried to burn my movie with Nero, it indicates that the burning was successful, yet it seems that the DVD is still blank and not detected.
In My Computer, there’s nothing...
What should I do?-
Hello
Do a search for video_ts on your computer. Maybe your movie has been encoded on your hard drive (you should always do it this way, encode first and then burn). If you find the folder I’m talking about, burn it by opening Nero express 6 and pressing DVD-Video Files, which will give you a directory structure like vob, bup, etc... Always burn a video slowly (4X for example); the burning itself doesn’t take long (about twenty minutes), but the encoding does.

Hello Nath
Have you tried updating your firmware as I suggested to Areslane? Maybe, for some obscure and malicious reason, the one on your burner has been damaged. Otherwise, it’s always possible that your burner is getting old: these things are fragile. You did try uninstalling and reinstalling it through the device manager, right? Sometimes, you have to completely shut down, unplug the device from the case, then uninstall it in the device manager, turn off, then plug the burner back in, then turn it on, then reinstall it in Windows, not forgetting to update the firmware. If none of this works, I'm out of ideas, sorry. Good luck! -

HELLO, I have the same problem. I have a Packard Bell, my DVDs are recognized and writable (DVD-RW or DVD-R)
but my CDs (CD-R) are not recognized when I insert them, it seems to load but nothing happens. I changed brands of CDs and still nothing
plus, before my CDs worked well, they would burn, and now nothing!!
Can someone please help me? -
Hello to the whole community, I registered on this site just to post the one and only possible solution... which means that all those who suggested changing the burner and said it was broken, even though it burns and reads other CDs, thanks to them anyway... so it only takes a moment to fix everything... you just needed to clean the lens with a soft cloth, don’t be afraid, go gently, and immediately the DVD is detected.
I struggled for months before finding this. Hoping this helps everyone, and if it worked, let me know. Thank you. BYE (as for formatting, that's for noobs and doesn't solve the problem, don't try it). -
