Hello,
I want to connect an old PC to my TV using a Male HDMI/Male VGA cable. I bought one on eBay since I didn't want to spend too much.
When I received the cable, I plugged it into my PC via VGA and into my TV via HDMI. However, my TV displays a message: "No signal. Please connect a cable or check the connections."
The connections are correct, and the plugs are firmly inserted in the right places... I tried this cable on other devices, and the same issue persists. For example, with another PC and a monitor:
I connect the HDMI to the PC and the VGA to the monitor (the opposite of what I want to do with the other PC); normally, the monitor should show a black screen, indicating that it has recognized the VGA connection. Yet, with the cable I just bought, it displays a message typical of not detecting a connected cable. It's as if I hadn't plugged anything into the VGA slot on the monitor at all!
After explaining my problem to the seller, he sent me a new cable without any hassle, which I just received.
And the problems... still persist with the new one!
I finally tested the cables with a multimeter: in ohmmeter mode, the value displayed on the 2 cables I have is different from 1 (continuity test OK, I believe).
So, I'm stuck: I have a fair amount of trust in the seller, a professional "PowerSettler" with a good evaluation rating; but it surprises me that both cables I received don't work at all, and I'm struggling with the coincidence; maybe I'm doing something wrong...
Could you help me?
Thank you in advance,
Adrien

Everything seems correct, but I'm not an expert...
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 14.0.1

your graphics card is not designed to convert VGA (analog) to HDMI (digital)
you need a VGA to TV adapter
example:
https://www.amazon.fr/A-Convertisseur-%C3%A9cran-pr%C3%A9sentation-convertisseur-S-Vid%C3%A9o/dp/B000X3FAJU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347627194&sr=8-2

Personal note: remember to gather information before buying without thinking!
Thanks Jong for your quick response!
But a follow-up question: why doesn't the reverse work (HDMI to VGA, my PC with HDMI output to my monitor with VGA input)? Do you also need a Digital > Analog converter for that?
Thanks again!
