Click at the top right
go to "Settings"
scroll down and you should see a section called "People"
if you're logged into your Google account on Chrome, you should see your profile under "Person 1" ...
remove "Person 1"
Now, right-click on "Pin" (the icon you navigate with) in your taskbar and "Unpin" on the second one (the one without highlight)
normally, closing the window and reopening it will fix the problem ^^

Thank you for your post, but I will explain the problem again.
I have the desktop with the Chrome icon in the taskbar. I click on it and a new additional highlighted icon appears, the first icon remains inactive.
If I open a second Chrome, the second Chrome process highlights on this second icon. The first icon only serves as a button and does not highlight.
If I detach this first icon from the taskbar, I can continue normally with the second one, but then when I close Chrome, there is no longer an icon in the taskbar.

Without uninstalling anything:

1. Identify your profile by opening chrome://version/ in a new tab
2. Go to the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
3. Delete unnecessary profiles and back up or delete the Default profile
5. Rename the profile identified in step 1 to "Default"
6. If needed, modify the chrome shortcut with --profile-directory="Default"

It's the quick launch icon, in any case it's in that location.
If you want to remove it, right-click on it and select "detach this program from the taskbar."

I think that the 2 icons of Google Chrome are a 32-bit version of Google Chrome and a 64-bit version of Google Chrome.

There are lots of chrome.exe *32 in the task manager.

The taskbar is managed by Windows; it's a bug in the registry.
There are 3 solutions:

1) Reformat the hard drive
2) Keep the 2 icons, telling yourself philosophically that it only takes one click to launch Chrome a second time
3) Launch Chrome from the desktop shortcut. He thinks we should do this with all applications and reserve the taskbar for those in use, but I don't like this solution.

So I will keep the 2 icons for now while thinking about reformatting.

So (extreme method just to try one attempt):
1-uninstall making sure to check "delete browsing data"
2-cleaning ccleaner
3-log off and log back in
4-reinstall

@emerico21 chrome does not exist in x64 and besides if you launch one architecture there’s no reason the other would start too, and it's rare to be able to install two architectures of the same program I think... I can only imagine the damage with Office but it's true that Internet Explorer can do it
