Hello,

I have retrieved (again :), a WD6400aaks-65Z7B0 hard drive
(http://www.wdc.com/en/products/catalog/).

It is detected by the BIOS, by the device manager, by the WD software, but I can’t format it, do you have any idea?
I use the manager, then a window opens asking for initialization, master boot record or GPT partition, I choose option 1.
Okay, then it tells me “the request could not be satisfied due to an I/O device error.”
I have read several posts here and there and it’s always quite vague, can you explain what it is, thank you.

For your information, the smart readings do not indicate any failure.
It is connected internally to a SATA II.

<config>Windows Vista / Firefox 10.0.2</config>

try this =)

Using Disk Management
To start Disk Management:

"Log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.
Click Start, then Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools, and double-click Computer Management.
In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window will appear. Your disks and volumes will be displayed in graphical and list view. To customize the display of your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom in the View menu, then click on the display to use. "

Procedure to format a basic volume
To format a partition, a logical drive, or a basic volume:

"In the Disk Management window, right-click on the partition or logical drive to format (or reformat), and then click Format.
In the Format dialog box, type a name for the volume in the Volume label box. Note that this is an optional step.
Click on the file system to use in the File system box. If desired, you can also change the allocation unit size on the disk, indicate whether you want to perform a quick format, or enable file and folder compression on NTFS volumes.
Click OK.
Click OK when prompted to format the volume. The formatting process will begin. "
