Hello everyone,
I have a big problem. I'm using an external hard drive of 640 GB that contains over 400 GB of my very important data. I used it yesterday during the day, but this morning when I plugged it into my PC to work, Windows is telling me that I need to format this hard drive first, which I cannot do because it contains data that is extremely valuable to me and others. I restarted the computer with this hard drive connected, but there was no change. I changed machines, but I got the same message. It is visible in the device manager. I want to point out that this hard drive has 2 partitions and it is only the largest partition (555 GB) that is not working anymore. In the end, I don't know what to do. Please help me recover all my data as it is of crucial importance.
Thank you very much in advance!
Configuration: Windows / Chrome 42.0.2311.90

Hello Nguim,
Have you thought about trying another cable, just in case?
You should check if the HDD appears in Disk Management. To access it, right-click on Computer - Manage - Disk Management. What information is displayed there (status, file system)? Is the HDD in RAW? If possible, take a screenshot.
As for data recovery, there are data recovery software options, and the Linux Live CD seems to yield good results as well. I’m sending you two articles that might help: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37640569-recuperer-des-donnees-sur-disque-dur-et-cle-usb
https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/24285-recuperer-ses-donnees-personnelles-avec-toutou-linux
Good luck!

If you found the answer to your question, feel free to mark the topic as resolved; this could help others facing the same issue :)-
This hard drive appears well in the file manager. I also just tried this command CHKDSK L: /r and here is the result I got:
The file system type is NTFS.
The first NTFS boot sector is unreadable or damaged.
Reading the second NTFS boot sector instead.
Unable to determine the version and status of the volume. Aborting CHKDSK. -
So the hard drive is showing up in Disk Management. It's also important to know what information is indicated there - status, file system, etc. A screenshot would be helpful to clearly identify the situation.
The chkdsk indicates that the hard drive is failing. Have you had time to run the tests with the manufacturer's diagnostic software?
To recover the data, you would probably need to try the data recovery software mentioned in the articles I shared in my first message. If nothing works, it may be possible to hand over the drive to a data recovery company, but for that, a certain budget should be planned...- By the Grace of GOD, my problem has been resolved. I used EaseUS data recovery.
Thank you very much to everyone!
