1. Download

2. Decompression

cd /usr/local sudo tar xzvf $HOME/firefox-2.0.tar.gz

3. Add Firefox to the menu

In the Applications/Menu Editor Alacarte you will add the application that has just been installed (firefox 2.0)

If Alacarte is not installed in a console type

sudo apt-get install alacarte

The use of the Alacarte menu editor is simple and intuitive.

You choose the Internet submenu of the Applications menu and then go to File Menu/New Entry
In the window that opens you click on Browse and double click on File System (on the left in the window) and then on the right you go to /usr/local/firefox select firefox and click on Open.
You must give a name to your application (for example firefox2.0)

The solution you propose allows for installing Mozilla in French, but it's a complete installation....
Do we have to uninstall the old version? Can't we just download a file that acts as a translator like with Opera?

The simplest method is to leave the browser in English, but it takes someone as bad as me at English about 3 days to adapt....

Launch Synaptic and install the language packages FR-FR for your desktop environment (kde, gnome, xfce, etc ...)
for kde it's a package like this;
then do the same for mozilla/firefox.

I don't know if you managed to solve your problem, but if not, here is the simplest solution in my opinion:
System Menu -> Administration -> Language Support (or Linguistic Support)

Then it will ask you to install packages, do so, and then check French and apply.
