display issue: colored pixel lines

Question

Hello everyone,
so, for about a month now, I've had a vertical blue pixel bar that appeared on my Dell laptop screen. A few days later, a green one appeared (5cm further to the right), then a red one, and today another green one has shown up. Do you know how to fix this problem? Do you think the issue comes from the screen or the graphics card? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
p.s: on a white background, these lines are not visible. On a blue background, for example, the blue is not visible.
Unfortunately, I can't do a screenshot....
My laptop is no longer under warranty (it's almost two years old)

Generally, there are not many solutions:
either it's a screen driver issue. We reload it and it works (or we do a restoration)
or it's an electronic problem with the panel. And there, it’s a screen replacement.

So first try to restore and/or reload the driver before taking your PC for repair.

Hello, I also have this problem with my HP Pavilion zd7380ea laptop.

I'm currently at a good forty lines (Awesome!!!)

To determine if it's the screen or the graphics card, one thing to do is connect an external screen to your PC. If the lines appear on the external screen, then it's the GPU; if there are no lines, it's your laptop screen.

For me, it’s my screen that’s the issue, noting that the pixels are not black, which makes me think they aren't dead. It could be a connection problem with the ribbon cables. Constantly opening and closing the laptop's "lid" can wear out the connection cables.

I haven't repaired it yet, and I'm not 100% sure of my diagnosis, so if you have more information, feel free to let me know.

I have exactly the same problem, after displaying a photo there are remaining lines of pixels on the screen. The problem disappears for a few weeks and then comes back. It doesn't happen on "any wallpaper." I changed the graphics card and the screen, but the problem is still present. The PC was taken to a repair shop; they couldn't find the solution. I've had the same problem for a few days (a blue line, one pixel wide, running the entire height of the screen), I have an HP zd8000. For me, it's definitely the screen that's affected because the line appears as soon as I turn it on, before Windows starts.
I've looked into getting it fixed, and if the laptop is no longer under warranty, it will cost 600€ at Fnac!!!

Hi everyone, I see I’m not the only one having this problem..  On my side, I also have a vertical blue line on the far right of my LCD screen (this is on a desktop PC). The problem appeared when I returned from vacation at the beginning of August (the PC had been inactive for 5 weeks), then the line disappeared and then reappeared.  In my case, the blue line (for now at least) appears during the screensaver (Windows with a black background), at Windows startup, and when I use Windows Media Player in full screen.

Well, I also have more and more lines on my HP ZD8000. I think it’s generally the screen that’s to blame. I need to motivate myself, back up all my data, and then get the screwdriver out! Hello, I have the same problem as you; I have about 40 to 50 lines on my screen and it's getting annoying!! I have an HP Pavilion zd8015e. On the HP website, you can talk to someone who works at HP, and according to him, it can only be the screen or the graphics card. To see if it's the screen, you need to connect it to another screen (check with Tazwin for the rest). And to see if it's Windows, you need to go into the BIOS, but I have lines there too, so it's not Windows.. The repair would cost between 400 EUR and 500 EUR according to HP, so it's not really worth it since my PC is only worth about 600 to 700 EUR... However, buying a part on eBay and replacing it yourself could be reasonable since it won't cost too much and it could be fun to tinker with your computer! According to a technician, the cause is that I put things like books on my screen when it's closed (whether it's on or off) or that I dropped it, which is not the case. My first line appeared when I was reinstalling Windows XP, so I thought it was Windows, but I quickly realized it wasn't, and my warranty had expired.. So if you still have the warranty, use it because the repair is expensive!!! If you find a way to fix this for not too much money, please let me know!  Best regards.

I have exactly the same problem with my phone; a first line appeared, then a second one about 3 or 4 days ago. I noticed that depending on the position of the screen, they would appear or disappear.

So I conclude that it doesn't come from the GPU and that the screen itself is not dead. I'm not sure what the flex cable does, but from what I've read, the problem could stem from it if it has slightly come loose.
Have I reasoned correctly?

If so, I would like to get it repaired knowing that my PC is no longer under warranty. I don't mind sending it back to the after-sales service, but I don't want them to replace a panel for €600 when it might just be the flex cable that needs changing.

Hello Marco,

Try connecting your PC to another monitor. If the lines appear, it's a graphics card issue or a connection problem with the cables. Indeed, that can't be repaired and it's not cheap. If they don't appear on the other screen, then your panel is starting to fail. The lines always flicker at first and then stabilize. From February to now, I've gone from 1 to over 200 lines. I can't see anything anymore except a rainbow of colors!! I followed Jean's advice and bought a panel on eBay that arrived within a week. Price: 160 euros. Since I installed it over the weekend, I feel like I've got a new PC, and honestly, it's the best compromise, especially if your computer is of good quality.

I connected it to another screen, and there were no lines... which would mean that my panel is out. I don't want to believe that, actually... I'm still convinced that it's a connectivity issue between the screen and something downstream; otherwise, if I moved the screen, the lines would remain.

Hello everyone,  @lerevolteur83:  The warranty you’re talking about is the commercial warranty. It protects HP from a number of issues on a limited range of products. Specifically, only a subset of dv9000 and dv6000 (see the serial numbers) are concerned, and only if the failure is on their list (and dead pixel columns are not on their list).  In any case, the legal warranty, which protects the consumer, continues to be valid. You have 2 years from the discovery of the defect to take legal action to enforce it.  A++

Well, regarding your issue, I didn't quite understand it.  Are there "0"s and "lines" appearing on the startup screen that disappear afterwards? If this does not make the PC unfit for use, you cannot invoke the legal warranty.  However, if the screen is covered with columns of dead pixels, or if it goes black, or if the PC shuts down (due to overheating) by itself for example, the legal warranty is applicable.

Hi, I would say that my computer is in the process of being sent to HP's customer service, they will call me, because I actually managed to find a warranty that works. Since my computer has already been repaired, I have the right to request another repair within 90 days (or 3 months) if any unusual issue arises... As for the problem, it prevents me from activating the graphics card due to the blue screen. It prevents any installation of a fully operational OS, the installation gets stuck when reaching the desktop... I managed to install XP Pro after flashing the graphics card BIOS, which disabled it, and I was able to access the desktop, even though I had tried about 20 times... I tried Vista (it worked once when the graphics card decided to function normally, but upon my return...) Then the XP Media Center CDs from the HP site couldn't do anything (if after the installation the graphics card wanted to work, then after booting into Vista...) the installation lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes... So, customer service is supposed to call me, and I need to schedule an appointment for the collection of your machine.

Hi, just an update, HP is going to call me on Wednesday, February 7th, the day I don’t have class, so I can answer them whenever I want (they told me 11:30). I sent them an email confirming the call and thanking them (that’s completely normal ^^) and that’s it, I hope everything goes well, they need to connect me with a delivery person to set the delivery date, I will explain where I live (if they can’t find it, I’ll scalp them, especially since the first time, I had to send the laptop to my grandfather’s place, who lives near the main road, pffff!! what idiots!!) and then last time he called me once on my cell because he couldn’t find it, only the one call I received that day I had to miss :'(. So now I’m staying by my phone and I’ll ask him to call several times (he even got the wrong number the first time, and even the address, it’s like phones really came out of antiquity....) I managed to get them to do a repair for me, but I would have had to pay over €500 for the repair... I took a little detour my way and boom, on Monday they’re picking up the machine and it’s happening all over again for 2-3 weeks. My graphics card has been overclocked too much, and I can’t underclock it because I can't access the NVIDIA control panel. It shouldn’t have burned out; otherwise, I wouldn't be able to access Windows. Earlier, it started working like that when I booted it up, so I activated it, no problem, but it froze and I had to restart the computer, and the screen bugged out again. As for your case, I have no idea how you could handle it. Tell them that in that case, you’ll buy a computer from another brand or something along those lines, and bam, they’ll take you seriously. Don’t hesitate to bend the truth a little regarding your issue; once it's in repair, they’ll fix it for you... For me, they need to completely change the motherboard. The guy told me to back things up, but I don’t care at all...

Have you "physically" tested your screen??!!... in case you tested on an external screen and your video chipset is not to blame... you are looking for what could be mechanical or electronic interference affecting the proper functioning of the panel:  Try to hold your screen firmly and press for example on the top left corner (slight distortion of the panel), the same action on the right corner.... try several positions.  RESULT: do your lines disappear?  If so: let me know... solution.

Hi Laura, I acknowledge your message, which I believe relates to the issue we all have, namely that your screen is slowly dying. One line at first and 200 after 6 months! I read that your PC is a loan from the college for a year. Are you part of the Ille-et-Vilaine department and therefore of the ordi 35 operation? If so, I encourage you to get in touch with your ordi 35 coordinator or contact the ICT - IT service of the General Council. The reason I say this is that I am part of this institution. If it’s in another department, don’t hesitate to do the same approach. Your PC is under warranty.

So, where do we stand on recourse with HP? But as was mentioned earlier, for my part, the zd 8000 series with the noisy fan and pixels or worse that jump after two years has really put me off HP.

Good evening,  I may have found a second-hand HP laptop, it's a zd 8020 EA (for 250€) and I'm wondering if the screen is compatible with my zd 8369 EA. This 8020 device has a dead motherboard. In your opinion, is the problem definitely with the screen or could it be the graphics card (integrated on the motherboard in this laptop)? Hi, it depends if the issue comes from the screen by connecting an external monitor to the VGA port, or from the motherboard. But are you sure it's a hardware problem (motherboard, graphics card, etc.)? If it’s the screen, you can use it, but how do you plan to go about it—connect your ZD 8020 EA to it, or take the one from the ZD 8369 EA and put it on your ZD 8020 EA??

Regarding updates on my case: I have forwarded all the documents to a law firm. The wheels are in motion. It's going to take the usual time (several months), but according to the firm, it will result in a reimbursement. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and continuing to send them the list of people who are willing to contact me to testify about their issues.  The longer the list, the quicker and easier the plea will be. And the sooner my case is judged, the sooner you'll be able to use this case law to your advantage. Hi, still be careful because the purchase is time-limited (I'm talking about the screen ^^). As for the display, I agree with what exispam said; a screen displaying lines has two reasons for not working: either it's the GPU that's having a display issue (that was my case due to an overclock of the GPU) or it's the motherboard itself with one or more integrated circuits connected to the faulty screen, or it's the screen. In this case, there are two alternatives: try an external monitor or test a special software for dead pixels: http://www.infos-du-net.com/telecharger/UDPixel,0301-3214.html. In this case, buying a new screen will solve the problem... Otherwise, the motherboard needs to be replaced (that's what they did for me), along with the keyboard at the same time...

I installed a pixel tester and the only color where I don't see my pink line is white; otherwise, I see the line in all the test colors. How should I interpret the results? Hi, it's normal that you don't see your pink line in the white (a bit of physics) since it lets all light through and contains all the colors of the spectrum (like a rainbow). Try to fix your line by waking up your dead pixels (if that's the case, you'll need to let the software run for a long time...). If that doesn't work, it's probably an internal hardware issue. But the best way to pinpoint the problem is to connect an external monitor (not a laptop screen but a desktop one); we'll know for sure. If the line appears on the external screen, it's hardware; otherwise, it's the screen...   Try if you have a monitor and let us know the result.

If the result is the same on both the laptop screen and the external screen, there's no doubt, it's the graphics card that is failing... So replacement of the motherboard... Send an email to HP telling them that your computer has a problem and it won't start... Tell them it's related to the screen and they will call you back for an appointment to pick up the beast... My graphics card failed (I had overclocked the GPU ^^) and HP, after a few well-placed emails, agreed to take it back... (you have to send the heat from the start but keep some arguments...) I told them that I absolutely needed this computer (which is true since I'm always on it...^^) and that I couldn't have it repaired by a technician because it was quite far from home... (which is also true for me...) Then I told them that if I couldn't have it repaired, I would switch to a brand that is, let's say, a bit more interesting (like Packard Bell or something...) they didn't say anything, but after I told them I had it repaired a little while ago (less than 90 days) I could declare any other repairs within the 3-month window... But I think it was when I told them that my computer wouldn't start anymore (that's actually what was noted on the return sheet provided with the PC...) -- Too funny: Keyboard not detected!!! Last night, while I was playing a video game on a paid (and thus secure, in principle!) website, my screen was covered with a blue and black mesh veil...!? ... I could see through it, but my pointer had turned into a square that left traces when I moved it. Catastrophe! I'm going to a forum like this one (struggling to see!) and I'm following some advice: uninstalling the graphics card, etc. I go to my control panel, click on network configuration assistant instead of add/remove (I can't see much!) and then the screen mostly goes back to normal....? ...? ... meaning I can see that my desktop is still contaminated, but I can see normally on this web page and I can finally type without messing up! But! My pointer is still a 1cm x 1cm square with "small blue lines, white space, 5 small blue lines, white space, and small blue lines," it repeats 4 times below... I don't understand anything... HELP!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone,  I'm posting here because I have the same issue. My laptop fell off my bed last weekend, it slid onto my PC tablet. I think it fell on the corner of the screen (where all the cables apparently go)  I bought my PC last May, and it already had a stay at HP in October. I left it on my bed, it overheated, and the motherboard and battery died. (That's why I invested in a tablet.) They did replace all that for me.  So since that fall last weekend, there has been a red vertical line about 6-7cm from the left side.  But when I tilt the screen, the line disappears but comes back as soon as I let go of the screen.  Can I send it back to HP? Is my screen about to die??  Thanks in advance.

Afterwards, I can acknowledge that the method they communicated to you comes from a database they consult regarding the encountered problem... Anyway, it's all sorted what they told you, they must stick to very strict methods and must not exceed this limit in any case... Everyone knows how to do that, the interest of a customer service is to reach someone competent who can help you and offer solutions based on their personal experience... Unfortunately, this type of professional only exists if you go see your local dealer and pay for the diagnosis... That's how it is, everything can be bought in life... So here’s the thing, I had the same problem as you (a green line on the right side). I called HP and they told me it would cost 400 euros to repair because I was no longer under warranty. Since I couldn't afford to pay such a sum for a repair, I looked for help online, but as I couldn't find anything, I got frustrated and gave a little tap on the line (I have a flat screen) and the green line disappeared!!!!!!!! So, I advise you not to take a baseball bat and go to town on your screen, but I'm just saying there are more than one way to avoid paying ^^ Good luck to everyone.

For those who still have a PC with this kind of problem, here are a few tests: - connect a second screen, if you do not see these lines on it, it is likely due to your screen or its connectivity with the motherboard or the graphics card. - if you wish, you can start your computer in safe mode and in that case check if you still see these lines, if yes, it is indeed a problem as mentioned above, otherwise it is coming from your graphics card or motherboard.  I also have a problem with my computer that shows green stripes at startup and then nothing, the PC becomes unresponsive, I can only start it in safe mode, so I concluded that this is a hardware issue. I have exactly the same problem as you on my Compaq PC. It’s a screen issue because if you adjust it a bit, you’ll notice that these lines disappear or change color. I think it’s at the level of the connections that link the screen to the hard drive. A++

A green vertical line appears on my Dell Studio 15! A second one intermittently appears in red 5mm from the first! What’s strange is that depending on the tilt of my screen, the lines disappear, so I tend to think it’s more of a connection issue with the wires rather than a problem with the display! If a solution has been found since then, I’m interested!!   P.S. On a projector, the line doesn’t appear, so it’s not the graphic card!!

I have a trick for color lines and dead (colored) pixels  (ps: only do this as a last resort, because if done poorly, it can simply destroy your screen)  Press on the base of your screen where the line appears (make sure to press hard enough, but without cracking your screen ^^)  Then restart your computer while continuing to press the base of the screen. In principle, this "brutally reactivates" the dead area.  It works the same way for dead pixels.  Hoping to have helped some of you!

Hello, I hope I can help you with the pink screen or the one that is stretched in two colors, because I had the same problem as you, but mine is with a laptop. First go to the desktop and right-click in the middle of  the screen, a small window will pop up and then click on SCREEN  RESOLUTION, after that in the new window click on ADVANCED SETTINGS which is located in the middle in blue, and then by clicking in the new window on TROUBLESHOOTING then on the MODIFY SETTINGS button to fix your computer's display issues, and there you go, the problem is solved. PS: for computers with a tower, it could be the cable that is connected behind the tower or behind the screen that has moved; just give it a little shake where it connects with your hand.
