Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. Office 2007 seems to restrict sending emails to its own Outlook software.
I'm using a temporary idea (I hope!) to print to a PDF Printer (PDFCreator or Adobe PDF) and then from Acrobat Reader (or another PDF Reader) click on the Mail icon... Well! It's just a bit more convenient... Still, it's not great!!
But I would really like to know if someone knows the solution....

Question to JPP29: Are you looking to send via Outlook or Thunderbird?? (no Outlook Express under Vista)
If it's via Outlook, just install it and everything's fine.
If it's WITHOUT installing Outlook (or after uninstalling it), you need the following in the Registry:
With both additions in the Registry, it works for Vista and/or XP.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem]
"InstallCmd"="rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf"
"MAPI"="1"
"CMCDLLNAME32"="mapi32.dll"
"CMC"="1"
"MAPIX"="1"
"MAPIXVER"="1.0.0.1"
"OLEMessaging"="1"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\MSMapiApps]

"ocpCalendarCn.dll"="Microsoft Outlook"
"ocpContactsCn.dll"="Microsoft Outlook"
"KEM.EXE"="Microsoft Outlook"
"SearchProtocolHost.exe"="Microsoft Outlook"
This is enough to "activate" the Send options in Word
Additionally, these keys are needed for Thunderbird:

Hello
first of all, thank you very much for the time spent helping others.
This is what makes the strength of a network.
Here I copied/pasted the entire text into a .reg file
I clicked on it and noticed that the rules had indeed been changed.
However, when I do the mailing, nothing happens and Thunderbird does not send any message.
I specify that I have
XP
Word 2007
Thunderbird 2.0.0.21
I have installed several email accounts in Thunderbird
perhaps the problem comes from that?
Thank you very much in advance for any help or experience in this regard

Hello,
I believe that XP and Vista don't differ much; what matters is the MAPI Mail that Outlook installs ... and removes upon uninstallation!
At my place, the export of my key is: (since I installed Outlook for iPhone.. then removed it because I'm syncing with Google!! another topic....)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem]
"InstallCmd"="rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf"
"MAPI"="1"
"CMCDLLNAME32"="mapi32.dll"
"CMC"="1"
"MAPIX"="1"
"MAPIXVER"="1.0.0.1"
"OLEMessaging"="1"
"OLDInstallCmd"="rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\MSMapiApps]
"choosusr.dll"=""
"inetsw95.exe"=""
"outstore.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"SearchProtocolHost.exe"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"msab32.dll"=""
"nwab32.dll"=""
"KEMMAPI.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"KEM.EXE"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"ocpContactsCn.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"ocpCalendarCn.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"ocpNotesCn.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"ocpTasksCn.dll"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
"iTunes.exe"="Mozilla Thunderbird"
As you can see, there is an additional key in the first section, and I have a secondary key regarding the MAPI client with Thunderbird as the default app.
Try this; I think it should work.
PS: For others => the extraction from the above Regedit seems simpler and better than the very long one from my first article. Finally, this is what is currently running on my machine after doing the process again. -
...continuation... (read not really a difference and not by really!!!)
I don't think the key "OLDInstallCmd" is crucial as its name OLD suggests, but you never know!
For me, what's important is the MAPI client that should be the subsection.
No, don't worry, the number of accounts doesn't matter in this matter, I also had many, it's not a concern.

Hello TITI,
Look at my intervention n° 6 where you copy/paste text from Windows Registry ...etc until the end in Notepad, you save the file as EMAIL.reg for example (the .reg extension is very important!!).
Then you launch Word 2007, the options should be available...
If you are using Windows Mail... that should be enough.
If you are using Mozilla Thunderbird, and if it doesn't work with it (it doesn't call Thunderbird by default), which is not certain!! then you add in the same way the additional text found in my intervention n° 4.
Thank you for keeping me updated on the result. -
Hello,
Well, I see that you have some issues!! I can say that I use this option to print on PDFCreator a lot, then send the email via Acrobat Reader, especially for music sheets, scanned documents... etc.
For Office, it is still better if the intended functions work normally. I'm not an "expert," and I made my discoveries through successive trial and error. I suggest you do the same manipulations I did the day I "discovered" the solution.
Step 1) Install Outlook and obtain a "normal" functioning of Office 2007. That is to say, the Send options active and the automatic launch of Outlook when we do "Email" or "Send as attachment...."
Step 2) Run Regedit, collapse all branches (there should be 5 left). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, and finally Windows Messaging Subsystem.
Having this key selected (1 mouse click), you go to File, Export, and you export this key into a file called, for example, WinMesg.reg. The .reg extension is automatic and very important!
Step 3) This is "the highlight" of my solution! Because now you will uninstall Outlook, and this Windows Messaging Subsystem key will be, if not deleted, at least "destroyed"… and the Office options will no longer work again.
Step 4) I recommend very strongly to use CCleaner which you can download from http://www.ccleaner.com/ (I use it all the time and have no other tweaking utility... my PC never shuts down again!). This uninstalls the software that you think you have uninstalled through Add/Remove programs thoroughly. This is the real flaw of Windows, but CCleaner does a great job of fixing that. For safety, you also restart the machine (this resets the cache memory)
Step 5) After restarting, no Office software open, go to the explorer to find the WinMesg.reg file and double-click on it. It will "install" itself in Regedit... and there, in principle, if you launch Word you will find the "Send" Options active again.
I hope it works for you because otherwise, I am no longer competent!! I really don't see what could be blocking. The CCleaner step seems important to me. I have often noticed this with other uninstall/install processes; there remain keys, preferences that prevent a new installation from functioning properly.
So I systematically use this cleaner after uninstalling a software or before installing a new one.
Good luck, keep me posted! -
Hello,
I'd also like to know how to send faxes from Word. My fax console doesn't allow me to send documents...... with Word when I had Office 2000 yes...
Do you know how to do it? -
Hello,
Yes! That's exactly what I'm doing because Acrobat can send an email!!!
Or we save and use the paperclip to attach the file, but it's not very "classy".
On a test PC, just to see, I installed Outlook, and then the option to send an email directly from Word
is activated... By going into the settings, we see that a MAPI "set" has been installed.
However, Acrobat sends emails without MAPI, so it must be possible... but MSoft hasn't changed, they don't like
competition....
If anyone knows how to bypass this restriction or activate the option... We'll be very grateful! -

Thank you for your very complete response, which is too complex for me as a modest user of computing.
But I forgot to give some details. I am using Vista, Windows Mail, and Internet Explorer. Now that it is more focused, thank you for replying to me. -
OK it's almost the same case as mine. I don't know Windows Mail but it's like Outlook Express.
In my opinion, you just need the following registry keys: (I've put them in Italics)
Copy/Paste this text into a file you call <Messaging.reg>
Double-click on the file after saving it (anywhere)
These keys will automatically enter the "Regedit"
In principle, that's it !!!!
Close Word, reopen ... it should work.

This message is to report that I just applied the recipe from Elandormeur (post 5 from December 2007) and it works wonderfully!
The "Email" option in the "Send" menu is enabled again and directly opens the Thunderbird message with the .doc file attached.
Thank you!!!

For JPP29:
Just to know if your problem is resolved correctly with my solution.
Thank you for a response. -
I see in the text "Outlook Express" wouldn't it be better to put "Windows Mail" for Wista?
I am also just a modest user.
Thank you. -
Sure! Of course... see the beginning of the message...
But if we don't install Outlook, the registry keys don’t exist by default...
However, I personally hate Outlook; I prefer Windows Mail or Outlook Express (XP)
Since these are two programs that we don’t install, we need to create the keys another way.
I use Thunderbird, which is ten times better (anti-spam, multiple accounts, folder hierarchy, and addresses)
and it's the same problem... we have to create the keys with my little file
A simple double-click does the work...
Or we can install Outlook and not use it!! Not a great solution!!!
I would like to know if I helped to solve the "schmilblick" and if JPP29 is working as he wishes....
That's all... Best regards to everyone. -
Hello everyone,
I just bought a laptop with Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 installed.
However, with Word 2007, it's impossible to send Word documents as email attachments; the button for this function is present in the toolbar but is grayed out and cannot be used. What should I do?
Does anyone have the same problem or can help me? -
Dear Sleepy Elan
Before proceeding with the operation you described, I would like to point out that I am using Orange Mail and not Windows Mail, and I am on Windows Vista. Can I still carry out the operation without any damage?
Thank you for your help.
Titi -
Orange Mail = internet connection ... and we find ourselves on the Orange website????
If that's the case, there is no solution to your problem,
You need a MAIL client on your computer: Windows Mail, Thunderbird, or Outlook (heavy and not convenient!)
If you are using the Internet browser to connect to Orange... then it's an attachment to download... but Office 2007 can't do anything directly....
Finally, I don't know of any possible solution for this scenario.-
Hello,
It's not just with Word 2007; it seems to have existed since Windows 2003.
However, I have Windows 2003 and Outlook Express. It is possible to send to the recipient, but the document is in the message. It is not possible to send as an attachment. And yet, Outlook Express is indeed from Microsoft.
Outlook Express seems to no longer be sufficient.
http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich 2171898 send as an attachment in Word
--
JM- Hello,
to my knowledge, Windows 2003 is a Server OS! You might mean Office 2003.
NO! With Office 2003 and XP when you set your default Email Client, the icon "Message recipient..." launches the email if it’s not already running and generates a new message with the Word file attached.
This feature "stopped working" when moving to Office 2007.
My method is simple, I discovered what the installation of Outlook (not ... Express) added to the Regedit. I extracted it, then I removed Outlook which I don’t want to use (heavy, not user-friendly... I don’t like it!) and then I re-integrated what Outlook had removed upon uninstalling... and here we go, Thunderbird is linked to the MAPI system used for sending emails. You should be able to replace "Thunderbird" with the words "Outlook Express" in your case.
But honestly use Thunderbird: no more Spam, exactly the same interface, super easy account setup... really just a joy. And super nice add-ons too.
Ciao

With some delay, I would like to warmly thank you for the guidance you provided, as it works very well indeed.
I notice that the forum is lively and there is quite a bit of interesting information; in fact, I am working on Windows 7 Ultimate and I have Office 2007 Professional. It is true that I had to go through point by point what you said, but I now have a machine that works like a charm, thanks to you. (Thank you elandormeur!)
Best regards.

Hello,
These modifications to be made to the registry also apply to Excel and may also apply to PowerPoint, but I haven't verified it.
However, to send an image from Office Picture Manager, it is necessary to have Outlook installed.

JM-
Hello,
Yes, quite plausible, but here I find that the Attachment procedure is suitable. Whereas a formatted message in Word or Excel sent directly... is more "classy" and simple. Especially since we can combine the transformation to PDF AND the sending.
Also, I like that the basic options of Office 2007 can be used with other email services than Outlook, unless you are 100% tied to Microsoft. 30 to 40% of the planet uses Mozilla! An achievement... a proof of quality.
Especially since the Mozilla suite is undoubtedly quite remarkable and frankly "better" than the whole IE and Outlook. But it's primarily a matter of taste in addition to security (which has been significantly improved by Microsoft, it must be said, though with a 10-year delay!).
It's great if I could help some people.

Working in an administration, we had Outlook uninstalled in favor of Thunderbird-Icasso to save on servers... I won't write what these savings are for, you can probably guess.
Personally, it's like a flat key that costs 50 cents and the same one that costs 3 euros.
With Outlook, I could see everything in the menu column. Not only the mailbox but also the calendar of all the people in my department and all my contacts. With Thunderbird, you have to click on an icon to access the calendars of others and type the first letters of their name, and for contacts, you also have to click on an icon.
With Outlook, if you emptied the trash, you could still recover those deleted items, which is not the case with Thunderbird.
With Outlook, if you accidentally deleted a contact folder, you could recover it, which is not the case with Thunderbird unless you have backed up.
With Outlook, you could share contacts, which is not the case with Thunderbird.
And there are others...

Installation and usage instructions for CCleaner
At one point, a screen will appear with lots of checkboxes; you only leave checked:
Add "Open CCleaner..." to the recycle bin context menu and
Automatically check for CCleaner updates
Afterward, every time it tells you that a new version is available... you download and install it, being careful with the options above.
What we are interested in is the Registry chapter (large icon on the left) button "Scan for Issues" You repair...and answer yes everywhere except to the registry backup (not necessary).
For fine-tuning CCleaner settings you can ask, it's another folder!!!-
OK
thank you so much for your help
I will try all this calmly
and I will keep everyone updated
it will be my very modest contribution to the advancement of knowledge ;-)
see you very soon
and a big thank you again.
I knew ccleaner and I also use it after uninstallation
but I hadn't thought of doing it for this specific case.
kind regards
:)- Hello!
Yes, it's not that simple... Occasionally, I also have "breaks" in my link to Thunderbird. I've always managed to fix it in the following way.
1) I accept that Windows Mail or Express is the default mail client,
I check that it works with...,
2) I re-import the important Regedit keys (below is the file I use) (barely different from my other responses). I'm not even sure if "Thunderbird" should be capitalized!!! In any case, it doesn't hurt if it doesn't help!
3) I reinstall Thunderbird, I check from the start that it will be my default client... and generally, it works again!!
But it's really not scientific because I don't know where or why it messes up... when it messes up...
I have nonetheless understood that Outlook uses advanced MAPI dlls (in the Control Panel, there's a Mail icon with which you manage users/profiles) while Windows Mail or Express as well as Thunderbird only use basic MAPI. So, it is necessary to uninstall advanced MAPI if it is installed because it's the one that takes priority.
Once I had to do a thorough cleanup with CCleaner as mentioned in a previous response, but generally, I manage well. The test to say it works is to send an email from Adobe Reader. Because it always works with a right-click on a file in Explorer, it also works from Word... but it may not function from Adobe Reader... but so far, I have always come out victorious from my "battle" with Windows!! Thunderbird is "too" good, I would be annoyed to leave it, but I don't think that will happen. See Thunderbird 3.0 beta, still improving...

Hello,
My issue is different, since Office 2007:
Under W7, Office cannot remember the use of Windows Live Mail. No matter how many times I confirm the default software, every time I reopen/start it, I get the same error message: please connect to Exchange to use the address book (I'm quoting from memory).
However,
If I launch an email from Acrobat, without doing anything else, I can send a file via email from Office 2007 using the dedicated icon!
If any of you have an idea?
Thank you in advance.-
Hello Who, What, What!!!
I don't particularly know Windows 7 but since it’s an improved version of Vista, I think it could be this story of simple or extended MAPI... (hmm!)
If it’s the extended version, you’re tied to Microsoft products... (well, I’m somewhat affirming that)
Thunderbird assumes we get rid of everything related to Microsoft mail (probably including Exchange)
It's a matter of choice!! From there, I’m not competent.
I made the choice: no Outlook (express, mail or otherwise), no Exchange, no extended MAPI
Thunderbird with IMAP on my Gmail account
And actually... I only use Firefox and my Gmail account now... so: iPhone, laptop, internet café, hotels... everywhere in the world I have MY contacts, MY calendar, my memos (on Toodledo), my important files (rare) on Google Docs.... And I’m no longer at risk of losing anything!!!
Revolution... but ultimately I’m VERY happy. But this is another debate and another topic...
