Using Epson scanner with empty cartridges

Hello,
I have an Epson SX410 all-in-one printer. The cartridges are empty (waiting to be replaced with new ones). I need to scan documents. Observation: The printer won't go into normal mode for using the scanner until the cartridges have been changed.
Scanning cannot start as long as the printer is not ready. Etc....
What a scam from Epson!
Does anyone have an idea on how to unlock the printer for scanner use?

Thank you both. Your advice allowed me to operate the scanner without changing the empty cartridges. Indeed:
1- you just need to simulate the cartridge change. However, since this operation is directly controlled by the printer (it has its own dialog screen), you must ensure that the printer is not in an error status.
2- use scanning software that controls the printer.
