Hello,
I am a beginner in using Linux. However, I have some experience with Windows.
I have a machine running Linux and another one running Windows.
Last week, I installed the update of OpenOffice 2.0.1 on the Linux machine. It went well.
After that, I wanted to install Java Jre 1.5.0_06 from Sun. I followed the instructions provided on the Sun Microsystems website. They are identical to those found on the commentcamarche.net site under the section "install Java Jre plugin from Sun."
Everything went well until "Accept the terms of Sun Microsystems' license. Response: yes."
After that, the machine restarted (I don't know why or how), and that's when things went wrong.
Since then, the machine is not responding correctly. When it starts up, it stops and displays the following message:
"Fedora Core Release 3 (Heidelberg)
Kernel 2.6.11-1.35_FC3 on an i686
Init: id 'X' Respawning too fast: Disabled for 5 minutes"
If I press ENTER, I get
"localhost login:"
If I log in (whether as a user or as root), I always get:
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: [: =: unary operator expected
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: dircolor: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash:
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: [: =: unary operator expected
-bash: [: too many arguments
Init: id 'X' Respawning too fast: Disabled for 5 minutes

What happened? And, most importantly, how can I fix this?
Thank you in advance.

Good evening,
Here are some links,
http://www.google.com/linux?hl=fr&q=Init+%3A+id+%22X%22+Respawning+too+fast%3A+Disabled+for+5+minutes+&btnG=Rechercher&lr=lang_fr
And a piece of advice,
very often, when you get an error message, type it exactly as it is into google-linux,
(be careful with typos or others, in your case 'Dissabled' with 2 s gives a link that is not related to your problem because of this mistake)
Have a good evening.

There are too many error messages at startup, so I decided to upgrade to Fedora Core 4.
As I was preparing to make this upgrade, I read the RELEASE-NOTES file found on the first installation disk of Fedora Core 4.
In the section: Package-Specific Notes; I found a paragraph regarding Java.
"Java Package Recommendations
Fedora Core 4 users are advised not to use the Java RPM provided by Sun. It contains Provides that conflict with names used in packages provided as part of Fedora Core 4. Because of this, Sun Java might disappear from an installed system during package upgrade operations.
Fedora Core 4 users should use either the RPM from jpackage.org or manually install the Sun Java tarball into /opt. Sun Java 1.5+ is recommended for stability purposes."
I therefore suspect that the Java RPMs provided by Sun have affected Fedora Core 3 in the same way they affect Fedora Core 4.
That could be the source of my problems. We will see...
In any case, I am proceeding with the upgrade to Fedora Core 4.

Hello
for Fedora 3 you install Java as follows:
http://dag.wieers.com/packages/j2re/
you can configure your yum as follows:
http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/FAQ.php#B
then you use yum for your Java installation simply .....
otherwise see here:
http://fedorafaq.free.fr/fc3/custom_java.html
the conflict problem is known only for Fedora 4 the DAG rpm poses no problem for 3

Hello,
this total will help you http://comment-astuces.blogspot.com/2009/12/firefox-plugin-java-jre-de-sun.html

I'll see what it says and I'll come back with comments.
The problem is more serious than I thought. If I try to open in console mode, I get a series of "Failed" commands that do not start.
I will restart the machine in interactive mode and check which commands do not start.
Talk to you later...
