Nikon D3100 battery issue

Hello,

I just purchased the Nikon D3100, but when I insert the battery, the following message appears: "Incompatible battery. Please choose a battery intended for use in this device." I've double-checked that it is the correct battery and I've charged it. What should I do?
Thank you.
Configuration: Windows Vista / Safari 534.10

You absolutely need to make a claim right away; many cameras now have a blocking mechanism in the form of a small program in their FIRMWARE regarding generic batteries, (logically in your case there shouldn't be a problem since it seems to be original, but who knows) to ensure that we can only use their much more expensive batteries. There is a way to bypass this, but in your case, it's better to check with your supplier to resolve this issue.

I just bought a generic battery EN-EL14 for my D3100 that indeed doesn’t work. The original one works, but for a second battery between 8 and 80€, I had made a choice!! You mentioned a way to workaround the issue. Do you know it? Thank you.

Yes, read higher, I respond to it
you put original in grip, then we put off, add the false one next to it, do on then off, remove original and put false in its place and it's ok for the doubled download time and when empty, load them and repeat this operation

write grip d 3100 in Google

To respond quickly, your devices are under warranty, there's no need to do anything foolish, go to your supplier so they can resolve this issue.

Keep us updated, good luck @+

Attention, some Nikon reflex cameras do not work with non-Nikon batteries even if they are exactly identical to the original battery but do not have the Nikon "chip."
Nikon wants to sell its gear.....

but just buy a grip for about 50 euros and all non-Nikon batteries will work on the D3100 or D5100
a worthwhile investment because non-Nikon batteries cost 15 euros instead of 60 euros
plus your camera will run longer as 2 batteries can be used in parallel in the grip, you just need one original battery for memory setup in the camera just once and then you won't need it until the next battery change

type "D3100 grip" in Google

I had the same problem with the original battery. Two days after receiving it (online purchase), I took it to the NIKON after-sales service for a standard exchange. They refused. They kept it for 2 months for repairs (I’ll skip the details, had to take it back twice...). Bug with some 3100s. Now everything is perfect. Caroline-

On the internet, you have a warranty, so get in touch with the supplier who will provide you with the procedure to follow. Take your invoice to have all the information.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem as you with my Nikon D3100 that I received this Wednesday. The same error message appears when I insert the battery (which is indeed original)... Have you found out what the problem is? Battery, device?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my D3100 that I received this Wednesday, receiving the same error message with what seems to be the original battery. Have you found out what was causing this? Battery? Camera body?

Thank you in advance.
Best regards.

As far as I'm concerned, I bought my case online, I'm a bit worried about their late response... or how they're going to handle it remotely...

What is the way to get around it? Is it easy to do?

Thank you in advance.

See the supplier who:

- apparently did not provide you with the original batteries but with cheaper "fake" ones (for them) without checking.

- If the battery was in the original sealed package, Nikon "screwed up" by not updating the firmware before selling. The latest firmware for this device is 1.3 from December.

They replied to me...

'As for the battery, we never open the Nikon box containing the camera except to check for the warranty card.
No one touches, removes or adds anything in the box.

The battery is the one supplied by Nikon and placed in the box by Nikon Corporation.
A battery error would be solely the initiative (error) of the Nikon Corporation's quality control service.

We remain at your disposal and wish you a very good end of
the day'

In short, I'm in trouble... Where can I find the firmware and how do I update it on my device?

Thank you in advance..

Well then, "it's fend for yourselves and we are" what online store is that, we'll advertise for them, so they have to ensure either by exchange or refund and not hide behind Nikon, that's too easy.

Otherwise, you need to contact Nikon France to find out how we can solve this problem, logically they should help you, they don't like bad publicity.
Go check their site, click on "service & support" and go to the section that interests you.

That's it, that's it...

I just contacted Nikon France, they've never heard or seen this problem before... They tell me that nothing can be done online (like a firmware update), I have to send the body and battery (at my expense...) for a repair (and not an exchange...)...

I live in Madrid, they have a service and repair office here, I'm going there this afternoon with everything... Let's see what they do with it! I'm crossing my fingers...

It's crazy, you spend over 1000€ on a body + lenses and it's on you to sort it out...

€1000 for a D3100 even with a lens, the lens must be high-end or you got ripped off.

For my part, it was indeed the device itself that had a problem and not the battery, so I went back to where I had bought it and they replaced it without any fuss.
I advise you to do the same if you bought it in a large store like Fnac or something similar.
As for the rest, I have no idea what it could be... Sorry

Thank you for your responses :)

Yep, on my side I’m taking it to the Nikon service center in Madrid on Monday. I tested the battery today in another body and it works perfectly. So probably like you, it's an issue with the D3100. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll exchange it just like for you. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

It's quite possible that it's the same issue, a
malfunction of the camera then... It's true that it's very annoying, I was lucky to find a solution very quickly but I think they should normally give you a new one.
Best of luck to you and take care!

Good evening,

For everyone's information, the official battery for the Nikon D3100 is this one.

If you do have this battery, the problem lies elsewhere. Otherwise, if you were sold an illicit battery, return everything to the seller for a refund and kick them in the rear!!!

Good night.

I use illegal ones without any problem in my D5100 with a grip and 2 copy batteries inside, and I’m thrilled with it.

Don't forget that your equipment is guaranteed; there's no question that the repairs should be at your expense. You need to make them feel at Nikon that the customer is king; don't fall into their trap, raise your voice kindly but firmly.

One thing, on which purchasing site did you buy your device? Logically, if there's a problem with a purchase, it should be return with exchange or refund, no matter what they say; they must respect the terms.

Yep, you’re probably right, but I don’t want to fight and spend a week changing emails about who should do what, especially since the shipping costs for Collissimo will be on me... For your information, http://www.e-shop-photo.eu/. I just dropped off my camera at Nikon, waiting three weeks (they have no cameras, just customer service). That makes you want to buy everything from FNAC...

Keep us posted, because if other people have this kind of problem it might help them

If your battery is rated less than 1030 mAh.
Then, it will be incompatible with the D3100.
It will only be usable in a Nikon P7000...
Sorry for you.
Good luck.

I also have the same problem as LuceP, I've had my device for almost a year now but I've never used it precisely because of this issue. I don't really know how to return it to the supplier because this device was a gift from very good friends who bought it online, namely on Amazon. Does anyone know what I should do, as I don't have a receipt?
The funny thing is that I went to different camera shops for help in resolving this problem, but it was one of those cases of "it's not fair that you received this gift, so now you're on your own...".
Thank you for your help... Merry Christmas, by the way :-)

testing nikon battery and copy and in my opinion there's no chip in the battery
however on the middle pin we have a difference of 2 volts between the two
and on the other pins it's identical 8.4 volts and 7.8 volts and the original middle pin is 7.2v and the copy is 5v so that's what triggers the copy and not a chip in each battery
and so with the grip and copy there is no risk because the voltage is identical or lower
