Hello!
I have a mini HiFi MP3 system equipped with a USB port that allows me to play MP3 files stored on a USB key.
I also have a 10GB external USB hard drive (a USB enclosure housing a standard 3.5" IDE disk).
I would like to know if it's possible to use my USB hard drive like a USB key so that I can play my MP3 files on the mini system?
I should specify that I have already tried this but it didn't work, what should I do?
Thank you.

First of all, thank you for the response.
As for the other topics, they are not related to my question:
in the other topics, it is about an interface between a standard hi-fi system with RCA input (analog) and a USB drive (digital)
However, in my case, I have an MP3 hi-fi system with a USB port (so I can connect any USB key)
I also have a hard drive with a USB port
So theoretically, I should be able to connect my USB hard drive to the USB port of my hi-fi system.
However, after trying it, it does not work!!
So my question is why?
Are there any settings or options to modify (for example, switching to FAT32, NTFS, etc.)?
Does anyone have such a system at home (USB hard drive on MP3 hi-fi system)?
Thank you

I think it's true that it's more likely to work in FAT32.
What is the brand/model of the device?

In my opinion, there’s no chance it will work via USB!!! Making a connection between a PC and a hi-fi system won’t function if it’s not designed for it by the manufacturers. In my case, it’s just about syncing between the hi-fi system and the USB hard drive, not between the system and the PC (big difference). As for the answer to your question, I still don’t have a solution (haven’t had time to look into it).
Another solution for you, use your PC's audio output to connect to the system. However, you will need to manage everything on your PC (choosing the song, the album, playlist,...) and not on your system; it will simply serve as an amplifier.

hello
it is quite possible to use an external hard drive as a USB stick on various devices
I have a 400GB external HDD and a DivX player with USB port,
it is perfectly recognized, all the movies are listed
first of all, you need to connect the HDD to the DivX player and turn it on before turning on the DivX player, then the DivX player lists all the files on the hard drive (music, photos, and DivX)
now the real problem is that the hard drive must absolutely be in FAT 32 and not NTFS
so when you buy your external hard drives: avoid formatting them in NTFS
leave them as they are!
because if you want to format them back to FAT32 later, and if your hard drive exceeds 128GB, then Windows will refuse to format it, you will need special software to format it at higher capacity
now another problem is the file system managed by FAT32, that is to say short names 8.3 so if you have movies like "once upon a time..." you'll see listed (on the screen) something like 1:iletai^1
it's not easy with that to know which movie you want to watch
so you will have to be quite methodical to organize and catalog your DivX or any other files
hoping to have clarified this for you

I have also done some research, having the same type of problem, and sadly this reasoning that seems logical is actually totally utopian... Because a USB stick and an external hard drive do not work in the same way. Your mini chain is set up for USB sticks but not for external hard drives; you can try any USB stick, it will work, but external hard drives do not count...
My mini chain is a JVC UX-G60, and it is not only equipped with a USB port but also an RGB port to connect it to a TV.
I therefore bought a multimedia hard drive, which, when connected to my mini chain, which is also connected to the TV, should allow me to read all kinds of files this way.
Unfortunately, I find myself in a technical problem that has not yet been fully resolved. I cannot make a proper connection, but however, the manufacturers and other sellers of these two devices say this operation is possible.

Mini MP3 chain Hyundai (comes with USB key FM).
Bought for €99 at Intermarché during the holiday season.
For the model, I need to check the details on the chain.
I wonder if I should partition my hard drive (10GB) into 2 or 3 parts to increase the chances of it working, what do you think?

Normally no problem, but it depends on your external hard drive. You say you've tried it before, did you connect it to your hi-fi system? How? (USB-USB cable?) And had you turned it on beforehand?
Hello
Do you have any new information because I have a hi-fi system with a USB input that works very well. I was thinking of getting a 500GB external hard drive and connecting it to the system to listen to the MP3s from the hard drive, but it seems that it doesn't work, so I'm hesitant to invest.
What about formatting it in FAT32? Has anyone tried it?
Thanks for your answers and see you soon

Hello, I have an 80GB HDD formatted in FAT32 (only a 20GB partition, because XP doesn’t allow more, at least I haven't tried)
It works perfectly on a 3.5" external HDD
Note: to partition:
right-click on "My Computer" => "Manage" then "Disk Management" choose the HDD in question then create a partition of less than 20GB, then format it in FAT32
I did the same thing for a 2.5" external HDD, it works but that said, a simple enclosure is not enough, it also requires external power, for my part, I invested in the Pix Pocket enclosure from Advance, which has a battery (for memory card transfers) at €32 at Gros Débill (humor...)

Hello,
I just bought a small Hi-Fi system with an integrated USB port... so it should be able to read a USB stick, but to my great dismay... I followed the instructions and tried to connect my MP3 player with its USB port and... nothing... the system checks and tells me there are no files, and yet... I can assure you there are!
Is there also some kind of compatibility issues with formatting and other stuff like that with a simple MP3 player? I don't know if I should buy a simple USB stick before shouting scandal or take my brand new system back to the store right away...
Thanks for your insights.

Hello,
I tested various Hi-Fi systems over the weekend in stores to see which one could read the MP3 files I have on a 2.5" external hard drive (Western Digital Passport II, 250 GB). It's an external drive that doesn't need an electrical power supply, as it is powered through the USB connection. Only two Sony models were able to do this: CMT-BX3 and CMT-HX3.
The only problem is that the display on these systems is quite small, and there is no way to browse the folder structure of the drive to choose the correct folder. So it's not really practical. Has anyone tested the Sony CMT-U1BT system? It seems to be better thought out in this regard because it has a three-line display.

Hello,
I just tested a 160 GB external hard drive with a Thomson CS806 hi-fi system that has a USB port.
The manual states that the maximum storage size supported is 20 GB. So I reduced the size to 20 GB and it doesn't work. Then I did various tests at 10 GB, 5 GB, and it works starting from 2 GB.
Does anyone know why it only works at 2 GB?
Thanks

Salut, is there a way to connect an external hard drive to a flat screen if it has USB ports?
When will there be channels and DivX FireWire players?

Hello,
I read through this topic because I wanted to use my external hard drive on my DivX player with a USB input (AVIX from Colr, at €99) and in my case, it works.
I had to reformat my hard drive to FAT32, so with a maximum size of 32GB, and my player reads it perfectly. But be careful, this 32GB FAT32 partition absolutely has to be in the first position, otherwise it won't work. It might be a limitation of my player; it can only see the first partition.
It would be good to try a FAT32 formatting but with a larger capacity. There is a software called MAGIC PARTITION, but it doesn't work on an external hard drive connected via USB. Is there any other software?
Thanks, see you later!
Ben

Despite successfully formatting my WD external hard drive to FAT32 using FAT32FORMATTER, the audio files are still not recognized by my SONY system purchased in 2015?
The very first question that comes to my mind is to know what model your chain is and, respectively, the model of your external hard drive? Have you had the chance to take a look at the complete installation guide for the chain? Are there any recommendations or specific details to consider?
I know these are just questions, but it would be good to dig deep before we get into troubleshooting... I hope you have time to get back to the topic here and share the details :) Looking forward to hearing from you,
The external hard drive is a WD My Passport Ultra 1TB that I managed to format to FAT32 using FAT32FORMATTER
The audio system is a SONY CMT-X7CD which according to the manual would be compatible with FAT32???
