Solved

Hello,
I have a Philips DVD/TNT/USB player to which I connected an Iomega external drive.
I can't read the external drive and only see "root."
Can you tell me what I need to do?
Thank you in advance.

Configuration: Windows XP / Safari 534.10

Hello.
hard drive in ntfs or fat32 (right click properties)?
are you using the original shielded usb cable?
in system settings, check that you are in usb and not in dvd.
using a usb stick, put some mp3 files on it and see if you can play them on your home player.

possible hard drive power issue.
buy a powered usb hub or contact a retailer for hardware advice.

My external drive is in NTFS.
The DVD drive is the type used in cars.
Tested with an MP3 on a USB stick: it works.

It's a portable DivX player for the car.

Use only the shielded mini cable provided with your external drive.
Load a video.
Test it on your PC, a home player.

Do you have 2 USB ports on your USB player?

Note that for it to be perfectly readable:
_Your drive should preferably be formatted in FAT32.
_A hard drive sufficiently powered with 12V.
It needs 2 USB ports, you have this solution.

but it's DIY...
Contact a Fnac retailer, for example, they will have a better wiring solution.

Otherwise, simpler solutions:
_Use a USB stick with large capacity, with 16 GB up to 23 DivXs/3200 MP3s
(check if the DivX player is SDHC compatible)
_Multimedia player type Archos.
