Hello everyone,

In times like these, I can only turn to your site which has helped me so many times to solve my problem.
Just to give you a bit of background, I decided to organize all my photos that I have stored for over 4 years on my external hard drive. So I am organizing, renaming, etc., to ensure that all my files are well organized. I am doing copy-pastes all over the place and after a while, for some reason, the Media Monkey software opens at the same time I transfer photos from one folder to another, my hard drive starts to hum, Media Monkey crashes as does the transfer. I then close Media Monkey which refuses to minimize, and then the transfer restarts, but now all my photos that were in "my pictures" (which I had previously cut and pasted from my PC to my external hard drive) can no longer be opened and thus transferred. The Windows Live photo gallery informs me that it cannot open my photos because "it may have been deleted or it is located in an unavailable location." The images I was trying to copy-paste during the bug no longer appear as if they had disappeared permanently; the folder in which I was trying to transfer them is now empty, and regarding the images that remain, they seem to still be there, but as I told you before, it is impossible to open them, only their icon remains.
I hope that a brilliant soul will help me because I have many memories on this hard drive that I would like to preserve.
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Configuration: Windows Vista / Safari 534.7

I think the first thing to do is to restart the system in order to reset all caches and software in memory...

Then, using Windows Explorer, check that the disk is still visible and that folders are still in place...

Next, check that the files in the folders are still accessible as well.

If that's the case, the usual operations should be able to be carried out again. If not... it's not looking good..!

External hard drives are very convenient, but they are not a real security for data to be preserved...

Thank you for your quick response. I restarted the computer, my external hard drive appears correctly but when I click on it, I’m asked if I want to format it. This is a tricky situation for me, so I prefer to rely on your advice. Thanks again.

Wow, that's not good...
Windows considers the disk to be empty of any data... (even though it should still be there).

Personally, I would lean towards the allocation table being missing, making it impossible for Windows to find anything on the disk. There must be tools under Windows or Linux to restore this, but in my opinion, it shouldn't be done from a USB interface, but directly from the disk controller.

Now, I'll hand it over to those who know more than I do...

Good evening,

I won't be able to help you much, especially since the issue seems serious.

I sincerely believe that your problem will find a solution more easily on one of these three forums:

Hardware;

Software/Drivers;

Windows.

I believe the first one is the best.

I suggest you repost your question linking to this one.

Good luck and have a nice evening.
