here's what I found
- Repair the taskbar:
A downloadable utility available at www.kellys-korner-xp.com/TaskbarRepairToolPlus!.zip can be very helpful. Once the ZIP archive is unzipped, double-click on this executable file: TaskbarRepairToolPlus!.exe. A dialog box will alert you that certain commands will be disabled until you have acquired a license. In the Taskbar Problems drop-down list, click on the issue that resembles your problem, and then click the Repair button.
Here is a partial list of problems that this utility can solve:
* The taskbar is missing.
* Toolbars on the taskbar disappear at every startup.
* The Lock the Taskbar command is grayed out.
* Icons of open applications do not appear on the taskbar.
* The Toolbars command is grayed out.
* The Auto-hide the Taskbar command is disabled after each restart.
Many other options are available regarding the notification area and the quick launch area.

- The notification area chevron has disappeared:
There are apparently three possible solutions:
These two services are disabled: SSDP Discovery Service and Universal Plug and Play Device Host.
In this case, just set them to Manual startup (not Automatic).
There is an issue with one of the programs present in the notification area. In which case, follow this procedure:
1) Access the taskbar properties.
2) Click the Customize button.
3) Set each item present to the Always hide option.
4) Apply the changes.
5) Do the same thing again but set them to the Hide when inactive option.
6) Apply the changes once more.
. Strangely, here is a manipulation that worked perfectly:
1) Click on Start/Run then type: services.msc
2) Disable these two services: SSDP Discovery Service and Universal Plug and Play Device Host.
