Hello,
I would like to know how to add an outline to text using GIMP (for example, to put a slight black border around white text)
Thank you in advance for your help

Configuration: Windows Vista / Safari 533.4

    Hello!
    It's very simple!
    Here are the steps:
[ To see a little where we need to right-click: http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/127235Capturedcran20130426131406.png
First, right-click on the text layer (here called text) then click on Alpha to Selection.
Then go to Select > Border and specify the border size you want (I recommend between 1 and 4) then Validate. Next, in your palette, set the color of Foreground (also called "PP color") to the color you want for the border (for example, white. But don't use pink if the text is originally pink; the effect won't look very nice..) then do Edit > Fill with Foreground color.
Then if you want to work on your creation and not just the text in particular after this step, to remove the dotted lines around your text, do Select > None.

Little problem for me, everything has turned white in the selection, so my word has disappeared, did I miss something or is there a step missing?

You forgot that you need to create a layer under your text, then it's the new layer that you must fill with the text.

The solution is good but it lacks an important detail. After making alpha to selection, do Selection > Inverse. This way, you will create an outer border only around your word and not internally, which looks better.

Indeed, a layer is missing! First, you need to duplicate the layer, then right-click > select to alpha (on the layer below!), go to select > border, and finally edit > fill with the PP color. Thank you Nelly and bmwalid, I didn't know how to do it! :-)

Hi, so it's simple: you right-click on the layer where your text is, then you click on "Alpha to Selection," then you click on "Select" in the menu bar, and after that on "Border," and there you go! :)

Honestly, given your explanation, it's not that simple... I'm just saying.
