Solved

Hello,

I'm looking to protect a Word document (to prevent any unwanted modifications) but also to be able to use mail merge.

If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

    Hello,

    Put it in "Read-only".
    Right-click on the file icon—Properties.
It will then be protected against any modifications.
Until this option is removed, or it is saved under another name.

You can also protect it with a password. Its data will then be inaccessible.

      Hello Gihef,

Thank you for this idea, but it’s not what I’m looking for.

I shouldn’t be able to change a single character when the Word file is open, but I need to be able to use the mail merge.

    Hello,

    So, you need to clarify.

This file, which needs to be protected, is it the source of the merged data in another document? Or is it the document receiving the data?

If it's the source of the data, it seems to me that we can still access it even if it's read-only.

If it's the document receiving the data, it’s difficult to use it in a mail merge without wanting to modify it.

Otherwise, nothing prevents you from doing a mail merge while having a protected file open that has nothing to do with it.

    Be more specific.

    Hello Gihef,

    To be more precise:

I need to print personalized letters. I can't launch the series all at once because the quantity is too large.
For that, I have a Word file for the letter and an Excel file containing the addresses.

I want to be able to block modifications of the Word file on the screen, such as adding or deleting characters, but still be able to do the mail merge.

All this to avoid printing letters with extra or missing characters (as has already happened to me).

Does this clarification work for you?

    Ah, well, that's better ;-)
Well, then, in that case, try (I've never tested it) to see if you can merge in a form (the .doc).
A protected form where only the fields receiving data will be accessible.

Or else, create a macro that will check if the document has been modified before proceeding with the merge. And if so, it will close it without saving and reopen it...

I tried to merge to a form and didn't find anything.

As for macros, I don't know anything about it.

    Can you still help me?

Well, it is about defining the letter you send (the one that receives data from the .xls) as a form.
In a form, we can define areas that will be editable. And only those. The surrounding text cannot be modified.
We can even choose what we want to print.
If you place the merge fields in these areas, it should work.
The help from Word will be useful to understand how to design a form. If I remember correctly (I don’t have Word at home), there is even a demo or an assistant. Or information here:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/results.aspx?Query=formulaire&Scope=DC%2cEM%2cES%2cFX%2cHA%2cHP%2cQZ%2cRC%2cTC%2cXT&QueryID=bBL8hv2ZU&App=WD&TRC=100&iStartAt=26

For the macro, if you don't know it, forget it. It would take too long to learn. However, a form is doable.

It's impossible; if the document is restricted to "form," the mailing tools are greyed out and inaccessible. And vice versa. As soon as you tell Word that it's a mail merge letter, the "restriction" tab is greyed out and inaccessible... This could be an improvement to make in the next version of Word 2015???

    Hello,
I'm having a problem when printing a Word document; it also prints the sources of this document.
I'm not sure what to do?
