Desktop PC won't boot and emits 4 beeps

Hello,

Difficult return from vacation: my Dell Vostro 200 desktop PC won't start: the ON button lights up, and it emits a series of 4 beeps.
The beep code tells me that 4 beeps mean:
"Memory read/write failure.
*Check if any specific conditions need to be met regarding the installation of modules in the slots (see the section on Reinstalling or Adding a Memory Module).
*Verify that the memory being used is compatible with your computer.
*If the problem persists, contact Dell (see the Contacting Dell section)."

Does this mean that one of my 4 memory sticks is simply dead? Can that prevent the PC from starting? I hope that's all it is; it's been a while since I've backed up my PC (it's a work computer! Not serious!).
Thanks for your advice.

Configuration: Windows XP / Internet Explorer 7.0

Yes, if a RAM stick is dead, the PC won't boot, so the solution is: remove all the sticks, put one back in, try with another if the PC doesn't start...

I swapped barrette 1 and 3. It's working again. Thank you.
