HP Pavillion DV4000 - Reinstallation XP

There's no point in installing Windows from another PC; just for precaution, wait until the installation finishes, but it's useless.

Your problem comes from booting from a CD; you need to find out why, in my opinion you should look at the BIOS settings, is your new hard drive SATA or IDE?

Hello,

You must absolutely install Windows XP with the PC that will use it.

Rather strange, is the Windows CD in good condition? Too many scratches could be the cause of your problem.

Thank you for your quick response. The CD is new; I just took it out to reinstall Windows. I removed the protective paper from the case.

The screenshot you show resembles mine. The only difference is I have exclamation points on certain peripherals, and that changes at startup.

I am formatting the new DD. do you think that could help move things forward?

You say you have exclamation points on some peripherals, maybe you installed your hard drive incorrectly?

To format your hard drive, did you connect it to another PC?

No, the hard drive is properly recognized by the Phoenix BIOS utility with fixed 0 noted I think.

And I’m formatting it with another PC, under XP SP2, which is roughly the same version as the laptop’s CD.,?

Is that bad?

IDE like before. and I’m not reinstalling Windows, I’m just formatting the new HDD because when I connected it via USB it wasn’t recognized, so in My Computer/Manage I made it appear.

Why I don’t know yet, I thought it might be a boot problem from the CD, so I recovered another XP version but I burned it as an ISO, and by omitting making it bootable (p.s. I didn’t manage to do it).
So I opted to try to solve the problem by formatting NTFS to see if that changes anything.
But I don’t understand why I can’t boot from the original CD…??

To be honest, neither do I, can you give me the list of peripherals you see in your BIOS? (when you choose which drive to put first)

okay the formatting is almost finished as soon as I put the disk back in place I’ll tell you. I’ve just signed up on your forum.
Question: are the devices at the top of the list supposed to boot first? or are those at the bottom of the list?

You need to position your CD drive facing the 1, in place of "Removable devices" on the image: http://www.cuug.ab.ca/branderr/mepis/Phoenix2.jpg

Then (logically) you should be able to boot from it!

Hi, I’d like to know if you managed to format your PC. Because I have the same PC and I have the same problem—I can’t get the PC to boot from the CD.
