Hello,
I installed Windows 7 yesterday and I realized today that the sound is crackling terribly (everything was fine under Vista), both when a "system" sound is played and when I play music...
I have obviously tested the built-in speakers, a headset, and one of the external speakers.
So everything suggests that the problem comes from the sound "driver" (Realtek).
I want to clarify that I installed Windows 7 cleanly (after formatting the hard drive).
This is an Asus laptop, and the upgrade was done using the CD sent by Asus that includes the latest drivers for the PC.
Thank you for your help, and see you soon.

Hello,
I had the same issues as you with Win 7, on an Asus laptop. (crackling, they’re awful...)
The latest Realtek drivers (ver 2.40) or those provided by Asus on their site don’t work!!! I thought ASUS was one of the few that actually tests their hardware...
This is not a malware problem but really a driver issue! No need to waste your time with the available anti-malware!
After trying all the solutions proposed on this forum, nothing worked! The generic Win 7 driver was the best but still not perfect...
And indeed, the settings proposed by "Mel_Gibson" 16bits 44kHz (CD quality) and disabling sound effects improve the situation but light crackling still persists!
It's annoying for those who are sensitive to sounds!
I found a solution that works for me: Installing the Realtek drivers for Vista Ver:R2.02. Win 7 accepts them without any issue. The sound effects now work... and the cherry on top: the crackling is gone! And everything works HDMI, Mic, and so on...
Problem solved!
Hoping this can help you and work for you...
See you...

On my Asus X71SL, the problem was solved by installing the 2.02 drivers that are over a year old for Vista!!
Operating systems evolve but hacking is still relevant; soon we'll have to use Windows 98 drivers.....

Thank you very much, I had the same problem since the installation of Windows 7 on my Asus X71SL laptop, and by installing: Audio Driver for Vista, Version V6.0.1.5683, from the Asus website: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&m=X71SL&p=3&s=125&os=24&hashedid=VUta9GoKvKtJx21G

Hi,
Following a driver update for testing, I found myself in the same situation as a year ago, so I found my old post, it still works!
Just, you need to clean your PC of the old drivers because even when launching the old one, it looks for newer updates on the PC and installs them! (C:\Program Files\Realtek to clean)

I think I've found it, but I'm not sure if it's that.
I believe that this crackling comes from my internal microphone. I'm trying to disable it, but I'm not able to. If someone could help me, please.

Hello, if installing the latest drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's website does not solve the problem.
And if installing older drivers (in compatibility mode) that worked on a previous version of Windows does not fix it either.
You can try:
*Accessing the "sound" icon in the control panel
-In the "Playback" tab, highlight the default device and access its properties
In the page that appears, choose the "Enhancements" tab: reset to default settings and check the box "Disable all enhancements"
-In the "Advanced" tab, ensure the selection is set to: 16 bits, 44100 Hz (CD quality) and that both boxes on the page are checked
*In the "Levels" tab, there are several choices at the bottom.
Set "PC BEEP" to 0.

Hello,
I've been having an issue with the sound on my PC for a while now (about 2 to 3 weeks). It's crackling across several applications. (I've been using Win7 Pro 64-bit since its release, so everything was working fine until now)...
Let me explain with a few examples:
- When I launch Windows Media Player, the sound plays fine, but after a certain amount of time, it starts to crackle. I didn't have this issue before...
- With Media Player Classic, when I start an HD movie (1080p), the sound is good initially, but then there are like micro cuts, silences lasting 1 second that eventually cause the sound to become out of sync. Similarly, I didn't have this issue before...
- I have Duke Nukem (game) which does the same thing: the sound is good, then it starts crackling for no reason during gameplay.
For your information:
- I installed the K-Lite Codec Pack (to watch my HD movies, DTS, AC3...), and I also have AC3 Filter as a codec.
I don't think it's a codec conflict because I didn't have this issue before, but you never know...
- Operating system
Windows 7 Pro (x64) (build 7600)
Processor
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P7350 2000 MHz (Penryn)
Motherboard
Acer, Inc. Makalu Not Applicable
If someone could shed some light on this, I would be very grateful as I use my PC to watch movies and do music production, so I'm starting to get a bit worried...
If you need any more information to help in your assessment, I'm at your disposal.
Thank you all for your help, which I am sure will be valuable to me.
Have a good evening everyone.
Logan.

No one to answer, it's a shame, I don't dare to go for it, I don't know Windows 7 yet.
And what if you try reinstalling the sound driver (Realtek)?
aloes

But I obviously reinstalled Realtek, I even restored the generic driver built into Windows 7 (and I must say the crackling is less frequent, but still present!)
So I still haven't found a solution to eliminate this bug.

A suggestion, since you've just installed Windows 7 and are thinking about a lot of different software, there may be an incompatibility between programs or an infection: maybe run a scan with Malwarebytes here:
https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/securite/14361-malwarebytes-anti-malware/
It's a very useful software to keep on a PC to scan from time to time. Before scanning, click on "update" and then on "scan."
so be it

Hello!
The solution that involves using the generic Microsoft driver works 50% of the time, as it's impossible to use the microphone.
I found the solution: with the Realtek driver, go to "Speaker Properties," then to the "Advanced Statistics" tab, and there you change the default format to "DVD Quality." There you go, now no more sound issues.
Enjoy

Well, same problem, everything was working very well since the release of Seven, stable system, no issues. I should clarify that I do audio acquisition with a Phase 22 from Terratec, which worked wonderfully for these past two months, and now there’s a nasty crackling and it feels like the sound slows down and speeds up. I’ve done 4 system reinstallations; I’ve also tested with the other sound cards I have, and I still have this issue that makes any music listening impossible without those old crackles. I recreated a system partition with XP and there are no problems, so should I abandon Windows 7? Is it not made for multimedia?
Hi everyone
Like everyone here, I have sound issues on Seven with Realtek drivers. I've tried just about all the proposed solutions and nothing works, my sound fluctuates in intensity and I have regular crackling...
When are they going to decide to do something? I'm fed up with buying equipment that doesn't work properly!
Anyway, if anyone finds a new solution, I'm all ears...

Hello hello,
I personally have an Asus F5VL laptop, and I solved the problem by installing the older drivers that came with Vista. You just need to run the setup in compatibility mode for Vista. My sound card is a Realtek, and now I have driver 1.61 and no more issues.
Good luck to you^^

Good evening
I had the same issue with crackling on a Toshiba Satellite with Windows Seven too BUT after a Realtek update, I simply did a system restore before that update and it worked perfectly
It’s not a coincidence because the next day I let the update go through again and it was the same......... crackling again, so try checking the updates.

Is there a speaker that's malfunctioning and another one that isn't working at all? If so, I have a solution to propose to you. Download the driver for your sound card, and then follow this procedure. Go to the Realtek configuration, which has a red sound symbol, then you'll see the sound outputs: your PC's blue, pink, green, and others on the device where you connected your sound, that is to say, the color. Right-click on it and set it as default; it worked for me.

I have the same problem as you... I want to try your solution but I can't find version R2.02, I've looked everywhere... So can you tell me where I can find this version?
THANKS ^^
With your solution, it's working without any buzzing now ;)

thanks to you, it works very well now without any noise.
