Hello everyone, here is my problem:

When I click on a *.exe or a shortcut, Notepad opens and displays incomprehensible characters.
As a result, I can't perform a system restore, and the command remains unusable even in safe mode.

What should I do to resolve this issue?
Configuration: Windows XP

Look at which program should open .exe files
(folder options > file types...)

Knowledge is only valuable if it is shared by all!!!!

Actually, it's fine, I solved my problem; there was a similar post in the virus/security section.
I didn't do everything that was suggested, but it was a very good lead.

However, I just realized that I still can't perform a system restore. The rstrui.exe process appears in the task manager, but that's it, nothing on the screen.
I updated my antivirus, and it didn't find any viruses.

Well, I'm sorry to bring up such an old topic, but it's the first one that appears on Google, and I found the solution:

If, like me, your applications won't open anymore, just go to Control Panel, Folder Options, and click on File Types.

Then, the .exe extension isn't there... what a bummer!

So we create a new one, enter EXE, click on Advanced, Application, and OK!

There we see that applications open with Notepad.... Just click on Restore, and that's it!!!

Well, if the mods think this post is too old, you can delete it, but I think there are always some idiots (myself included, unfortunately) who, by bad luck, will end up in my case and will be happy to have this help!!!!

(I was still scared.... so I quickly copied my documents to my external hard drive :p )

ARRGGHHH!!

I had this kind of problem tonight too!!

I checked all the forums and nothing works!

I am on Vista and they talk about tabs or something that doesn't exist on Vista!!

NEVERTHELESS, for those in my situation, after hours of various attempts, I FOUND a very simple solution that anyone can understand!!

Here is the method:

Go create another user account, with administrator rights!! And then everything will work again!

( start -- control panel ---- user accounts ---- add user account ---- create new account ---- and check administrators )
And that's it! On this new account, everything works again!!

Afterwards, if you have 2 hard drives, you transfer your videos, music, programs to the one without Windows and copy everything back to your new account!

Change the corrupted account to "standard account" and THEN DELETE IT!!!!!!

I managed to restore the .exe files to be executable. (Before they opened with Notepad)
I went to 'Control Panel' then under 'Folder Options', 'File Types' and I created a .exe and then set its value back to default!
And it works!!!
(The .reg file didn't work for me ??!!)

Good evening, I am sorry to insist, but I have the same problem and it's a Vista, and in Vista there is no 'file type', so if you have another method please. Thank you

I apologize for the mistakes.

Good evening

I just had this problem tonight.
As a result of a mistake, all my .exe files open with....... VLC.
Of course, system restore no longer works, and neither do the software...
I managed to open Firefox and I'm here on CCM.
Fortunately, and I take this opportunity to thank all those who devote themselves to responding to us.
I find a 90% answer to my..... many problems here.

I have been getting used to my new computer since I bought it with Vista! ...

The solution of a new user account works well but... is there another solution, as those for XP do not work
I specify that it is a mistake and not a virus
Thank you for your response

Please know that you are also helping all those who make mistakes but do not write, and indeed for this problem our "friend" Google directs us here.

Thanks again for your excellent forum
