Hello,

On Windows XP, everything was fine (or almost),
My little brother played on the PC
and now all, I mean all the .exe applications
open with NOTEPAD!!! Even system restore, Windows accessories, Dreamweaver, Blender...

I can't do anything anymore.

I tried right-clicking on the file, but I can't find

Please help me because I am nothing without my PC ;-p

Hello,

Download this utility --> RstAssociations Version .scr
and put it on the desktop.

Run it (as administrator)
Click on --> all
Click on --> restore

Restart the PC

Hello,

Open Notepad and copy the following code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile] "EditFlags"=hex:d8,07,00,00 @="Application" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open] @="" "EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command] @="\"%1\" %*" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon] @="%1"

Save this file as "exefile.reg" and then double-click on it (merge it).
Keep us updated :-)

Bye

Hi

I tried your registry keys and they don't work for me :s

Glad it worked for "skywebman59", but I don't see how that's possible since the header of an .exe file is not d8 07 00 00 but 38 07 00 00
So for those who have tried this code in vain, just replace that number...

It worked perfectly for me! Thank you, I had been looking for a solution for days!

Try SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK on a file of a certain type
It should show you "Open with", and you just have to choose the right program, knowing that it is preferable to open EXE files with explorer.exe ;)
But it won't be cool to do all that again... Try repairing Windows with your installation CD maybe.

I thought and did the same thing that you told me, I reinstalled Windows and the problem is solved.

It's a bit long to reinstall all the drivers and the programs that were in the registry, but it's okay... ;-P

And the little brother is tweaking the PC, he’s blasting off to Mars!!!

Thanks anyway, StreM. See you later!

otherwise if your brother starts again,
you can download regcleaner
and go to the change open with menu
it finds the registry keys associated with "open with..." without needing to be an expert in regedit

Thank you,
The winner is SirHill, it's the best solution,

because I had regcleaner and there was no way to launch it, it would also open in Notepad!

Thanks again and long live CCM and its readers without whom we would often be in deep trouble, without being vulgar.

Hi poppies

I'm currently pedaling, I have exactly the same problem as skywebman.
I've tried the exefile.reg thing, it seems to work when the message appears:

"Unable to import C:\\Users\me\exefile.reg"

It's driving me crazy. Thank goodness Firefox/IE work.

Qu'est-ce que tu entends par IE/fox car moi j'ai ton problème mais j'arrives pas à l'ouvrir ?

Internet Explorer and Firefox are the only applications that open normally.
For the moment, I can only work around the problem by opening my applications via the exefile.reg right click> open with > and I choose the program
It doesn't work with everything unfortunately.

Well then?!.. no genius can help me?..

Tell me if your registry editor opens with Notepad. To check, go to Run and type regedit. If it opens with Notepad, welcome to the club of the desperate. Otherwise, your problem can easily be solved (I'm in the same boat as you, but I can't get "Open with" to work even when I click Shift + right-click) ==> what's your secret?

that's exactly where my problem lies:

the exefile.reg opens but gets pinched by something that says:

"Unable to import C:\\Users\me\exefile.reg"

and I tried to do a "system restore" but nothing works, that jerk of a notepad keeps insisting on coming back

crap, long live PCs, I'm going to throw mine out the window and buy a Mac

Notice to everyone who has this problem!!!
Switch to safe mode and navigate in Ms Dos
==>rstrui for a system restore then type SystemPropertiesProtection if no restore point suits you
==>regedit to directly access the registry editor
PS: Under Vista, it’s a mess!!!!

Hello everyone, I have the same problem, all the *.exe files open with notepad2; but I can open them by right-clicking and selecting (run as...) and disabling (protect my computer and my data from unauthorized programs) or by using the admin password. But it's still annoying. I think I will reinstall Windows, that's probably the only solution. Thank you all.

Ah well, for me too, everything opens with Notepad. I went to check my extensions and everything is in .txt while I want it in .exe. But hey, let me know what to do. I have the same problem as
skywebman59, but I screwed up because I opened a keygen to see my key and then I had the same issue as you.
So, see you later, help me solve this fucking problem, see you later!

You can right-click --> run as --> uncheck "protect my computer...." and normally it works (unless with me for 98% of applications).

Hello everyone,
yes, it's true, it’s really annoying ... all my applications open with Adobe Reader, and even WORSE!! I have Windows Vista Pro as my operating system :(
I wanted to be clever and uninstalled Adobe Reader, but now it's giving me Open With, just imagine: no Firefox, no Word, nor Excel, nor recovery program, nor regedit, nor notepad :'(

the only one that works is Internet Explorer, I really don’t know why at all ... I’ve searched a lot on the internet and I’ve tried everything.... actually, the problem happened to me yesterday, a friend associated the .exe files with Adobe .... in Windows XP, 98, 95...etc, there is the tab (( file types )) in the display settings (folder options where you can associate extensions with programs ... but in Vista!!! it’s a nightmare :(

Good luck to all the people who have the same issue, and good luck to me too :)

have a nice day
