I was looking for a solution and dj-steph just provided it.

It should be noted that Snagit is more focused on still capture and it's Camtasia Studio (from the same developer) that is more focused on video capture.

Here is the response from technical support:

Hello,

the black screen is caused by graphics acceleration. It must be disabled for video recording, either in SnagIt or in Camtasia Studio.
You can find information in our SnagIt FAQs at

http://fr.techsmith.com/products/snagit/faqs.asp#video

I tried capturing Media Player and Real Player and the color of the video was entirely filled with a solid color.
When Camtasia or SnagIt captures a block of color instead of an image that appears correct on the screen, the problem is usually due to the hardware graphics acceleration used to display the image. Newer Microsoft and RealNetworks media players are ideal for trying to utilize any available hardware graphics acceleration in the system. For example, some systems have graphics hardware that can perform hardware video overlay on the screen that bypasses the normal rendering memory of Windows that SnagIt captures. Most video capture programs used to capture from a video camera use hardware video overlay by default to preview their video. Note that this type of problem affects all capture programs and even the image copied to the clipboard by the Print Screen key.

The best solution is to disable hardware acceleration in the application that is streaming the video or to disable hardware acceleration system-wide.

To disable acceleration in:

Media Player: in Media Player 7, select Tools > Options > Performance. In Media Player v6.4 and previous versions, select View > Options > Playback. In both cases, under the Hardware acceleration function, choose the No option.
RealPlayer G2: Select Options/Preferences from the RealPlayer menu. Choose the "Performance" tab and disable the "Use optimized video display" setting. You may need to stop and restart any movie that was being streamed for the change to take effect.

For Apple QuickTime, select Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences. In the box, select Video Settings and disable all options in the Direct Draw function.

To disable hardware graphics acceleration for all applications in Windows 2000, select Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshooting, in other versions of Windows 2000, select Control Panel > System >> Performance tab > Graphics > Advanced Settings. In both cases, choose the No option under the Hardware acceleration function.

To avoid a black screen when capturing video with SNAGIT from a .mov file played with VLC media player, go to Preferences > Video > uncheck Video output in overlay.
