New printer: sold with cartridge?

Hello,
This is the first time I'm buying a printer :D
So usually, does the manufacturer sell their stuff with or without cartridges? Because I can't find anything on the sales sites, it's a big mess.

For your information, the one I'm interested in: the Canon mp540. 
Configuration: Linux Firefox 3.0.13

    normally they are sold with a cartridge, well I bought a large number of HP, Lexmark, and Canon all sold with a cartridge.
