Problem with Dofus?

Solved/Closed

Hello,

Here’s a quick outline of my problem: my son called the number 0899234567 which, if I understood correctly, provides a code to subscribe to DOFUS. I received a first rather hefty invoice from France Télécom. After explaining things with my kid, it turns out he didn't actually use this code (and rightly so, as he doesn't have access to the family computer); however, he gave this code to a friend.
My question: is it possible that the code is linked to my phone number and, therefore, charges could be incurred every time someone connects, even if the call didn't come from my home? Is that technically feasible?
For your information, while the first bill was significant, the second one is astronomical. We’ve even had the audiotel numbers blocked.
Thank you for your clarifications.

Hello Soso,

I'm a fan of Dofus and therefore I play a lot of this game. I have already bought codes via phone and even via SMS or credit card, and I've never had any problems. The code given is only usable once and is therefore only paid once. Once the code is entered on the game's website, it cannot be used again.
Have you checked where the number that debited your account comes from? If it's indeed the audiotel number for Dofus (Ankama Games), give them a call and sort out the issue ^^

See you soon...

Thank you for your quick response. And yes, the number is always the same (Ankama). Do you have a number I could reach them at? I’ve done various searches but can’t find the info.
Thanks again

I have the same problem with my son, but he apparently didn't realize it was paid every time: I would like to take action against Dofus, do you have a phone number or a contact? Thank you very much!

maybe your son called several times, check it out, I also play Dofus and when I'm not subscribed I call in secret, check if he can log into his account in front of you and look at his subscription time, maybe the suspicions will be cleared up (he might be a little annoyed)

The problem is that he tells me he gave the code to a friend and now he can't remember it (clever, right?). Conclusion: it's impossible to verify his connection time.
But is it possible to "crack" the account? In other words, can we play with the code without going through Ankama Games?
Thanks for the answer

To answer your question, yes, you can play with the code without going through Ankama Games... if your son is telling the truth, he may have given the code to a friend, and that friend can very well subscribe to Dofus to play with that code. He will then have a week of free subscription since you, on your bill, will have paid for his subscription.
But you can also check your son's account to know his subscription time; you never know.
You can also contact the Ankama Games support team on their website: just type Ankama Games in Google and open the first link. On this site, you can also check your son's subscriptions; you just need his login details.

I hope I have helped you.
See you soon, SoSo

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I will try to contact Ankama. What bothers me is that on my FT bill, the number keeps appearing regularly for more than a week. Sometimes the number shows up 30 times in a single day at about 2 or 3 minutes apart. I want to clarify that these are times when my son is not at home.

Hello, I have exactly the same issue with my phone bill. After blaming my kids, I deprived them of the computer (I set a password) and the problem hasn’t been resolved. The dates and times correspond to moments when no one is at home. My service provider doesn't want to hear anything and I have to pay. The bill increases by more than €100 each time. The only solution I've found is to cancel my internet and phone subscription and change my number. I hope that will resolve the problem!!!! If anyone knows of a way to contest these abuses, I would be happy to hear it!!!!

Hello everyone, I completely understand that you are upset about the amounts on your respective bills.
I am 27 years old, I have a stable job, a fulfilling social life, and I have been playing Dofus for two years. Why this precision? Because judging by the messages above, Ankama would be a company that ruins people's lives and is actually just a large-scale scam. However, there are certain things that need to be clarified about everything that has been said...

The first point I want to raise: there is a large number of players who trade audiotel codes for kamas (the in-game currency). Thus, they quickly become relatively rich and can buy the best equipment on the market (I want to point out that Ankama is not responsible for the prices of items in the game). This is not about blaming Dofus or Ankama but rather Audiotel. Audiotel and Ankama have no common ground. The mention of "Dofus" on your bill is most likely just a surcharge justification provided by Audiotel to your provider (who then relays it to you).

Next, you have not precisely defined where the problem originates... An audiotel code is a unique and temporary code that allows you to purchase a good or a service online (one code = one week subscription. One month subscription = 4 codes, thus 4 calls of 3-4 minutes charged). Therefore, once this code is obtained, it can be given to a third party (as already mentioned above) with no link to the phone number used for payment. Thus, Ankama cannot extort money from you via these codes. These codes also cannot allow any potential hackers to purchase more via your bill. So what remains? In my opinion, there are only two solutions left. You do indeed have a neighbor (could it be that your child has a friend nearby?) who managed to figure out how to use your phone line (if it is a cordless phone and the problems persist, why not install a landline to ensure that?). The second solution is simply that the information your children gave you is false. I know it is never pleasant to see strangers questioning the word of a loved one. But there is a fundamental principle in computing (which could apply to your case) that 95% of problems come from the user.

I also read: "I find it unacceptable that this way of operating exists to make money. Using children to 'extract' money from them borders on criminal." Without wanting to enter into a thorny debate (given that I am taking the time to write to help you save time and avoid unnecessary issues) Ankama states that all payments must be made with the consent of an adult. If your child does not comply with the terms of use, Ankama is in no way responsible. You may find this unfortunate but that is how things are done. To make a quick comparison, pornographic sites are banned for those under 18, but it only takes a click on "OK" to access them...

I would also like to react to this part:

"It should be known that this company has benefitted from European funds in the Nord department: it's nice to pillage families and their children!!!
I admit that we currently have few solutions to this problem. Legally, we are not sure about the outcome unless we are several families but we are not certain about that.
In any case, we often think of families who do not regularly monitor their children and their bank accounts: this type of situation can be dramatic. In this case, all our children have been led to commit acts of delinquency of which we are unaware of the consequences on their moral development and that is a point worth exploring. "

This company provides a game. There is no obligation to participate nor even to pay to play (admittedly, the game can get boring quickly if you're not subscribed, but still). And it is indeed a profit-oriented company. There must be hundreds of forums where parents complain about their children's addiction to PlayStation games or others (each game costing around €50 and usually having a lifespan (time until completing the game) of several hundred hours), while Dofus via standard subscription (so not audiotel but visa or other) costs €5/month and doesn't really have an end... I leave you to do the math. So yes, it is addictive, but it is not that hard to regulate and not spend all your free time on it.

Regarding "acts of delinquency," I return again to individual responsibility. Remind your child that money doesn't grow on trees and keep an eye on their actions. You will likely have a smaller bill.

I apologize if I have been a bit harsh or if I have offended any of you, but there were too many contradictions and assumptions in the messages I read above. I felt compelled to enlighten you as best I could.

I hope this can be useful to you, and I wish you good luck in paying those exorbitant bills.

I will try to come back and read the responses in the coming days to answer any additional questions.

I'm sorry, but games like Dofus, Warcraft, or others are money traps because it seems that when you're underage, you can't pay with a credit card (and the payment site of Dofus is not secure) and generally, parents don't want to pay for that! A PlayStation game has an unlimited lifespan because you can replay it or even continue to play after finishing it with new missions, but Dofus, the day the game stops and "no-lifers" have paid for 5 years of subscription to avoid paying afterward, they will lose money, and if you call "Dofus" a game, you're a bit silly and naïve because the goal is for the company to make money at the expense of children.

Hello KANG,

Thanks for taking the time to shed some light on my confusion. So if I understood correctly (and that was my starting post), my kid shares his code with a friend, but no matter how often the friend logs in, it will be included in the "package" for 7 days. Is that right? If he logs in 150 times on the site, the price will be the same since he uses the same code for a given duration? Okay, I see. Now, how can we explain the fact that the DOFUS number appears on my phone bill at times when my kid is not here (you’re somewhat right in saying we should sometimes be wary of our kids’ words), but I know for a fact that he wasn't here. On average, this number is called every 2 to 3 minutes. How does that explain? That’s what I want to understand... France Télécom hasn’t given me any valid answers to this issue.
Regarding the concept, I agree that ANKAMA doesn’t do social. Where I disagree is calling on an Audiotel service that doesn’t really clarify the cost of purchasing codes (I called and it’s true that it’s a bit murky, but isn't that the point?), and this game is aimed, after all, quite a bit at kids.
Explaining the value of money to them? Sure, that’s been done and redone, but is it really understood? I have serious doubts.
Still, compared to other posts I've seen and given my phone bill, let's just say I’m not complaining. It’s the method I criticize...
That said, thanks for these explanations.

Dofus is a subscription. This means that with an audio code, you are subscribed for 7 days.
Calls every 2 minutes remind me of the kids in Dofus who sell codes for in-game currency (something that's forbidden). Like "Exchange audiotel for 10000 kamas, contact me".
The kid quickly makes 50000 kamas.

I know your problem since I had the same one. Your son either hacked into his computer’s line or one of his friend's. I know how to do it since I did it a while back. Given the amount of your bill, he must have taken out a 2-year subscription. I'm a moderator, and to stop this problem, I would need his account name and your number. I understand that you may not want to, but this might be the only way.

Hello :)

A moderator who makes a mistake every two words? Stop the scam, really not nice for parents who find themselves in quite a bind.

In any case, never give your codes and passwords.

I'm asking a real moderator who might pass by to delete xsaillium's message, thanks in advance :)

Good luck to the parents, and indeed, I lean towards the idea of code reselling for kamas.

Oh well, this is definitely more serious. Contact Ankama support as soon as possible, and if they can't do anything, contact your provider to resolve the issue. In your case, I would call my provider right away.

I sent a registered letter to FT (still no response by the way) + I requested a technical investigation from them (aside from telling me that the numbers come from my landline: nothing new) + I blocked the audiotel numbers.
I am considering filing a complaint and reaching out to a consumer association to see.
I will indeed get in touch with Ankama support.

Thank you for your help and your information

I have the same problem today with my son on Dofus: did you file a complaint? Was there any result? How to proceed?
Thank you!

File a complaint? Why? Nothing illegal has been done; it is up to you to monitor your children on the internet, not them.

In my opinion, there are two possibilities:

- Failure on the line

- Someone is using your phone without your knowledge. Keep an eye out, it's a serious problem.

soso

Line failure? Why not, but the technical investigation conducted by FT doesn't clarify much
Line hacking? FT wouldn't have seen it? That said, I regularly get people calling my landline asking for an unknown person. But I think (at least I hope) that FT checked during their investigation. I don’t really know what to do anymore.

First of all, Maxime, there's no need to speak to people that way!
Just a reminder that all game and toy manufacturers "make money off the backs of children," as you say. The only thing you're forgetting is that it's the parents who earn money and who - in most cases - decide whether or not to pay to please their children. But anyway... I have no desire to engage in a troll debate. Just know that I am neither foolish nor naive. I've just decided as a responsible adult that playing Dofus and paying for the work done by the entire team of programmers and developers seems normal to me (all work deserves pay, and it seems that a good number of people would dream of spending their days creating a game that entertains so many). Anyway. I will end the debate here because it leads nowhere.

Soso, indeed, once the code is used (it only serves once in exchange for validating a one-week subscription), there is no additional cost for each connection, for example. So a week of play costs the price of the communication (3 or 4 euros if I remember correctly) and nothing more.

Regarding calls every 2-3 minutes, that's the reason I leaned towards selling Audiotel codes for virtual money in Dofus (kamas). People who buy them in Dofus generally look for a regular and reliable supplier who can provide them with a month of subscription for a few tens of thousands of kamas. Then, when everything goes well, the name of the person selling codes quickly circulates. That's how some children end up busy selling their parents' money for virtual currency... It's a sad waste, but it happens.

However... you say you are 100% sure that your son wasn't home and that he would be the only one playing in your house. So there must definitely be a "door" somewhere that allows an intruder to take advantage of your line. It seems I read in one of the posts that you had a cordless phone. I don’t have extensive knowledge in the field, but in principle regarding cordless headsets and Wi-Fi routers, it doesn't seem impossible that a neighbor has the same phone as you and could use your line (for example, by unplugging their transmitter and using only their handset). A Google search on your phone model and "hacking" or other variants might give you more information. (I’m trying to trace the path between you and Audiotel step by step). I also don’t think that, in this specific case, France Télécom could help you find out which handset was used.

After the handset and the receiver, you still have the wiring. Try to follow your cables (especially those outside the house) to see if they are still intact and if there are other cables that may have been grafted onto them.

As for the murky side of Audiotel, I don't see what's unclear. By following the subscription procedure and selecting Audiotel as the payment method, I clearly see "0903 51 959 1.25€/min. + possible operator surcharges, Approximate duration of 2 minutes. If there’s a problem, please contact Allopass support at this address: contact@allopass.com" (I’m in Belgium, so the number and cost of communication may vary). This message is displayed in bold just above the field where you need to enter the Audiotel code. Regarding the things that are said on the phone (I don’t remember them), they are mainly just chatter aimed at keeping the person on the line before providing what the caller is expecting: a code.

I therefore advise you to check point by point the various possible vulnerabilities and then reach out to Audiotel since they are the ones overcharging you. (The payment to Ankama is made by Audiotel after the transaction)

Good luck moving forward.

What I mean is that children fall into the trap of premium-rate numbers (even me, and yet I knew the trap!), normally Orange sets a maximum balance for premium-rate numbers but this is never respected.

Well, we're not going to make it a debate ^^

Hello, first of all if your child plays Dofus, don't let him play for hours as he will quickly become addicted, and with each of his logins when you are around, check how long he is subscribed because (he can subscribe in secret or as Ben Kang said, he can sell them to earn kamas). What my parents do is that they subscribe me for 1 year on each of my birthdays if I have more than 15 average (I am in 4th grade and in the last term I got 17). This can encourage your child to work but also to do at least 5 hours of sports per week and to let him hang out with friends more often so that he spends more time outside or occasionally go on outings like going to museums as it is educational, the zoo, or amusement parks. For my part, this keeps him away from the computer and Ankama is not responsible for these bills as it is clearly stated that one must subscribe with their parents. Thank you for your understanding.

I was also addicted to this game. I kept calling, and my phone bill climbed to 65 euros (40 euros for the premium rate numbers). This was about a year ago (I was in 8th grade and my grades were improving: 16.6, 15.8, 16.1). I decided that this game was trash, and I uninstalled it. Now that I’m without this game, my grades are good, and I was able to get my diploma with honors. This game takes over kids’ minds and pushes them to do anything for it. Parents, I advise you to remove this game from their devices, either by using a firewall or by using the Registry Editor (which is more reliable).

For your astronomical bills, I recommend you either contact a member of the ANKAMA team to clarify the issue and try to get a refund or to reach out to your ISP if it's due to a computer bug.

This game is just a pastime: it should only be played if all your tasks (such as homework and others) are done. Your kids must have understood that they can play this game anytime, regardless of whether they do their homework. In any case, your children are growing up; they're entering puberty, and they need to understand (through you) that games won’t always be in their lives, that they need to learn to do without them from an early age.

I hope I have helped you enough, and you can also speak to their main teacher about it.

@+, Marwan-93000

So know that you only pay when you subscribe to Dofus, otherwise no. You don't pay based on your connection time on Dofus, it's clear that if you just call, yes, your bill can reach astronomical heights, but otherwise installing this game or even playing it without being subscribed only costs us time.

There you go, have a good day.

Hello everyone,

I play this game a lot and I still do, regarding all these money problems, you shouldn't only look at Ankama but also at the surrounding sites.

When you know a bit about it, you can know that some sites sell in-game currency (the currency is called "Kamas" in Dofus), many of these sites are scams and I've already seen that you can buy 100 million Kamas (which is REALLY huge and appealing to all players ^^) for 700 euros in REAL money. You can check for yourself on Google (Kamas Dofus) and you'll see a mountain of these sites.
I've been playing this game for 4-5 years and I've never heard of this issue in the game and yet we hear a lot of Dofus problems... I was quite surprised to see a post like this. Knowing that nearly 5 million people subscribe to this game worldwide... I don't think Ankama would risk scamming its players (which would be a loss for them, loss of clients, subscriptions, etc...) and I think they are already rich enough x) their company was valued at nearly 10 million euros two years ago, taking the risk of scamming... I don't think so.

Honestly for me: -Either your son is subscribed to his friends and collects the money in cash
-Or he says he subscribes to his friends and it has nothing to do with it...
-Or it’s a scam from a Kamas selling site
-Or it’s indeed a line hacking
3

The sites selling "kamas" are illegal and anyway Dofus is a scam, it's a game meant to scam.

Hello, I’m like you would say hooked on this game. But on the school side, I do my work first, then I play. For all the parents who have a son/daughter who plays Dofus all the time without doing their work and the phone bill is huge, your child says 'I did nothing, it's not me.' Ask them to show you the game to see their subscription time and their kamas (in-game money). I mention kamas because they might sell audiotel codes to someone in the game for KAMAS. € vs k... I hope I have helped you afterwards.

Good evening Soso,

Since yesterday, I have the same problem as you with my 12-year-old son. An Orange bill of 350 euros (Doffus).

Have you found a solution to this scam?
Thank you.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I didn't get the response I was hoping for. FT, following my registered letter, is ignoring me (in short, they haven't replied at all).
I will follow up with them. However, I have blocked all calls starting with 08. I'm waiting to see the next bill.
And when did it start for you? Does your son confirm that it's not him, or (like in my case) are you receiving calls related to DOFUS on days when your child is not at home?
Keep me updated.
Thanks and see you soon

Hello Soso,

Baptiste (12 years old) used to play Dofus using a credit card. (no problem)
But his school results became insufficient, so we suspended the payments.
I have a cordless phone, easy to take to the bedroom.
In March, I have one call per week (normal), as one call = one week subscription.
But in April, I received an orange bill for 135 euros, about 72 calls to the following number 08.99.23.45.67
1/05, 2/05, 3/05, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and on the 20th (stop of the invoice by orange) with calls of 50 times in the same day.
I activated (cut off) the outgoing calls to special numbers, but billing is a month behind
So for the month of April, big surprise 218 calls to Dofus. Bill of 417 euros!!!!!!
Baptiste tells me: I made 3 calls in April and 2 calls in May.
Wednesday, July 2, I am going to an association for consumer protection.
I will give you updates, hopefully good ones.
His Dofus account is at 0 !!!!!!!!!!
SOS I WANT to understand, why have more than 200 codes, they are all expired after a week?????
Example from 16/05 calls: 15.03.57, 15.05.52, 15.08.23, 17.36.38, 17.48.15, 17.50.11, 18.59.35, 19.11.29, 19.13.28, 19.17.57, 19.20.19, 19.35.34, 19.37.27, 19.39.25, 19.41.19…..
Until 22.27.43

Hello Fanny,

I have been (at least I was) in the same situation as you with my kid. He assured me that he called the Dofus site (the same number as yours) just once and it wasn't even for him (apparently) but for a friend. I think that the code transmitted can be cracked by other unscrupulous users, but since the code is linked to the phone number... QED.
Maybe it's a simplistic reasoning, but in my opinion, it's totally plausible given the various Dofus-related websites I’ve visited.
You should also know that this phone number is listed as a "phone scam."
I look forward to hearing from you after your consumer meeting, and if you need any more testimonies, I'm ready to help.
Have a great day.

Hello, I'm 13 years old and I know the audio codes (yes, I paid €250 but out of my own pocket...) I recommend you do what I'm telling you because not only will your child have school problems but also psychological ones (I have a friend who does this, he's even completely paranoid because of this game). You need to block his access to this game that costs a lot and isn't 'interesting', it's just a scam. Furthermore, I've often been told that the support for this game is PAID, you should also block their access to the game with a firewall, parental control, and even with antivirus, and have them refund the bill.

Regarding parental controls, you shouldn't use the one from your internet service provider because there are passwords on it and it's very easy to find, plus you can set a password for his session.

Good evening,
I am 12 years old soon to be 13, and I also did like your son but on another game.
Creating a group to restrict calls from Ankama??!!
You can still do it, but it won't lead to anything.
Ankama is a very big company.
I stopped using audio codes; my parents had a big argument with me over that.
Why start again?

Orange: Bill over 80 euros ~95 I think

Hello parents

So after reading all your messages, I fully understand your distress regarding outrageous bills.
Unfortunately, for that, I don't know what to say because I'm 16 years old and my parents never wanted to buy me audiotel codes, and I don’t blame them; seeing the problems you're facing, I understand your situation well.

For the kids who are still in middle school with whom you have school problems, I have a solution for you because the one I’ve applied with my parents has worked very well so far.

First, I started playing Dofus around the middle of eighth grade (I’m now in tenth grade and will move up to eleventh without ever having to repeat a year), my parents immediately noticed that I was playing a lot of Dofus, so they didn’t stop me from playing, but one evening we set up a system so that I could play while keeping my grades around a 15 average.

The first rule was that I couldn’t play for more than an hour each evening while knowing that my homework had to be done first; I couldn’t access the computer at first because they locked the office door, but now that’s no longer necessary, I do my homework very well on my own.

The second thing is for you because I’ve always done sports (without that, I don’t know what I would do); enroll your child in a sports club. If they’ve never done anything before, starting with athletics is good because of the different options inside, he can see what he likes or can go elsewhere. Personally, I do sprinting at 1000m as well as high jump; I won’t tell you the third activity because it’s new for me and not easy. So doing sports will keep them occupied; if you have a husband who runs, he should take the son to run while pushing him to his limits; that’s what my dad did, and after 3 years, I still haven’t managed to beat him!!

The third and final thing is to get involved in your son’s schoolwork, check it, and follow through closely; if he really has issues, you can always contact the main teacher, especially for homework since I didn’t write them down in my agenda at the beginning—not all of them—so if necessary, make a contract and have a teacher follow up; I’ve already seen that in the middle school I attended.

With that, I leave you, hoping that what I’ve told you can help you and that the telephone bill problems get resolved.

So here it is, I think it must be possible and if so, it could be quite useful to you. First of all, I would recommend contacting Audiotel and asking them to provide you with (if possible) the few codes that were "supposedly" given on your phone line. Then contact Ankama Games and provide them with these codes so that they can, if they are able, trace the account that used them. If they trace the account, they will have all the details of the person using it.

Hello Jello,

I will indeed do what you suggest. Anyway, I have nothing to lose. Can I contact Audiotel by phone or rather online?

Have a great day and thank you for this lead

Hi

I know if your problem can't be solved, I did the same thing. Your son can hack your line from a computer. I'm a mod, to solve this problem we need to discuss it. Here is my MSN address: mini.manson@hotmail.fr
