Black cross battery issue mac

Hello, I have a MacBook and suddenly there is a cross on the battery symbol... it doesn't seem to want to charge anymore, I can only use it on mains power. Can you help me...?
Configuration: Mac OS X Firefox 3.0.8

My 13" MacBook Pro had a problem overnight... a black cross on the battery icon. This morning, I couldn't get it to work on battery (only on AC power). I just read your post and.... thank you! After the update (SMC reset), EVERYTHING IS BACK TO NORMAL.

Note: For beginners, the option key is the Alt key ;)

How many cycles does this battery have??

Has the SMC reset been done??

If not, start there, everything is explained here:

The battery is dead..... I have the same problem and asked the question at an MAC center.
