Hello,
I have video files (5 of about 1 GB each) pieces of a movie copied with DVD Shrink: how can I combine them into a single file for continuous playback?
Is there a way to copy a movie into a single file?

Hello Phedre,
DVD Shrink only deals with DVD-Video which is somewhat like retail DVDs.
So, you do not need to copy the VOB files as they are an integral part of the recorded movie structure. Basically, a DVD-Video consists of 2 folders: AUDIO_TS (empty, so not too important if absent) and VIDEO_TS (IFO, BUP, and VOB files).
For more information about the structure and content of a DVD-Video, see, for example:
- https://www.commentcamarche.net/contents/460-fichier-vob
- the beginning of this tip: http://forum.telecharger.01net.com/forum/high-tech/LOGICIELS/Video/tuto-edition-fichiers-sujet_227991_1.htm
Therefore, with DVD Shrink, if you want to keep everything, just click the "Backup!" button. However, I recommend creating an ISO Image that you will burn using the software Imgburn.
A few tutorials for this software, if needed:
- a simple one: http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet 5232 rip a dvd copy a video dvd
- a very good site (this is where I learned to use this software): http://www.trad-fr.com/htm/tutoriaux.htm
- another quite comprehensive one: http://www.tutoriel.org/tutoriaux/DVD-Shrink.htm
I recommend burning on a rewritable DV RW if you have one, to see if it works.
However, if you want to make a movie in an AVI container that is about 700 MB, you need to use other software like Dr DivX, M4NG, FairUse (read these recommendations), AutoGordianKnot for example.
Best regards

As your files have the same name followed by just a number at the end to differentiate them in the correct order, for example VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB, VTS_01_4.VOB, and VTS_01_5.VOB, they will be read one after the other.
With the VLC player, you can even put them in a playlist, if you want.
So you just need to select them all in the correct order, that's all.
It's a bit like having a movie divided into 5 parts. The movie is named for example "Toto on vacation," but since they take up a lot of space, it is cut into 5 parts: Toto on vacation_1, Toto on vacation_2, Toto on vacation_3, Toto on vacation_4, and Toto on vacation_5.
The reason is that a VOB file does not exceed, in principle, a size of 0.99 Go for a DVD-Video.
However, if you want to try it, there is software capable of merging VOB files to create a "huge" one, it's VOBMerge (I don't know it): http://www.tutoriels-animes.com/coller-assembler-fichiers-videos-vob.html
Now, it is possible to watch the entire movie as if it were a DVD (menu interactivity) either by using the ISO Image (created with DVD Shrink) and the VLC player, or by reading your movie from the IFO or BUP file with a player like NeroShowTime or the IFO file with MPC-HC for example. Perhaps this is also possible with other players, but I don't know them all.
See you!

Hello,
thank you very much for your ultra-fast response!
I have taken note, but I still have my assembly question: I successfully copied with DVD Shrink... but I ended up with 7.5 VOB files for a 4 GB movie: how can I combine them into a single file for continuous playback and burn them all at once????
Thank you
Phèdre-
Hello,
normally DVD Shrink does not provide you with the VOB files as they are; it places them itself in a folder named VIDEO_TS, and it is this folder that you need to burn as a "data DVD".
Don't worry if you haven't modified any of the files obtained after conversion or saving, your burning software will format your media directly as DVD-Video.

Thank you to lithium,
For the burning, it's understood, but since I also have the option to read my VOB files directly from my hard drive, how can I play them continuously when the movie is split into 5 files and I have to open them one by one???
Thank you for clarifying
