Unnecessary Windows background tasks.

Hello,

I have a problem. My PC always has a lot of background tasks that are using up a lot of resources.

I realized this because for some time now, despite having configured it to turn off the hard drive after 10 minutes of inactivity, it no longer does so, nor does it go into sleep mode. I feel like this is because there are too many background tasks running.

How can we determine which tasks are truly essential to run on a PC? To obviously get rid of the others.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hi,

You know the names of the programs you have installed... For example, I downloaded and installed a program > MSN Picture Displayer
I don't need it to start up, so I disable it under the "Startup" tab in MsConfig, because I can launch the application if needed, from "All programs" or via a shortcut...

Disabling does not uninstall the program! It just prevents it from launching every time you log in...

You will recognize the things you know, that you installed yourself, and you can disable them if you want. For example, I have Firefox... I leave the box checked, since I use Firefox and I want it to launch at startup, but not necessarily "Windows Live Messenger" since I hardly use it, so I disable Messenger.

And remember that you can always reverse the changes you've made... Just restart > Run > type MsConfig and recheck the boxes in front of the processes...

For some names, it's a bit more complicated, so here are a few with descriptions and what you can do: disable them, remove them, or definitely keep them (you may not have all of them, these are just indications...)

jusched.exe "Java Update Scheduler"

--> This process corresponds to the Java client update program from Sun MicroSystems. This process can be stopped.

hpsysdrv.exe

--> This process appears as a result of a complete restoration of an HP computer done with the tools provided at purchase. It checks that this restoration has been successful and records various information if a problem occurs. This information is only readable by engineers.... Definitely stop it, especially if the computer is no longer under warranty.

nwiz.exe /installquiet /keepquiet/ nodetect

--> Associated with the latest versions of nVidia graphics card drivers. Greatly improves the Desktop layout by adjusting preferences and optimizing it. Not necessary for system operation. Start manually if needed.

agrsmmsg.exe "SoftModem Assistant"

--> It allows Windows to communicate with a SoftModem, keep it if it's your modem.

iTunesHelper.exe "Apple iTunes"

--> Process related to iPod. Speeds up loading when the iPod is connected. Not essential at startup.

alcxmntr.exe "Realtek Monitor"

--> This is a spyware program installed with the AC97 drivers from RealTek that collects information. Disable and remove it!

lsburnwatcher.exe "LightScribe Watcher"

--> Used for LightScribe type burning. Can start manually when launching the application.

WkUFind.exe

--> Non-essential process of Microsoft Picture-It. For automatic program updates.

qttask.exe

--> Automatic startup of QuickTime. Remove it!

realshed.exe

--> Automatic startup of Real Player. Remove it!

dumprep 0 -k

--> The dumprep process is a generic Windows 2000/XP/2003 process aimed at creating memory dump reports in case of software error (bug). It can be stopped.

kbd.exe "Logitech"

--> This process allows you to configure multimedia keys on a Logitech keyboard. If you don't use them, remove it; otherwise, leave it.

ctfmon.exe

--> Generic process of Windows NT/2000/XP that manages alternative text input methods such as voice recognition software, handwriting recognition software, braille keyboards, etc. If you don't use it, remove it.

pchbutton.exe

--> Particularity of HP computers regarding technical support. Not essential!

Google Toolbar

--> Google Toolbar, if you use it keep it; otherwise, remove it.

wkcalrem.exe "Microsoft Works Calendar Reminder"

--> Installed with Microsoft Works Suite. A process that organizes your schedule in a calendar and warns you when a task needs to be performed. If not necessary, remove it.

The two Adobe...

--> Remove them, they are not necessary for the computer startup.

Good evening,

A program keeps coming back every time I remove it, it's ctfmon.exe. How is that possible?

Thank you.
