Restore an mbf file in Money 2005

Solved/Closed

Hello!
Windows XP completely crashed. So I reinstalled everything and formatted the hard drive.
I previously had Money 2005 and I had made a backup of my account on a floppy disk.
Now, although I have reinstalled the trial version of Money 2005, I can't seem to recover that backup, even if I copy it to the hard drive first. Apparently, Money is looking for a file with the .mny extension and the backup is in .mbf
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks

Hello, I have good news for all Money users (the seasoned ones but especially the not-at-all seasoned ones like me who want to restore a Money file but couldn’t do it, you will “finally” be able to do it.
Of course, until now, it was impossible to restore my file and also, there was no way to update it. The advice from other users wasn't working for me. I consulted other web pages and found an address from Microsoft where you can simply download the update and oh miracle after the update, my restoration is finally accepted.
To summarize:
Open Money and create a file with a different name than our backup
Go to this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/fr-fr/confirmation.aspx?FamilyID=60352051-f614-4aef-9ce3-36370a329c09
Download the update (run it manually)
Run the update
Close Money and then reopen it
Click on File, restore a backup and restore your backup.....
Miracle it works !!
Good luck to everyone

I confirm. It works.
Little advice to everyone: save the file to your hard drive just in case Microsoft decides to remove it one day).
In any case, thank you!

Hello,

I had the same problem after formatting my hard drive and reinstalling my PC.
I found the solution to restore my Money 2005 backup.
I reinstalled Money 2005, opened a new dummy account at the first launch of Money, updated Money 2005, closed Money, and then reopened it, searched for my backup file, and it worked.

Good luck to you.

Good evening, yes I managed to restore my Money 2005 backup on Windows Vista. I confirm it's working perfectly but it was a real obstacle course. You just need to know the few steps: run Money with a right-click in the Money programs and execute as administrator, then let the update happen (click tools update now). Create a neutral file from the output of that.
Restart Money, then go to file restore a backup file, don’t forget to indicate the new backup path and voila, it's magical, you find your account.
For more details, feel free to send me an email.
Thanks to whom it may concern, JOËL @ PLUS LA COM.

Well, yes, I completely understand the satisfaction when you find your personal accounts restored. As you said, it's all stupid, but the solution just needs to be applied in the right order, and above all, find the information online.
See you later and good luck lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you very much zen I finally managed to recover my backup file, but I didn't have a code for the administrator account that I had to create, otherwise it wouldn't work.
I had uninstalled and reinstalled money because the forecast graph was no longer displaying, but after restoring the backup, the problem is still there; but I am quite relieved to find my accounts again.
if you have any idea for the graph, I'm all ears!! sissou

Hello Sissou

Go to Tools, Settings, and Program Settings in the displays; you should find the solution. One thing is for sure, it's simply the configuration of Money that needs to be adjusted according to your preferences.
See you later

Best regards, Joel

Well, thank you! It's been a month that I've been struggling with this story cursing Vista, money, Microsoft, and the whole gang. On top of that, I'm my mother's guardian and have to account for every penny to the guardianship judge, I was really on edge! What a joy to finally have something that works. I'm going to celebrate with a little punch right away.
You are my savior who has set my neurons back in order. Thanks again. Goodbye, buddy.

Hello,

After a few hours of struggling to restore an "mbf" file, I'm telling you, it seems that boutarel is right: no more .mbf, but .mny backups: it works every time!

Good luck!

Good evening,

I am using Money 2004 and I had no problem retrieving my backup from the floppy disk when I installed a new hard drive and completely reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 and all my programs.

Could it be because you have a trial version that your backup cannot be performed?

If you are clean, you can contact Microsoft Money technical support.
When I had a problem accessing my Money in March 2004, the Microsoft service I contacted by email first offered me solutions by email and then called me (Mr. Maman from Emeat) for nearly 2 hours to resolve this issue.

Best regards,
Cochise

I read on a forum that you should first update the software. Then you open your file.
From what I understand, the problem comes from that damn... money that regularly updates itself online. So the original version of your CD is necessarily different from the one on your computer!
Several users have tried successfully. That's all I wish for you!

As for me, when I type my code that damn... money doesn’t recognize it. If anyone has any information, I'm all ears...

Hello everyone, I have the Money 2005 Standard version and I can't open my backup file, is it due to the mbf or mny extension? Or maybe it's a different update, how can I find out which update was used for my backup? I reinstalled Money with an update but no result.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this matter as I'm a bit lost.

I found a few addresses:

- impossible to open my money file

You should find what you're looking for...

PS: As for me, the file opens but Money does not recognize my password... if anyone has the info, I'm interested!

Hello,
I’m using Money 2004 and I’ve already restored backups without any issues (yes, Windows crashes regularly). But this time it’s asking me for my PassPort username and password, even though I don’t use the internet for Money. I’ve entered my MSN credentials which should suffice according to the support site, but the final message from Money is that it doesn’t match, and the restoration stops while incrementing an additional empty .mbf file.

You mentioned updates, are there any for 2004?

Thank you and good luck to those who will have many hours of catch-up entries, provided they have kept records. The computer as it is is not ready to replace paper, even though it is more convenient for balances.

From Snouk to Boutarel:

To update, go to the sites I've indicated... Your problem is known and resolved, you just need to check the FAQs.

As for my password issue, I finally found a *.mny file that I had saved, and this time Money accepted it. So that's sorted out, but I won't have the answer to this bug...

Hello and thank you for your responses.
Before posting, I always check the FAQs and numerous other posts, but it hasn't helped me.
I have tried several times, in different ways, to update, but during the restoration, there is always this request for *@hotmail.com and password (access to PassPort which I have never used) that are refused for supposedly being incorrect (I use it on MSN). Even worse, Money 2005 asks for it for a *.mny file (created with Money 2004) while it opens normally with Money 2004.
So, I revert to Money 2004, my file saved two months ago, and I will take advantage of the weekend to catch up on two months of accounts.
So, in the future, I will no longer make *.mbf backups but regular copies of the *.mny files.

Once again, thank you and good luck.
And long live forums and those who give their time to help others.

I found the answer on another site, but I'm posting the solution here anyway, in case it helps someone. You need to force the update of Money by executing the command: msmoney.exe -s (Start/Run) Money updates, then by double-clicking on your money.mny file, it opens correctly.

Hello,

Thanks for the tip, but I had tried it without success, using Money 2004. I had seen quite a few forums, some suggested trying an upgrade to 2005 to resolve the issue but that didn’t work either.

My solution is different: I've always been wary of computers (it's all virtual, and you can lose years of work in seconds, without knowing why and with no possibility of recovery) and of Microsoft, which can do "a lot of things" but also has bugs. So I no longer make *.mbf files but instead create regular backups of my *.mny accounts on another medium, and in case of issues, I just do the reverse operation, without worries, quickly. That’s what I did when facing the problem that prompted this message, and I only had "one" month of accounts to catch up on (over five years, that's not bad).
I don't use "passport" because my accounting isn't secret, but I don't need it and I think we're already tracked from all sides on the internet without risking exposing the details. I might be a bit "paranoid." But I don't want to make it easy for leeches.

In short, I’ve abandoned *.mbf files; making a backup of *.mny is simple and more reliable.

Have a good day everyone and good luck...

Hello, I had the same problem as many of you when trying to restore MONEY 2005, and I followed the advice of alflt, message from Saturday, September 8, 2007, which consists of updating the internet when Money prompts you to do so when you open the first account, and then restoring your "sauvegarde0.mbf" that you have on your CD, and it's done. Thank you very much to the participants of this forum because I spent hours trying to restore it in every possible way without success. SO GREAT!

Hello

I hope I'm not off-topic: here's my problem, when I download my statements on Money, I can't open them because Money indicates that the data is corrupted... and this has been happening since I've been using Vista.
Can someone help me?
Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I solved the problem.
After installing Money 2005, you need to create a dummy account. Money will then update itself.
Be careful, to make the update work, you must run Money as an administrator.

Once the update is done, you can open your backup :)

Yes, as an administrator, but it's asking me for a password, and I don't know where to find it...
