Budget Management in MS-Money 2005

In the earliest versions of Money (97...), it was possible to display the monthly/annual budget balance by showing expenses and revenues by subcategory AND the total for each category, next to the budget and the variance from it.

In Money 2005, it is impossible to display totals by CATEGORY: the total next to the category name shows 0.00 if all entries have been assigned to a subcategory. The total is only different from 0.00 if an expense or revenue has not been assigned to any subcategory.

Does anyone know how to force Money 2005 to display the totals of the subcategories for each category of expenses and revenues, as well as the balance (positive or negative) by category (and not by subcategory)?

    Have you tried doing this from the States tab located in the toolbar? where there are several options available
    Expenses by category
    Expenses by third parties
    etc....

    Thank you to jmarion3 for the response. Yes, of course I have thoroughly explored the States tab. Two sections concern my question and neither allows for the comparative display of a monthly or annual total by CATEGORY and the monthly or annual variance against the budget for each category:

    1. The "Monthly Income and Expenses" section perfectly shows the totals by sub-category AND the total by category. But it does not compare them with the budget.

    2. The "Annual Budget" section does present a "Actual / Budgeted" confrontation and the positive or negative "Variance" observed in three columns, but only by SUB-CATEGORY. The category lines display 0.00 as they only account for "All Others" expenses and income, i.e. those that have not been assigned to any sub-category.

    So if I want to obtain a summary indicating the "variance" observed between the actual and the budget by CATEGORY, I have to calculate it by hand: quite ironic for accounting software, isn’t it? !!!

    I don't have the answer to your deduction, and if you didn't find the solution in the link I sent you earlier: it means that, unless I'm mistaken, it's not possible for this software, which, despite its advanced age (and having been abandoned for about 10 years), is still very popular among many users.
    My conclusion is that MsMoney has many qualities still, but perhaps its only flaw is that it no longer has support >> There are other more recent accounting software options, but I'm not sure they do what you want and are especially compatible with MsMoney.

    Thank you again to jmarion for the time spent trying to solve my little problem. I will therefore take out my calculator to get the differences for each category compared to the budget while waiting for the miracle solution.

    Hello,

    I have been using Money for about twelve years. I haven't found anything better, paid or free, on the Internet. I started with Money 97. And when I switched to Windows 7, I temporarily installed a virtual machine running XP to continue using M97. Then I discovered that Money 2005 was available for free download and I switched my accounts to 2005.
    But I find it less flexible than 97, especially since features like internet links for Payments, Projects, Taxes, etc. no longer work since Microsoft discontinued this product.
    Another example of a regression from 2005 compared to 97: the inability to modify income entries in the budget, except by "adding a credit." And the inability to display the details of these entries!!!

    The GesFine software performs what you are looking for, namely the comparison of a pre-established forecast budget with the actual results.

      Can you confirm that the software you mentioned is compatible with MsMoney backups >> This means that this software needs to be installed and the backup made previously on MsMoney has to be retrieved, and I have serious doubts about that ?? Because if the person in question has been using MsMoney for 12 years, this means that their backup contains all the information (from 12 years of use) of MsMoney, and I am not at all sure that Gesfine can handle that >> If so, please explain how

      No, GesFine does not directly exploit MsMoney backups; data transfer must be done account by account via Qif format exports, and the number of years to transfer is not an issue in itself.
      My comment was regarding the software's ability to compare projections with actual results, comparing by category, subcategory, or by month in the form of a table or graph.

      You answered my question >> Gestfine is not compatible with MsMoney and so in the case of our friend above, this software will be of no use to him unless he installs gGestfine and "tackles" his 12 years of accounting: which is impossible unless he abandons MsMoney and starts over using Gestfine, but I don't think someone who has been using MsMoney for many years would take the risk of installing another software incompatible with what has been used for a very long time
      MsMoney is an old software, no longer supported by Microsoft but still very popular among many users >> I am not criticizing Gestfine at all, but it is obvious that it can be used by a new user of accounting software who has not used MsMoney for X time

      If compatible means "cannot read mny files", I agree, but what other software besides Money writes to the data file?
      As long as the data is transferable, compatibility (in terms of data preservation) is ensured, which is the case for most software capable of importing transactions in qif format.
