Unreadable .avi video sequence

Solved

Hello,
I recorded a video sequence with a Sony DSC-S650 digital camera. The type of memory card used is a "Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo High Speed Magic Gate," with the logo being an M underlined three times.
I used a cable from another digital camera to save this sequence to my computer.
The problem is:
the sequence cannot be played on my computer; I tried with VLC, Real, QuickTime, but nothing worked.
However, it plays on the digital camera.

Is there anyone who knows what the issue might be?
Could it be that the memory card is defective?
Or is it because the cable is originally for a BENQ digital camera, even if it has the same shape?
Or could it be an issue with the camera itself?

I really need this sequence. Is there anything that can help me???
Thank you.

Hi, this is probably a codec issue. Are you sure you have everything you need on your computer?

I don't know, but usually other sequences and films can be played, even those that I can't read with Real or Media Player; VLC plays them.
      I don't understand what it's about.

Well, it is true that VLC already includes a good number of codecs for playback. Maybe your input file has too exotic a format? In that case, you'll need to perform a conversion of that file. Transfer it to your machine and let me know the extension (.avi, .mpg, .mp4, etc...), I'll be around for now.

      It's .avi

Okay, this is what's called the container, now the codec used should not be recognized by your reading software, so you'll need to convert it with this for example:

      Hello
I tried to open my sequence with the software you gave me
      It shows me
a first error message "Incorrect header"
and then a second error message stating that it could not open this file

      What should I do?

Install it to start, then open it and locate the file on the hard drive.

This means that your file is corrupted, so indeed, any editing/conversion software will refuse to open it, and I don't see any other solution than to redo it. There used to be a program capable of repairing this "header": AviFix, but I've checked, it has become unavailable; otherwise, there is surely an equivalent somewhere, search for it there, for example:

I found the software you told me about, I downloaded and then installed it.
I tried to open my sequence with it,
but all the buttons are disabled and in the label file format is written unknown.
      What should I do??
Here is the link from which I downloaded this software

Thank you for the link, I just downloaded it too.

Strange, I have the feeling that there are two of you, am I wrong?

    Well, let's move on...

Now you need to download another software: media info

    https://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/codecs/fiches/32084.html

Excellent soft that will allow you to get all the information about your file, just right-click on it and there you go.
Let me know what it tells you...

No, to get ALL the info, right-click on the file/mediainfo...

actually, your instructions are missing the codec used, the number of frames/second, etc...

Sure, here's the translation: Ok, we have what we need

Well, your video seems to be encoded in DV, which is the format suited for digital cameras. You're indeed missing some codecs: avi DV, Mjpeg and I don't think VLC has included them. So you'll need to download and install an additional codec pack: AceMegaCodecsPack, it's the most comprehensive, unfortunately I can't provide you with a link as I can't find it.

    Hello,

In the installation options, you need to install ALL the codecs first, the antivirus module is unnecessary as well as the player. Once that's done, reopen your video file with a standard player and let me know how it goes. Oh, I almost forgot, also uncheck (in the installation options) the file associations.

The players used always tell you the same thing? In this case, unfortunately, I fear that your file may be permanently lost.

      Hello Rhovaonous
thank you for all the time you dedicated to help me
      thank you for everything
indeed, I asked a photo lab near my home and I asked them to store the sequence on a removable disk and now it is readable by any player
I think the problem was with the cable
      thank you
