convert MKV to AVI Solved/Closed

Question

hi everyone
I would like to convert a video from mkv format to avi format.
I found plenty of solutions but none match the movie I have.
the video encoding is: v-real/rv40
the audio encoding is: a-ac3
for example, virtualdubmode recognizes a-ac3 well but not rv40

Regarding the conversion of MKV files (matriochka or matroska):

The only free software that successfully fulfills the task is: Mediacoder

For my part, neither SUPER, nor Riam, nor any conversion software was able to do it, but mediacoder converts them without any issues!

Hi,
the mkv is not strictly speaking a codec, it's a container that can hold the video, several audio streams, and subtitles.
In your case, for the video, the codec is realvideo. So to convert to avi, you need a realvideo->avi converter.
Personally, I don't know if that exists.

If your problem is basically that you cannot play your file, I recommend installing the right codecs and using Media Player Classic (which looks like the old Windows Media Player but is nothing like it...) or VLC (which has the particularity of being able to play a video even without codecs!) that manages mkv.

Guide:

Install all codecs.
Start VirtualdubMod

Demultiplex / Separate video, audio and subtitles and convert audio to mp3

1. Open the .mkv or .ogm file, File->Open video files
2. Choose Streams->Stream list
3, 4. Right-click on the audio track you want, select Full-Processing
5. Right-click on the audio track and select Compression

1. Choose Lame MP3
2. Select bitrate

1. Select the audio track you want
2. Click on Save WAV to convert it to wav, save it as track2.wav
3. Select the subtitle track if necessary
4. Click Demux to save as video.srt/sub

1. Select File->Save as to save the avi in a file, the video will not be reconverted
2. Select Direct Stream Processing
3. Select avi and save the new video track1.avi

Multiplex/Join audio and video

1. Open track1.avi, File->Open video file
2. Select Streams->Stream List
3. Add the wav audio

1. Select File->Save as to save the avi and the wav, they will not be reconverted
2. Select Direct Stream Processing
3. Select avi and save the new video.avi

You can delete track1.avi and track2.wav

Hello everyone.

My humble contribution: This software is simple, but as a result, it only works in simple cases. The Mkv format is not actually a specific encoding like Divx or Mpeg4, but a container that can hold the movie, encoded in any format, subtitles in several languages, and multiple audio tracks in several languages as well. ANAISALAIN is probably in this case. And there, you need to use more advanced tools that allow you to demux the mkv to keep only the audio and video tracks of your choice. Then, SUPER will be able to process it.
These tools are available in a package called Ripp-it-am (open-source software distributed at www.ripp-it.com). It’s a universal converter that provides access to several hundred audio and video parameters for each codec. So, it's not for video newbies. But there’s also a forum with a post that discusses the topic. It's not easy, but by following the tutorials, you can succeed.

Be careful, you need available space on your hard drive, at least equivalent to that of your DVD, because we are going to create the same DVD but with only one language.

The structure of a DVD file is as follows:
A folder with the NAME of the movie. Inside, there are 2 folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (it's not important if the latter is absent as it is empty).
In the VIDEO_TS folder, you should have IFO, BUP, and VOB files. For more information, see here.
If DVD Shrink refuses to open your VIDEO_TS folder, it is either that the DVD format is special, or that the DVD is protected, which I don't think is the case as you used it to convert to MP4.
Or maybe your file is not a DVD-Video. If that's the case, tell me what format the file you want to convert is.

I also tried to convert to MP4 format, compatible with iPod, from a DVD that has two audio tracks, and the conversion only takes into account the first track. So, you absolutely need to try to have only one audio track on a VOB file.

If you can't recreate a DVD-Video with DVD Shrink that has only the audio track you want in French, we will try with another software.
Try to do the same thing as DVD Shrink, but with this software DVDFab HD Decrypter. You choose the audio track, in French, that you want to extract by clicking on Main Movie.

If you still can't get VOB files with only one audio track with this software, I don’t know how you can do it.
On the other hand, if you succeed, then you can convert to MP4 for iPod with French as the language.

Try using GSpot or MediaInfo or AVICodec to find out the codecs of your file.

What I want to know is what comes after the file name. For example: VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB (there are others) for a DVD-Video or movie, mp4 for an MP4 or movie, mov for a QuickTime file, or even FILM.avi for a DivX/XviD.
You tell me it’s a file, but to me, that doesn’t mean anything.

Have you tried with the software DVDFab HD Decrypter?

I forgot to ask you: are you using Windows XP, Vista, or another operating system?

This is the first time I see this.
I don’t know what to tell you about this type of "files".
So I won't be able to help you any further because this is unknown to me. I don't know. Sorry.
Furthermore, aside from the solution that works and that I gave you, I don't see how else to change the audio track.

I did, however, create a DVD-Video from an MPEG file that has two audio tracks (English and French) using Nero. The problem is that at the end of this conversion, the DVD only has one audio track (the first one). So the solution of making a DVD-Video with your original file doesn’t seem to work.
