perso.xls is locked for editing

Question

Hi...
I placed a personal macro in perso.xls with a button on my toolbar so that I can perform certain tasks.

Now, when I open an Excel document located on my network, Excel shows me a dialog box saying that "Perso.xls is locked for editing by stf" and I have the choice between "Read-Only", "Notify", or "Cancel".

The document I'm trying to open has nothing to do with the certain tasks mentioned above, and even less with my personal macro.

If I click on one of the three buttons above, I can open the desired document.

My questions are simple:

Why does Excel give me this alert?
How can I fix it while keeping my macro in perso.xls?

You simply need to set the properties of the file perso.xls to read-only to no longer receive this message. If you need to modify perso.xls (which normally doesn't happen every day!), uncheck this option in the file properties while making the modification.

The steps to follow are to go to the directory of perso.xls, in the context menu, select properties, and then check Read-Only.

Macros are like small programs. You created one to perform certain tasks. However, some individuals with ill intentions insert harmful macros into Word or Excel documents.
It's normal and good that Excel informs you that one or more are present in the document.
It’s up to you to determine whether the macros present are dangerous.
Warning: If a document containing macros is not trustworthy, you should, if possible, avoid opening it or disable the macros.

Hello, I'm encountering the same problem as stf.

Unfortunately, I think Manu is mistaken and that this is not a security alert from Office.

For your information, I am using Excel 2000, I have also created a macro, and when I open Excel, there are no error messages, but when I open a second Excel workbook, I get the message in question...

So I have the same questions as stf:

Why does Excel give me this alert?
How can I resolve it while keeping my macro in perso.xls

I continued searching and found an alternative solution that doesn't really address the questions raised above but avoids the Excel error message.

Here’s how to do it:

I open Excel, export my macros as .bas files using Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11 in Excel)
I delete the Perso.xls file from the disk.
I reopen Excel, create a dummy macro (note: not saved in the personal macro workbook but in this workbook)
Then, I import the macros saved in step 1 and save the Excel file as a template under the name Classeur.xlt and in the same directory where perso.xls was located.

As a result, no more error messages. The only drawback when creating new macros is that you have to export them to reimport them into this template.

Check if the file containing your macro allows read-write access on your network. This is especially true if the media (hard disk) is in NTFS, Samba. Pierre
