Delete files in C:\$Recycle.Bin Solved

Question

Hello everyone,

I just saw thanks to the antivirus that I have lots of files still in the "$recycle bin" but I have nothing left in the regular recycle bin. How do we access these files and delete them?

Good evening,

I will explain to you step by step how I proceeded.

So first, go to My Computer then to your C:\ drive.
Press "alt" and a menu should appear at the top of the page. Go to the Tools tab then Folder Options (at the bottom).

Next, go to the second tab at the top "View".

In the list, check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

Then click ok.

The file "$Recycle.Bin" should appear at the top.

Open it and delete what you want to delete.

Then redo the steps in reverse to hide the hidden files again....

The cleaning did the computer good, but it didn't find the files. In fact, I configured the display thanks to a tutorial that helped me find the famous hidden file $Recycle.Bin in C:\ and I deleted everything!

All the answers found on the forums did not help me solve my problem, which was accessing the files contained in "$Recycle.bin". The fact that I activated hidden files, etc., didn't help me either.  I had identified, with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, a bunch of files that were being checked by the software each time I ran a scan, which extended the duration of the scan and cluttered my recycle bin without me being able to access it.  I found a simple and effective way under Windows 7 to access the famous $Recycle.bin using WinRAR x 64 3.93.  You need to open WinRAR from the Start menu and navigate in WinRAR by going up the directory tree, and there, miracle, you eventually stumble upon $Recycle.bin and realize that you can access the contents. You point to the file like "$RQ0IV066" (this is an example), and you press the "delete" key.  Be careful what you delete because it is impossible to recover them since you are emptying a part of the recycle bin, unless you copy (ctrl + c) and then paste it in another location and only then delete it permanently from "$Recycle.bin".   I was able to clear out the troublesome files from the recycle bin and thanks to this trick gained 2 gigabytes. Maybe other versions of WinRAR also work.  Easy, right?

My problem is solved (on Vista).

I first tried the first method (show hidden folders and not hiding, etc...). $recycle.bin was appearing just fine but the files to delete were not.

However, with the WinRar method from Toftof, I was able to see the 2 folders in question along with the files that McAfee highlighted during the antivirus scan, and I deleted them (and freed up 1GB).
