UMD reader PSP broken

Hello,
I bought my PSP last August. One day, out of carelessness, I dropped it on the ground, and since that day my UMD drive hasn’t worked anymore. My PSP displays the following message when I insert a disc after about 1 minute: "Unable to read the disc." It tries to read the disc for a minute or so and you can hear the noise, but then it stops and displays the message. I would like to know if this is repairable or under warranty? I went to Fnac and they told me it would be a flat rate of €200 for customer service at Sony, so I would prefer it to be covered by the warranty, otherwise, I might as well buy another one. The seller was unable to tell me if this kind of problem was under warranty.

    Hi,

    It's you who broke it, so it's not guaranteed in my opinion.

      Alright, but I won't tell them if I bring it in under warranty, of course, that it fell on the floor.

      There is a good chance that it is just the module that moves the lens that has not been put back in place.
      If the warranty doesn't work, try this: 1. When you open the UMD reader with the screen facing you, locate the lens (it's not difficult, it looks like a small magnifying glass about 2-3 mm).
      2. It is fixed on a module that moves on a worm screw; gently, with a small (fairly rigid) tool, you need to push the small cart all the way to the right and hear a "click"; which means it has been put back in place.
      What happens after a shock is that the module no longer starts reading at the beginning of the UMD and the console does not have the necessary information to start the game.

      With the PSP, you can do everything...

      Ok, thank you for this information because I looked at my player, but I'm hesitant to touch it too much because I'm afraid of breaking something. I took my PSP to the customer service of FNAC where I bought it, and they accepted it under warranty, so now I just have to wait a month.

      A big thank you to mad569. For over a year, my older son's PSP (turning 10 tomorrow) hasn't been working. This morning, I felt like looking at it again, because when it happened about a year ago, I had already tried to fix it but couldn't solve the problem! Anyway, this morning I checked your post and did what you said, put the carriage back in the right place because I knew the little one (my other child, 4 years old) wanted to play with it, and it stopped working afterwards, so I thought he must have dropped it despite what he said. Additionally, I cleaned the lens, but it took me several tries before finding the right spot. Anyway, all this to say "miracle, it works again!" Since it's his birthday tomorrow, I bought him the last DS he wanted.
      It will be for the little killer. LOL. Thanks again to mad569, too bad you didn't post earlier LOL.

      Hello everyone; I read quite a bit of your comments and my case of "broken UMD reader" is similar but different. Indeed, as soon as I turn on this f***ing PSP to start a game, the startup where it says in white "PSP PlayStation Portable", my screen freezes, and no button responds. THANK YOU for helping me find a solution as quickly as possible please!!

    When the UMD doesn't work, it isn't always the UMD that's the problem, but rather the white switch that provides information about the presence of the UMD. However, this switch is soldered onto the motherboard.

      WHAT YOU'RE SUGGESTING regarding the switch on the motherboard of the PSP seems interesting to me.
      The UMD drive of my PSP is no longer detected by the PSP. I feel like it is no longer powered.
      Do you have a photo of the location of this switch?

      I was 14-15 years old when I cracked my PSP and I don't think I'm a boss. Cracking is just easy, I even did it for money... it's so simple. So, for the Switch, I think that's it because I have the same problem and the lens works perfectly since the game runs but with stutters.

    Well, I actually have the same problem; it's all the UMDs that no longer work, or is there just one that still works? If that's the case, while waiting for someone to respond, play the game that still works. That's what I'm doing.

    Hello everyone, I have practically the same problem as some people after a fall, of course accidental. When I start the PSP, even if the UMD slot is open, it tries to read while making a funny noise like shtok shtok repeatedly and quite fast. Then it gives me the message impossible to blah blah blah, and as if that weren't enough, it freezes and upon restarting, it gets stuck on the wallpaper with the little waves moving. I've even removed the battery and restarted it, but it only restarts after a certain amount of time.

    If anyone has any idea, I'm all ears. I've tried the reset and the fix with the cart to reattach it in its click to the right, and that's it. Thank you all in advance.

    P.S. Help, this is for my little brother...

    In this case, I think it's guaranteed since the breakdown would have happened by itself.

    Good evening, it's very different for me, my brother shot at the UMD and at the same time caught the small metal piece where the UMD is placed (PSP Slim and Lite). I would like to know which piece it is located in, hidden behind the back cover?? It's very urgent, I'm leaving for vacation soon and I would like to take it with me. I'm quite resourceful but I can't see it, I think it's what triggers the reading of a UMD.

    this little piece is clipped onto the umd door but to put it back in place you'll need to disassemble your psp
    because there is a guide that keeps it in place but does not interfere with reading it will eject the umd a+.

      Oh okay, in that case, I'm not competent enough to help you, but there must be a big problem if nothing happens when you insert a UMD. However, you can try mad569's method if your PSP is no longer under warranty.

        Yes, I’ve already tried, but it doesn’t work. I think the problem comes from the lens or maybe the UMD drive has completely failed. I’m going to try Ali’s method.

    I'm like you, except mine didn't fall; it just stayed humid for 2 days, and when I got it back, it no longer detected the disk. I put it in the drying area under my dorm blanket, but still no luck. Then when I got home, I tried using a hair dryer, and it still didn't work. I even tried alcohol, and it didn't work either. Please help me? =(

    maximedu6 your PSP must be dead if it fell from the 2nd floor. (little description to know who I am hem hem: to speak German, you have to vomit, you vomit vomit I told you)
