Multimedia hard drive and MKV

Hello,

I want to buy a multimedia hard drive with HDMI.
The movies I have on my computer are all in MKV format, but I find it difficult to find a multimedia hard drive that can play this type of file for under €250!

I find some, but without a hard drive! How does that work, then? Do you have to buy another hard drive and connect it to the multimedia one? Is it reliable?

What I need is a HD multimedia hard drive with a hard drive that can read MKV files, without leaving me exposed for 3 years!

Any solutions?

Thank you for your response.

Best regards,

TS
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

IF IT CAN HELP SOMEONE ....

Hi, I use "tsMuxeR_1.10.6" which is free and simple to watch HD movies on PS3 because I haven't found any other solution to play large HD MKV FILES!

I split the file of "6 GB for example" into 2 of 3 GB using this utility
It gives me after 4 minutes (very fast), 2 files that I put on an 8GB USB stick "in FAT 32 OF COURSE" then I play them on the PS3 and it works great with DTS SOUND FORMAT or D DIGITAL AND WITHOUT LOSS OF QUALITY.

FOR THE tsMuxeR_1.10.6 UTILITY
OPEN IT AFTER INSTALLATION....
1ST TAB "INPUT" .... click ON ADD and choose your movie.. "ex 2012frBDRIP"
then go to this tab, click on Browse and give a name to your converted movie "ex2012BDRIP2" and save.
then go to the "SPLIT AND CUT" tab, click on split by size and replace 1.000 with "3" "I believe that it splits the movie every 3 GB" then click on startmuxing at the bottom and that's it lollllllllllllllll (THERE MAY BE OTHER THINGS TO DISCOVER IN THIS UTILITY ... SUBTITLES AND OTHERS BUT I DID THIS AND IT WORKS GREAT FOR ME)

I hope this can help someone !! because I struggled to find this!!

See you later ALL

Does it also play 3D MKV files?

The problem with some players is that DTS sound only works with the optical output.
This is the case with several players from the PEEKTON brand.
Maybe a lead?

And boo surprise, it doesn't work!!

same for me the lacie full hd is a big piece of junk!
it's in fat32 format
so we can't transfer files larger than 4 gigabytes and 1080 files are on average 8 gigabytes!!!! :o(

Hi,
I was just planning to get a Lacie HD to play all my 1080p MKV files without any issues!
Are you saying that it's impossible to play MKVs with this device?
Have you tried formatting the disk in NTFS (and not FAT32)?

Hello everyone,

It's very hard to find a multimedia external hard drive that supports the MKV format, which is often used for HD and Blu-ray movies. Most of them are over 350 euros, or you have to use a box that reads your hard drive... Meh

I found a nice little 1TB hard drive that isn't too expensive (accessible) at 229 euros on the manufacturer's website, the Iomega Screenplay Pro HD.
It's 279 euros at Carrefour, here are the links:

To be seen.....

Hello,

just a heads up: I’ve had the Iomega Screenplay Pro HD for 15 days, and contrary to what the manufacturer suggests, mkv files are not supported by the HDD.
Or, if they are, it would require a workaround that I haven't figured out yet (we don't know everything, after all...)

Hello Franck,
I'm in the same situation as you, I have an Iomega ScreenPlay HD multimedia drive and the manual states that it plays all formats (including mkv) but nothing. For .avi it's fine but for .mkv it tells me it's an invalid file.
Did you find anything?
Thanks in advance.

Buy the Peekbox 50HD 500GB for 102 euros at C-Discount and your problem is solved.

Hello,
There are quite a few nice media boxes here (compatible with MKV and even Blu-ray/DVD ISO):

I dig up the subject because it's also my case and I don't know what external drive to take to read MKV files, and especially to know if they are generally in NTFS or FAT32 since you can't transfer an MKV in FAT32 because of its size... (I have the problem with my 2.5" external drive).

Do those equipped with Wi-Fi or network input allow you to circumvent the transfer problem??

THANK YOU :=)

Hello,
Regarding reading MKV files, could someone clarify whether media players read files directly or if you need to go through your computer for playback?
In other words, can you play an AVI or MKV file with your media player without a connection to the PC?
If so, which models do you recommend?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Go take a look at Darty for a multimedia docking station for 99 euros, then you need an external hard drive for 69 euros, and there you have it, 170 total for 320g.

I recommend the babypeek from peekton. It has 2 USB inputs, an HDMI port, and an optical output for 70 euros. It supports all formats. However, I can't play some MKV movies like Star Wars. Is it due to the encoding of this movie, since it comes from DHTV because Star Wars is not available on Blu-ray?

Hello, excuse me, despite the ease of use of the Babypeek, I just received it and it can't read my external hard drive formatted for Mac. As soon as I go to the devices, it doesn't see it even though the logo on the front signals it. So if you have a solution, that would be great, unless my Babypeek is faulty? Thank you in advance.

The HFS+ format is probably not recognized (because it is not widespread); rather, try reformatting your disk to NTFS, and I believe your problem will be solved.

Hello,
same thing as Nina, and my hard drive is formatted NTFS.
What should I do?
Thank you.

emetech sells a multimedia player for 199 euros at Rue du Commerce or you can buy the Western Digital that connects your hard drive to the TV. I hope this helps you.

For my part, I bought a Storex HD TNT decoder (€69) that reads MKV files, etc. I connect a 500 GB self-powered hard drive to it, and boom, everything is connected to the LCD screen, and it's perfect.
So, it also gives you an HD TNT recorder to record a show while watching something else at the same time.
(Otherwise, there are other TNT decoders that read MKV files.)

Hi.. there is a lot of interesting information here..
I wanted to buy an Iomega Screenplay HD Director 1TB..
According to the list of formats, everything is supported... but since it is in Fat32, it’s true that it won’t be able to read files larger than 4GB?

Thank you.

Hi, I recently bought a 1000GB multimedia hard drive that plays MKV formats, it's the Samsung Yes We Can, I got it for €199 at Carrefour in March. I think I saw it in a Carrefour catalog last week for €139.

Here is the reference for the Lacie that reads MKV
My colleague bought it and has had no issues.

Lacie 301864 EK in 1TB or 301865 EK in 2TB

It makes sense that it costs less than €200 given the 500GB storage.
However, if it's for storing small amounts, it remains interesting since it decodes MKV.
Ultimately, it depends on the exact price....

26/10/2013.. I just installed PS3-media-server... Free and great.
It allows streaming all movies (and especially MKV..!) to any TV connected either via RJ45 or WiFi..
This nice product is not only for the PS3.. as one might think.
It can stream movies stored on any external device (like a NAS.. for example!).
No settings to configure in my case (except for the model of the server's network card).. Image and sound are perfect..
My PC is running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, no issues at all.

Hello, I'm also looking for the same thing, I found this, I'm not sure what to think about it:

In addition, it has Wi-Fi and is priced under €200.

The WD TV Live media player plays all video files, including MKV.
You just need to connect a hard drive via USB.
Very good product and without breaking the bank!!!!
See Darty, FNAC, Boulanger.
