ED2K and Kad not connected on eMule

Hello, I have a connection issue with eMule (0.49b); all downloads are blocked eD
2K and Kad are not connected. What should I do? Please note that I am a beginner, so avoid complicated steps. Thank you
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.3

      same for Gabrielle, Kad: ok; ED2K: not connected even though the 2 arrows are green
      emule version 0.50a
      I like the "check these boxes..." but which boxes, under which tabs?

    Thank you for your help taz067, I did what you told me, now I will try to restart because so far there is no change except that the preparation is apparently finished but eD2K and Kad remain disconnected. Is that normal?
