Photoshop closes on its own!!

Question

Hello,

I'm reaching out to share a very urgent problem that needs solving!!

I use Photoshop every day for my work, and after a (rare) crash on my Mac, I restarted it. But to my surprise: It starts to launch (the icon bounces) and then suddenly closes by itself just before entering the Photoshop interface...

I tried launching Gimp, and it does the same thing, except it tells me that a file "x11" is missing.
I’m not sure what to do anymore, knowing that I urgently need Photoshop! (I installed older versions of Photoshop, but the problem persists)...

Hello,

This is often due to corruption of the software's preferences file that "crashes." The name of this file, located in Library > Preferences in your user folder, probably contains photoshop and ends with .plist. You can throw it in the trash and try launching the latest version of Photoshop. It will recreate brand new prefs. Let us know how it goes...

It can often be quite tedious to search for corrupted prefs in a rather thick folder. There is a software called Preferential Treatment that does it for you and allows you to eliminate the ones it finds.

After an analysis of Preferential Treatment, here’s what it looks like:

If I delete those files, could it solve my problem? (considering they are system files)

Good evening,

.plist files can be safely deleted; in any case, I've never seen any issues arise from that operation. In fact, when you throw away a plist, or move it out of the preferences folder, and then relaunch the concerned application, it immediately creates a brand new one. So, let's sacrifice the questionable plists!

In some cases, with certain applications, settings can be lost, which is a minor inconvenience compared to software that no longer works.

Other than that, in your case, the files in question don't seem to have a direct link to Photoshop :-\ unless they are involved in processes used by that program :-) We'll see...

I deleted all the relevant .plist files, but it didn't help. A friend of mine (he's not a Mac expert lol) told me to reformat everything! Of course that would work... But for one, I don't have the time, and for two, I don't have the space to back everything up on my external hard drive. There must be a simpler and quicker solution...

So I'm still stuck, I've turned the problem around every which way but nothing works. Do you have any other ideas up your sleeve? :)

Hello,

No time? Given the duration of our conversation and if it takes a weight off your shoulders...

Before reformatting everything, there’s still the need to reinstall a clean system from the CD, choosing "Archive and Install" to keep your documents. It's annoying, you'll have to redo all the updates (OS, security...) up to the latest version. The solution: download the combo update for your Mac (Intel or PPC) and install it; it’s quite lengthy but much less than doing all the updates one by one.

One solution is to click on ALT, CTRL, and the SHIFT key at the same time, then click on the Photoshop icon to open it; this "reinitializes" (clears the memory and temporary files of Photoshop).
Then Photoshop opens, and click on yes and that's it... maybe this can help you? Good luck, after all this time you found the solution :-)
