The automatic start of games on PS3 is due to an option you activate in the console settings. If it is disabled, then yes, it's normal that they no longer launch automatically.

I don't have the console menus in mind, but once the game is inserted, you go to games (or network), then you select launch the game (generally, it automatically highlights when you start your PS3).

I might be mistaken about the manual launching of games; I don't have the menus in mind.
