Hello,
Since the beginning of the year, I have been in a residence where the connection is managed by Ucopia (which provides and "secures" the internet).
It is impossible to download via torrent or p2p.
I wanted to know if there is a solution?
Thank you
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 3.0.1

I'm at the student residence in Grenoble, and these losers have blocked YouTube and all downloading sites (Rapidshare, Hotfile, etc.), we can still access them by finding the IP addresses of the sites, but it's a real hassle and it doesn't work well...
Seriously, we criticize the Chinese government for blocking YouTube, and here companies do it legally and without question, I find it scandalous and an abuse of power.
I can't wait to get out of this residence which is costing me a fortune, with rent amounts that are completely unjustified and offering a completely censored connection.

When will they block Google and Facebook for us? It's pathetic... either it's ignorance or incompetence, but in any case, it's unacceptable, I really wonder if this is all legal...

Hello,

As far as I know, UCOPIA is a user management solution on a network, via a captive portal. There is no filtering in the box itself...

Yes, but we can configure a proxy for it.

I have been in a hotel since 4:30 PM and I am browsing and downloading without any problems. It must be the manager of the access who is limiting you, my friends (owners of the campsite, university residence...).

What you're saying is simplistic... a connection is a limited bandwidth and if it's shared, it seems to me a good management practice to limit access to downloading sites and YouTube, which are extremely resource-heavy...

It's a consumer mindset, thoughtless and irresponsible, really...

Ucopia Network, Estudines Annecy:
Very expensive rent, very small apartment. Slow network...
And above all, I wasn't warned that they had the right to watch and decide on my freedom to surf!
1 - Do they judge porn sites as evil? (and they block only the most well-known ones that are really ineffective...)
2 - They put anything in the porn category! (a social forum, and a completely normal humor video were deemed pornographic...)
3 - I like to chat on Skype and have to imagine my family with 6 pixels....

Don't get worked up, guys, I am the IT manager at a school and I can tell you that the latency on the network and the loss of synchronization do not come from Ucopia. Ucopia has other flaws that I am trying to fix elsewhere.

As for the filtering policy, as mentioned earlier, it is your network administrators who set it, not the creators and sellers of Ucopia. Regarding the monitoring of your browsing, it is a legal obligation; otherwise, any browsing on an illegal site implies the responsibility of the provider of access and not the surfer... Educational institutions prefer to pay for a Ucopia solution every year rather than risk a fine and legal troubles because one of their inhabitants went to a terrorist site...

In short, all this is to say that Ucopia has defects, but none of those you mention are correct. The only thing you can blame is the filtering policy of the institution...

Well, see you!

Biroute, do you speak from experience?

Excluding downloading and anything illegal, the quality of the connection is simply outrageous.
And for heaven's sake, how can we justify the blocking of my school's portal???
It's strictly impossible to have any form of entertainment, and even the websites needed for our studies are blocked... it's disgusting.
All this just to avoid investing in a proper infrastructure; I am outraged, and then they put it all on us for downloading... pfff, open your eyes for two minutes. In my school, with Wi-Fi and 1000 students, it works fine, so for 300 people on ethernet, it's not too much to ask.
The hypocrites are the ones who charge us exorbitant rents for services that are not at all up to the standard.

I would love to see how the person managing the network thinks: "Hey, this site uses bandwidth, well we're not going to invest anyway, let's blacklist it, let's cut it off."

I'm sure for him: bandwidth=youtube=p2p=piracy= BAD

Web 2.0? eLearning? online documentaries? VOD?
No? Don't know it?
Hello?!! We're in 2010, dude!

In the evening, it's obvious, the connection is completely overloaded, every 20 minutes or less, the connection resets, there are insane latencies, you can't even try to play online or do anything except read a text on the internet; m6replay, tf1, or the few uncensored video sites are useless as the video cuts out every 2 minutes, you have to restart the loading that takes 20 minutes, with ads and all that mess.

Hello, well guys, I found a trick to bypass the ucopia system, it’s risk-free and free, it’s a really simple thing
but I don’t know if everyone will be able to do it because you need a phone that can share a connection, like iPhones or Samsung Galaxy

1. With your phone, you will connect to the UCOPIA WiFi =)

2. Then you enter your username and password (don't close the page, okay?)

3. Last step, you share the connection with your computer

4. And you have access to everything without any blocking

It’s true it may be annoying, but it helps a lot, I hope I helped you, it’s a very simple and effective manipulation, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate! See you next time, bye =D

First, you need to have an account to log in, regardless of the service you want to access. It's important to know that Ucopia can filter all types of services: emails, instant messaging, web, downloads, etc.

You'll have to discuss this with your system administrator; that's all I have to say... It's really him who controls all access and accounts.

Be prepared for them to tell you that you are not there to play, though...

I believe that the residence or the network administrator has no right to interfere in how I manage my private life. Leisure activities are perfectly normal, especially since they are legal. I could very well spend my free time playing pick-up sticks and there would be nothing to say about it. Another ridiculous association: online games contradict studies. I'm not blaming you; I just want to point out that this argument is very shaky. On the other hand, I see no problem with keeping a record; it concerns our safety.

I would like to know one thing since you seem to know a lot about this: how is the connection managed in its entirety? Is it a single high-speed box, or several relays? Also, UCOPIA manages the Wi-Fi; can't we connect otherwise (Ethernet cable...)? I think the bandwidth issues would be less annoying ;)

But you are absolutely right.
However, there is a gap between what is legal and what is commonly accepted.

Students in this type of institution will naturally feel embarrassed to ask for access to games or Skype because they are expected to work... But you shouldn’t hesitate to ask because you are right, it is your private space, not just cages for the national education system.

UCOPIA is primarily a legal protection; what should be prohibited is anything that generally falls under the scope of legal condemnation... Everything else should be allowed, and you shouldn’t back down and hold this conversation with your school administrators.

After all, there's no doubt they will have arguments prepared for the kind of "troublemakers" you will become, so don’t go in with the idea of provoking a confrontation but rather with the mindset of having an adult discussion... Don’t underestimate this point as it is subtle: if you behave like children demanding something, you will encourage them to respond as they would to children; if you act like adults, they will be inclined to discuss and believe that you can manage (for example) your work time and your playtime and all that.

In short, it's not a straightforward or guaranteed matter...

The IT manager has the right to ban legal sites if this is stipulated in the service subscription contract, if such a contract exists. Those who consider this blocking unjust should refer to the service offer contract.

If this contract does not exist and the service is free, let's just say you're screwed, that's for sure. However, if the service is paid, there must be a contract somewhere, and this should be indicated in the clauses that compose it.

And otherwise, we shouldn't call people hypocrites; it's true that some want to download things that are illegal to possess at home without a license, but this blocking is unfair to those who have never had such an intention.

Hello All,

I am also in the same situation as you.
I even have issues when I browse normally; every 5 minutes instead of loading the requested web page, it asks me to log in again, it's a real hassle!
Do you also have this same problem?

See you later.

Hi everyone!

I tested the software and there's no way to get Lineage 2 to work with the free version, and I don't want to pay for the premium version to get the same result.

If someone has any other ideas for playing online without Ucopia blocking us...

I love it! I'm in a student residence in Lyon too, and UCOPIA is really such a joke... in the Google fields of Firefox or Chrome for quick searches on Google, UCOPIA blocks it while if you go to www.google.com it works, it’s so annoying!
And I really love the slogan "up to your professional expectations," lol
We know we have to restrict mass downloading of stuff to keep the networks from getting too saturated (thank goodness, or we'd all be lagging), so you have to download torrents from friends and tell them to send them to you afterward, the same goes for games. And yet I'm not against downloading!
UCOPIAAAAAAa!!!! haha they deserve a song, all the students in France should chip in to produce a number one single in student residences :)

Ucopia is just a simple filter managed by the person in charge of this machine and not by the company that manufactures and sells Ucopia; only the IT administrators of your residence decide what they offer. It also allows for the retention of all traces of your browsing for 1 year, which is mandatory (that's the law).
The IT manager is completely entitled to prohibit you from accessing any sites they want; they are even obliged to block sites that do not comply with French legislation.
So it's far from being foolish; on the other hand, you are the hypocrites, pretending that you want to download legal content!!!!!

yes, well, that's all very nice, but I'm also in Lyon in student housing and also blocked, but not necessarily for torrents but also for certain sites that are blocked while if we take another route (URL) it works, ucopia is nice but it really wastes a lot of time...
Is there really no way to cheat??? And what is Your Freedom??

Ah look, colleagues.

To be in student accommodation in Lyon, the quality is beyond mediocre.

Online gaming and videos are out of the question, downloading more than 10 MB is also impossible, the network is inaccessible for whole days, disconnections every 10 minutes, a speed that's abysmally low, .... They have found good cash cows in students who live with little resources and don't have the knowledge to complain effectively.

Long live Lyon, but what am I doing here :-(

Hum, I would just like to know if we can kindly ask the administrator to unblock access to Steam/Mumble and other perfectly legal platforms. Especially since most games today require an internet connection (often via Steam). This is quite problematic. On the other hand, when a student pays for a service 'internet access via Wi-Fi', it’s..., to gain access to the internet, and not just a few sites decided upon mysteriously... I do not question the filtering system; on the contrary, however, I find it excessive to pay for the service to only access a few sites... It’s like going to the cinema and only getting the sounds: Absurd.

Back to school 2010, always the same thing. And yet I am in a brand new university residence in Lyon with fiber optics. The quality of the connection is okay. I understand that everything related to torrents and illegal content is censored. However, I don’t understand why Skype is filtered... Personally, as someone mentioned above, my family is far away, and my girlfriend is abroad. I’m a student, and I must say that Skype saves my life to stay in touch with my loved ones. If I could get my own internet connection, I would do it. And I would share it with my neighbors to ultimately pay the same price as what I have here, which is completely censored. Yes, censored, like in Iran or China. Censored with value judgments.
We are in a place of study, of course, but we also have the right to live.
The allusion to cinema seems perfect to me; it’s like going to the movies without sound, yes, absurd. In any case, we shouldn’t have to pay for that...
I won’t blame Ucopia; apparently, it's the administrator... who makes me regret choosing a student residence...

For those interested, I don’t know if Windows Messenger works, but at least Amsn does, as it’s probably not very well-known...
And if anyone has managed to get Skype working, I’d like to know how?! It might just be a matter of configuration?!

So guys, I know you all want to download your latest Linux distribution via P2P, and that it's perfectly legal.

For now (I've only been set up for a few hours at the university), I haven't found a simple and elegant way to download legal torrents. However, for sites that seem violent, pornographic... there's a simple solution.

I've come to a disappointing conclusion: I can connect to a site that hosts porn videos, but it's impossible to access a run-of-the-mill dating site like Meetic...

To be able to visit your favorite sites, the best option is to use a proxy (e.g., http://www.highspeedreach.info/). Just enter the censored email address in the main bar.

Long live net neutrality!!!

Freely, a friend who means well.

I just want to use Skype, I don’t find it illegal since it’s the only way to contact my family abroad. Moreover, MSN is not blocked (it’s almost the same service), which suggests to me that there is some sort of discrimination. I would like to file a complaint because in the famous charter that we had to sign, it was not mentioned that VOIP services (Skype and companies) are blocked.
