Hello,
I've just encountered an awful problem: my laptop screen is displaying a large black bar in the center and the rest of the surface shows the same thing six times: the screen as it should be in lowercase. Furthermore, Windows won't start and I can only log in safe mode.
I uninstalled my graphics driver, which allowed Windows to start in normal mode, but the display issues are still there :(
Help! :)

HELLO
I have the same issue, my laptop screen is divided into 6 parts,
I also have an nVidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics card,
and I think it might be related to this card, but I'm just saying it might be
since this card is soldered to the motherboard, it's impossible to change the card.
Another thing is that your computer overheats a lot just before the crash
I didn't need heating in winter, so it might be related, right?
Anyway, please keep me updated!!! If anyone finds a solution to the problem, thank youuuuuuuuuu

Good evening, I have exactly the same problem, I have an Acer Aspire 5520, with an 8600M GS.
Has anyone managed to solve this problem?
My laptop is probably out of warranty, what solutions do I have? I am a student, I can't afford to lose my laptop, even though I know it's already dead.
Has anyone sent their laptop for repair, how much did it cost them?
Thank you for your future replies, and good luck for the rest.

Hello everyone
Problem solved.
I had exactly the same issue.
I confirm it's indeed the graphics card that's malfunctioning, it overheats and burns out.
As a result, I removed just the grill that gives access to the graphics card (it takes less than 2 minutes under the PC), 2 screws are enough to take it off before removing the fan.
I bought a card on eBay in Germany (it's the cheapest I found) for 35 euros including shipping.
Reassembled and there you go, it’s working perfectly again.
The issue is that you should avoid placing the PC on surfaces like a bed.
It’s true that the graphics card tends to heat up, so also remember to regularly clean the fans.
There you go,
A+

Hi Jimmy,
I would like to be able to access my graphics card since it seems I have exactly the same problem as you, but what does it look like?
I have an Asus F3S series that is no longer under warranty with a GeForce 8600m GS 256 MB.
Also, is it possible that my PC is bugging out solely because of this issue? Because mine freezes (black screen and no response) for no reason, or sometimes doesn't even turn on.
If it's only the graphics card that's acting up, do I absolutely need to get the same one again? Because I really don't want this to happen again. My laptop has always overheated since I've had it, and it's true that when it broke down the first time, I had it on a vinyl mat that traps heat.
Sorry for the poor writing, but I'm stuck with a QWERTY keyboard, it's a real hassle.
Please help, I don't want to buy a new laptop...

Hello jimmyobscene,
I just had a problem with the Geforce 8400M G graphics card in my ASUS W7S.
I easily removed the fan to access the graphics card, but I can't see how to take it out. On the other hand, you said you found it on eBay Germany. I might have looked incorrectly, but I haven't found anything in Germany, France, or anywhere else for that matter.
If you have a moment, could you help me?
Thank you in advance.

Mine is in repair, collected free of charge by Asus.
S...f seemed to be aware of this recurring problem, and so did Asus.
Either they replace it, but then I might have the same problem in six months, or they replace it with an equivalent, I just don't know what that means exactly: same performance ;( or same purchase price ;)
In the end, I'm waiting and I have no laptop anymore!!!

Here is the return from the customer service, the motherboard has apparently been changed.
But I have no information, the PC arrived like this, Windows Vista reinstalled and functioning, but the fan still runs as much, and the CPU is at 73°C permanently according to Everest.
On the other hand, there is 2GB of RAM while before I think there was only 1.5GB, and the graphics card seems to be a 9300M G (a simple evolution of the 8400M G apparently) but with a driver from June 2006, so I don't know if I can replace it with this one (https://www.nvidia.fr/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.28_beta_fr.html from December 2008?
If you have any other information,

For my laptop, same problem, 6 screens, a dealer says the motherboard is dead.
I’m picking up the computer anyway and fixing the problem myself!!!
Either restart with the installation disk, or by F10 or F12.
When it has restarted normally, go to Windows Update, then update history, and uninstall the graphics card update.
In fact, never accept updates for this card.
The computer that was good for the scrap is working perfectly again for nothing!!!

The problem is that over time the graphics card overheats and it becomes desoldered. It is impossible to resolder it with a simple soldering iron; special equipment is needed. Some have tried using a hot air gun or an oven. It hardly works or lasts very little at all. Beware of people who tell you they can fix it.
This kind of chipset cannot be replaced just like that.
I did an internship at a company that repaired laptops that had this kind of problem and many others.
You can contact them; they are very serious and well-equipped.
Go there on my behalf, they might give you a discount.
mobile solution, they have a website where you can find their contact details.

I just had the same issue as you last night.
The problem occurred after my laptop froze, so I had to remove the battery to restart it. Upon launching, the screen is divided into 6 with display bugs at times.
I can also only boot Windows XP in Safe Mode, not in Normal Mode.
My PC is an ACER Aspire 5520g, AMD Turion 64x2, GeForce 8600M GS 512MB, running Windows XP.

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem with an Asus W7S laptop and a Geforce 8400M G 128 MB graphics card.
I was typing a text on the train and the screen froze. Rebooting by forcing the power button resulted in the screen being divided into 4 and impossible to start Windows in normal mode.
I flashed the BIOS but it didn't work, uninstalled the Nvidia driver in safe mode, which allowed me to start in normal mode, but when I reinstall the latest driver, the computer becomes unstable again and the 6 screens are still there anyway.
Also, my laptop tends to overheat.
On the same subject, I found this:
https://www.clubic.com/forum/t/probleme-pc-portable-ecran-divise-en-6-au-demarrage/244656
and this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/
Basically, should I send it for repair, is it a graphics card problem?
Thank you for your advice.

I called S..f, where I bought my computer, at first and they knew about the problem. They referred me to Asus' customer service (I was still under warranty) who immediately sent a carrier to repair the machine (returned 10 days later).
After that, if you are no longer under warranty (2 years with Asus), it's a different story, I think.

I am no longer under warranty, but I bought the PC from S...f and it had a 1-year warranty. When I called S...f, they acknowledged the problem and also referred me to Asus, but Asus made it clear that everything would be at my expense. In short, they do not recognize the product's lack of conformity. They simply repaired your PC because it was still under warranty.
Hi Jimmy,
I wanted to know which model you had, because I opened my PC and tried to unscrew it, but I couldn't remove the graphics card.
I think it must be a model soldered to the motherboard.
My PC is an Asus Z53S and the graphics card is an 8600 GS.
Thanks in advance.
P.S: I was thinking of recycling it as a Linux server, no need for a graphics card in that case. But if I can fix it, that would be better.

Hello everyone,
The same thing happened to one of my friends (the 6 screens), so I suggested he recover his data on my external hard drive, which I then connected to my PC. As a result, my PC did the same thing shortly after.
I think it could be a virus, but it's very strange because no antivirus detects it. Additionally, I formatted the PC and the problem is still there.
Could it be a virus that targets the graphics card? No one has been able to answer me.

Hello everyone
I had the same hassle as you with a GeForce 8600 on an Asus laptop, honestly I thought I would have to throw my laptop away.
Then, by chance, I found someone to repair it.
The problem is the graphics chip needs to be replaced (a story of a solder joint that fails). Anyway, in 24 hours and for less than €200, the laptop is fixed and all the data is intact.

Hello, I have the same screen display issue showing the same thing six times. If you want, we can all get in touch and take action together against Asus, since all these machines display the same thing. Thank you for keeping me informed or for finding an amicable arrangement with the manufacturer to cover all these repairs.
Hello everyone,
I also think the problem comes from the graphics card because I also have the NVIDIA 8600 GS, but I'm not sure since a friend told me it might be the screen controller that has gone out (the part costs about 250 euros), but nothing is certain. What is for sure is that it's either the card or the controller. But I had the same problem before with my desktop PC and I changed the graphics card and everything worked fine again, so... But now my problem is on a laptop, so I'm not sure.

Hello everyone!!
I have the same problem as you on my Asus Portable Z53s. I was using the computer on a bed when it crashed.
So I'm going to try to see about changing the graphics card.
Thank you very much

Hello everyone,
I also have the same problem with the screen split into 6 on a Packard-Bell equipped with the Nvidea 8400 card.
Except that sometimes the display on the screen is correct and it is also correct on an external screen.
Is it really an issue with the card, the driver, or the laptop's display?
Thank you for your responses and your feedback.
Have a good day.
Philippe

I have an Asus Z37s. For your information, I also had the screen divided into 6. The repairman informed me that the graphics card was dead and that since it was soldered to the motherboard, everything needed to be replaced.
In a last-ditch effort, I reinstalled the original driver (with the original CD) for the graphics card.
For now, it’s working perfectly and it's overheating less...
