My keyboard is typing by itself, what should I do?

Hello pros!

I have a keyboard problem, one letter types itself and repeats hundreds of times if I don't hit "backspace." It just inserts itself everywhere so I always have to check my addresses and messages. I've run 2 antivirus scans and found nothing. This is the second time it has happened, the first time after a long while I couldn't even enter Win98, it crashed no matter the mode. I had to reformat. I don't want it to be the same this time, could it be a virus? I don't know what to do!!! I've dismantled the key and cleaned it, but it doesn’t change anything. Plus, it works when it wants to.

To help you, I have a laptop with 16 meg RAM, 512 meg hard drive, running Win98. Thanks for helping me.

try starting in safe mode and removing the keyboard firmware (controller) in the device manager
=>then you restart and retest
=>otherwise, you can also regenerate the registry in DOS by typing the command scanreg /restore

=>if the problem persists, then it's hardware

I don't think it's a virus or a software issue.

However, it's very likely a hardware problem, especially since it's a laptop... you're in trouble.

When you took the key off, you must have seen a spring (or a plastic piece) underneath, replace that with the one from the adjacent key... that way you'll know for sure.

Also, when it happens, try pressing the key in question, or even take it off, that way if it's a keyboard issue, you'll have clarity.

Even disassembled, it keeps repeating; I leave it disassembled and "tickle" it with an eyelash curler when it repeats, but that doesn't stop it. I find that really strange!

Thank you, Bibal, for your help, but what you're telling me to do, can I do that safely as a beginner in computing? I wouldn't want to make my problems worse. Tell me, what is the purpose of the controller if I can remove it? I admit that what you're saying sounds like Chinese to me :O)). But I'm willing to do it if it helps me and if I'm capable of doing it.

Hi! (it's a bit late for a response, but it might help others who have this problem)

I had the same issue as you. (for me, it was the letter "e")
I took the key off the keyboard, fiddled with the spring a bit, pressed down hard,
pulling it left and right....

It started working again right after! ;)

Hello, I have the same problem but worse. The keyboard is disordered. Let me explain: for example, "bonjour" turns into (bn26bn1264gr) with the numeric keypad activated and (bnkobnjkougr) without it. It's very strange; the letter that keeps repeating is the letter (q), but before it was something else. It keeps changing, and I have to use the onscreen keyboard in Windows XP. Please help me.

Well, I see that my problem is known, which is reassuring, but I can't find the right answer on the forum:
for me, my PC (a Dell running Ubuntu) makes a series of beeps upon boot, and out of nowhere, randomly starts producing lines of the letter u with a grave accent.
I disassembled the key once: no success. A second time, by fiddling with the springs: since then it no longer works, but I still have my lines of u regardless of the input area (password, email address, body of the message, word processing, etc.
Generally, I manage to block the phenomenon by selecting the entire area and deleting it, but it can start again at any moment.
Help!!!
