It's simple to find out about your sound card; just open "Run" in the "Start" menu and then type "dxdiag". A dialog box will open, and you will see in the sound section the model of your sound card and many other information that could help you.

Several options are available to you:
1 - Windows Update.
2 - The sound card integrated into the motherboard, so in 90% of cases, it's an AC97 codec.
3 - Have the installation CD that goes with the motherboard.
4 - If it's a PC like HP, Dell, IBM, etc., same: have the CD or go to the manufacturer's website and search for the thing by entering your machine's model.
5 - The coolest way to really know your hardware: turn off your machine, unplug it, open the PC, remove the card, note the references, brand, etc. of the card, put the card back, close the PC, plug in the power cable, restart the thing, go online to the appropriate website for your card.
And there you go. :)

You install software like Sisoft Sandra or AIDA and it will tell you what's inside the case. Otherwise, the invoice/doc of the PC probably contains this info...
