Hello, can someone tell me how I can find out if my DVD player reads AVI files? Is AVI and DivX different? Because I often see AVI movies labeled as DivX or Xvid? Thanks
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

Je ne lis pas les fichiers AVI XVID sur mon lecteur de salon, donc il faut que je les convertisse en AVI DIVX ? C'est ça ?

if you don't have the divx logo on your player, it means you can't play them

If my player says DivX but not Xvid, then I can play AVI files, right? Sorry, but I'm just starting with burning and it's not easy to understand all this. Thanks, ypsi71.

If you have the logo, that's good; the DivX supports several formats (.avi, .mpeg, etc.), to burn them you choose data disc and not video disc otherwise it won't work

    Hello misskelly,

AVI is a container format, not a video format.
Read this about it: http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet 10929 avi is a video format

What’s important are the codecs that are often mistakenly called "formats." You should have noted in your home theater manual which ones it can read.

    For more info on DivX:
    - https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/DivX
    About XviD read this:

To know the codecs of a video file, use one of these little utilities MediaInfo or GSpot for example.

Now, to find out what "formats" your player supports, aside from your manual, I know two fairly simple ways to do it.
    1) To find out easily, you can burn, on a rewritable CD/DVD RW, if you have one, a video file (a movie) with a DivX codec (not required but it would be better) and another with an XviD codec. If your player reads the second file, then it supports XviD.
    2) There is also a CD, created by the DivXTest project, which allows you to find out what formats are read by your home theater player. You can download it here: http://divxtest.isstar.net/
After downloading, you must burn the ISO file as an Image file on a CD, not as a data disc.

    Best regards

Thank you for your help, Ziggurat. But what I don't understand is that when I burn this file: desperate.housewives.S03E01.FRENCH.HDTV.XVID-VXZ in AVI format, I can play it on my home player, but when I burn this one: desperate.housewives.S04E09.FRENCH.HDTV.XVID-VXZ which is also in AVI format and to me the same, I can't play it. Yet I'm using the same DVDs (DVD+R).

The files you are trying to burn are subject to copyright and intellectual property rights.
If you do not own the original DVDs, it is illegal to obtain them -> illegal download.
