Hello,
despite numerous attempts, I can't seem to get over 60 points per race while being first and still no stars in my trophy case. Where is the technique???? Thank you for coming to my rescue. As for me, having 3 stars and 9999 points in online races, I think I can help you a little bit.
- For Rolyag, I believe that the time between us and the AI is related to how we've played; if we dodged a lot of shells, if we didn't hit any boxes or bananas, and if we had a good time, the console will reward us for the lead over the second player so that we can more easily achieve 3 stars (you can say what you want, but the more lead we have over the second player, the more chance we have of getting 3 stars in a cup!). Blue shells are inevitable most of the time (you have to be really lucky and hit a cannon just before it explodes to avoid it; it happened to me twice on the DK jungle course with the conveyor belt, it hit the road just below the belt after I used it ^^). To return to the AI's time after we cross the finish line, I allow myself to say that I know about this little "bug." I noticed, like you, that AI can catch up on all their lead just before the end, even if we had over 10 seconds advantage, and we see that we only have 3 or 4 seconds ahead... which is somewhat annoying... For the reverse, by doing a remarkable race, no slowdowns (no blue shells, no lightning, no pow, etc...), I had about 5 seconds ahead in mirror mode over the second player, and I looked at the time table right after finishing... 50 seconds ahead, which was impossible, let's admit, even if the second player got hit by everything before the finish line...
So I think you're right in saying that the console values hits and time! Adding in the way of playing (a lot of mini-turbos and being on one wheel as much as possible on a bike!)
Otherwise, to achieve 3 stars, there isn't really a trick to get there; we can recover in any area! Let me explain: to get 3 stars, you need to avoid bananas and boxes to a minimum, right? But if you do a lot of mini-turbos to make up for the time wasted due to a banana peel... or if, unfortunately, you receive 3 or 4 blue shells during the race and you're no longer in 1st, but you make up all the lost time just at the end by playing well... Or even if you totally mess up one race but crush it in the other three, you'll still get 3 stars! It all depends on how one plays; if we're 1st in all the races playing like a "normal" player who doesn't play every day and doesn't practice, we will never get 3 stars, let's face it...
Here's my way of thinking about the 3 stars; if you can't achieve them, try for 2 stars xD
