Hi!
If Windows Media Center keeps opening nonstop, even when you don't want it to, it's because the computer needs to process information that it can only do with Windows Media Center.
In summary, this means it shouldn't be uninstalled...
But I have still found a solution for those who really don't want this software anymore:
1- Go to the Start menu, then to "Default Programs" (bottom left)
2- Go to the last option: "Set your default programs for accessing computer programs"
3- Choose the option: "Custom"
4- Go to the "Default media player" section
5- There you can uncheck Windows Media Center.
This won't uninstall it, but it will act as if it is... There you go;D

Solution found! (For my PC)
Big problem with Windows Media Center that opens every time I click on an icon that has all taken its appearance. Unable to access the antivirus or go online. The computer recovery is blocked and of course, it’s impossible to disable it via the control panel. I've never seen anything like this. It's actually a particularly aggressive virus.
To get rid of it, I did as Aylas said, I created a new session as an administrator. In this session, I launched my antivirus which eliminated 2 nasties, then I disabled WMC via the control panel (explained by Yougg). When I returned to my main session, everything was back to normal.
Thanks to Aylas and Yougg.

Hello, having had exactly the same problem with an Acer Aspire 5920G to which I found a partial solution, I hope to help move things along for those who might have the same issue...
It started with Acer Arcade Deluxe, which I uninstalled, and Windows Media Center took over.
I eventually restored my PC to its factory state, and lo and behold, after retrieving my documents... I observed the processes that were added after I recovered the backup and one of them caught my curiosity:
QtZgAcer.exe (Launch Manager). I closed the process and magic happened, the Windows Media Center windows stopped trying to open. I closed Windows Media Center and it didn't reopen during the entire time I used my computer that day. I don't think this is a cure-all (I imagine it mainly applies to Acer, but if it can help...)
The next day, after restarting my computer, Windows Media Center opened again out of nowhere, without any warning signs (no DVD inserted/program running/image or movie open), I found the Launch Manager back again, appearing from who knows where. Again, terminating this process stops the incessant opening of WCM, so I am sure that on my end, it is this process that caused WCM to open and Acer Arcade Deluxe before that. I hope others in the same situation will also find this process and stop the infernal WCM from opening :p
If anyone has any idea where this process could be coming from and how to get rid of it for good, that would be excellent! Good to know, cheers :)

Hello isableue59,
On my side, I got rid of it for good a while ago. It seems to me that you can uninstall the launch manager program via the control panel, I can't guarantee that this is the right method (my memory is playing tricks on me...) but we can get rid of it "easily" :)
Keep us updated.

To prevent Media Center from opening at startup, you have the option inside MC settings to decide whether it will launch when your computer starts or only upon your request.
I am using a Medion and Vista.
I am using a Medion and Vista.
I had the same problem as soon as I got my new computer running Vista, but I quickly realized that WMC was there to annoy me more than anything else. By tinkering a bit (I love doing that ^^), I noticed that in a lot of shortcuts to programs/games, there was a command that was “-wmc” I believe. You just need to remove that part, and WMC won't start anymore :)
Hoping this helps you.
See you later

I provide the solution that allowed me to no longer see Media Center open when closing an application.
In my case, Media Center opened when I closed my game Guild Wars.
I did right-click on the shortcut and then in target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\GUILD WARS\Gw.exe" -mce I removed " -mce" and since then Media Center has not opened at all.
So check all applications to see if there is " -mce" at the end of the target.
mce stands for Media Center.

Hello everyone,
First of all, Ibeo, it's better for the proper functioning of the computer not to uninstall Windows Media Center.
It's a system program. Let's say that if we uninstall it, Windows Vista won't stop working, but some applications, or certain video or audio formats may no longer be playable.
For your issue Sombre Punk,
You shouldn't go to the "default settings" as you mentioned,
but to the "default programs," that's where you can choose to disable Windows Media Center.
For the explanation, see my previous post.

Does it cause problems on your PC???
If you have no issues, just leave it and don't use it; it's there, and that's fine!
Media Center cannot be uninstalled.
We can try to remove it "from scratch"... but it's not without risk: it's integrated into the system.
There you go

That's quite a good one ;) Something you don't use, no it's not "fine" to not be able to remove it! It just takes up unnecessary space.
I strongly encourage those who know how to do it to get rid of it, obviously. As mentioned earlier, it's not at all settled^^
Hi Nelly,
When you disable Windows Media Center, it’s normal for a window (or even two) to open to warn you that a restriction is preventing it... It works like that with all software...
To prevent these windows from opening, I don’t think I can help you... :s
The question is: is it possible to get rid of these windows?
Finally, if more than 500 windows have opened in 2 hours, it means Windows Media Center tried to open hundreds of times! It’s quite strange, really. If I were you, I would leave WMC open, minimize the program, and let it be while waiting to find a solution...
You probably have a system program that your computer requires to run WMC... So it keeps trying to open in a loop... :s

Yes, I can close the windows; I close the group and it closes them all (and usually after a while it tells me that I need to close groups because of low memory), but I close them all and after 10 minutes I already have 10 open! And the problem is that even if I turn off my PC and restart it without using it, the windows still open.
As for leaving WMC installed, I can't because even if I minimize it, it opens full screen again (and since my PC is a work tool for me, I'd rather have it open windows than the software).
How can I know if I have a system program that needs it?

I found the best method to disable Windows Media Center on Windows 7 that prevents working
I tried all the methods and nothing works
The only method I just found is:
Start menu, Control Panel, then User Accounts and Family Safety, click on Add an account
Then create an account, give it a different name and check Administrator, then create the account automatically the account is created
Now he is the Administrator, then once finished restart the PC now we find two administrator sessions, we log into the new session
After that the mic has become normal
And that way we can delete the first session, the same procedure as creating the new one except that we delete the old one

Hello everyone,
I had the same problem and I followed your advice and it worked for a few months, but for the past 2 days I have a window opening that says "Windows cannot open this program because a software restriction policy prevents it." and then I get another one that says "Unable to start Windows Media Center."
It's quite unpleasant because it prevents me from working as it freezes my computer (in 2 hours, it opened 581 windows). I'm on Vista, so if you can help me!
Thanks a lot!

Actually, it should happen (I think) when you close certain programs. What you need to do is on the shortcuts to these programs (you can recognize them because there's a small dark blue arrow on a white background on the icon), right-click, then "Properties", then in the "Target" field and at the end of what is written, there's the famous "-wmc". This command means that WMC should be launched when the program closes.
PS: you can remove the "-wmc" but definitely not the rest!

Windows Media Center cannot start because a software policy is preventing it from starting. (Basically, that's it)
