Excel 2007 display standard deviations on a chart

Hello,
In Excel 2007, I would like to display the standard deviations on my histogram. However, I want the standard deviation displayed for each column to be the one I have respectively calculated for each column.

I have already tried tweaking a few things, such as making each column a new series. The problem is that, for the moment, I have 15 columns and I want to have a different standard deviation on my graph for each of them, and I have 19 files to process with many more to come. So fiddling with things and inserting text afterward is becoming a tedious task.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

Thank you very much for the tip!
I have a follow-up question: when I perform the "manip," the error bars for X appear without any control on my part... in fact, I would only like the error bars for Y (because adding the error bars and then removing those for X is fine, but when there are many graphs to handle...). Thanks again...

Hello, I wanted to know if it is necessary to divide the values of the standard error by 2 when creating the error bars on a graph (upper value, lower value). Can the calculated STD Error value be applied to both values of the error bars?
I have a doubt....

Thank you

Don't you want to send us your file? Personally, I don't understand much, to be honest...

I can't send the file because the information it contains is confidential.

Here is my problem:

In my trials, I have three measurements per trial. I take the average and calculate the standard deviation. I group the results on the same histogram. But it is not interpretable if I cannot add the error bars (based on the standard deviations). And for each trial, that is, each column, I have a different standard deviation, so a different error bar. But in Excel 2007, I cannot assign a specific error bar to each column. At best, I have the same error bar for all my columns.

Is this a bit clearer?

(And thank you for your interest in my problem)

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem as you with the standard deviation bars.
Could you explain to me the technique LatelyGeek gave you, please? I don't understand what an "error zone" is.
Thank you.

Hello,

When creating the histogram, you only select your means and labels; the standard deviation value is below your means.

All repeat REP1
T1 T4 T1 T4
Mean 0.076470588 0.865546218 0 0.887700535
Standard deviation 0.130211433 0.163380018 0.124657442 0

After selecting the chart
LAYOUT
ANALYZE
ERROR BAR
OTHER ERROR BAR OPTIONS
CUSTOM
SPECIFY A VALUE
A tab opens and displays:
Positive value = {1}
Negative value = {1}
These initial values are useless; you delete them and select as the positive value
Standard deviation 0.130211433 0.163380018 0.124657442 0
You do the same for the negative value; delete ={1} and select
Standard deviation 0.130211433 0.163380018 0.124657442 0

Your standard deviations are present on your chart, and the variation is clearly visible.

A few questions I have no answer to,
Should one panic when the standard deviation goes below the minimum value of 0 and above 1 (either 0 and 100%)? Should I divide these values? By what, 2 or the square root of 2?

OK, everyone has done that, but it doesn't solve the problem: the standard deviations will be the same for each histogram bar, which is precisely what we don't want... We want each histogram bar to have its corresponding standard deviation.

The question is still not resolved...

Hello
I would like to know if anyone knows how to add error bars in a graph, like a curve with experimental points? (I didn't have any problems with previous versions of Excel...)
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Ah! You caught me off guard, Marylene...

I indicated where to find your order, but I never used it!

I don't quite understand what you mean, but it seemed to me (based on my memories of
math and physics
) that error bars can only apply to Y coordinates,
and never to X coordinates.

If you want to send me your file, I'll see what needs to be done (possibly).
To send a message and file to a specific person, use {Private Message}; but to access it, you need to register as a member (it's quick, easy, free, and provides additional capabilities).

oops, I don’t know how to send files, I’m a member but I can’t find {private message}... Anyway, yeah, the tab is about vertical error bars but there are also vertical error bars on the graph! Who knows why...

Indeed, the error bar is not customizable...

I’ve rigged something that gives a result that is “better than nothing,” it’s not an error bar, it’s an error zone. But at least it’s based on the standard deviation...

If you can settle for that, I’ll send it to you - it’s a bit long to explain...

Give me an email address.

Hello,

I would like to display the standard deviation bar and fill the area on the curve chart. That said, I absolutely need the bar on the X-axis and not the Y-axis. Also, I need the overall standard deviation, not a standard deviation for each point like Excel does all the time.

Does anyone have the answer to my problem?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,
If we could see a small part of the file in .xls format (save as Excel 97-2003) with clear explanations, the help would be more effective.

To attach a file:
Go to the Cjoint.com site
Upload the file
Create the link
Copy/paste the link in the next message.

Welcome to the new member!

You can:

* Click on my name to access my profile, and click on "Send him a message".

* Click under your name, at the top right, on the envelope in front of "0 new message(s)"; you'll arrive in Forum/Private messages, and you'll click on the right on "Create a private message" in orange; then at the bottom a window will allow you to Search for a member by name.

* You can finally send me an email, the address is listed in my profile (by the way, yours, the profile, is quite empty for now! that's a shame...).
