How to open a file with .lnk extension

Hello,
I received emails with archive files, some of which have attachments that end with the .lnk extension
I can't open them. What should I do? 
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

    Hi:

    Files with the .LNK extension. In Windows, these files correspond to links (or shortcuts) to another file or folder.

      I have the same problem, were you able to open these files? They were sent to me by email, so is it the sender's responsibility to send me not the shortcut but the actual file?....... Thank you.
