Hello, I broke my MacBook screen and I want to connect an external monitor using a VGA adapter. When I make the connection, nothing shows up on the external screen. Can you help me?
I would like the shortcuts to activate the external screen without having to look at the main screen since I obviously can't!!! Configuration: max os x . intel proc

The correct answer is Cmd (Apple) + F1!

@ Jarod: before jumping on others and flooding all the replies with your ridiculous comment, you should do your research! ezfag's answer is perfectly CORRECT and your solution is CRAP!!!
I have an iMac with a dead screen, I wanted to connect an external monitor to it, but it was in extended mode, while I wanted mirror mode. I just managed to do it by pressing Cmd + F1.
So thanks to ezafg for saving me from a sleepless night over this, and to you, go review your Mac manual and especially your manners.
