Hello
my problem is simple I can no longer restart the computer when I turn it on I land on a window asking how I want to open it: in safe mode, normally, etc. In all cases I end up on a blue window that gives me this message
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The Registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or its copy after restarting the computer and it starts again!!!!!
I know I'm not alone in this case is there anyone who has a solution

    A big THANK YOU!
to "Itznogood" (who found this solution, requested by Microsoft). Go look for a restore point in the folder c:\system volume information (system restore) and copy the missing elements.

"Make sure that the Boot options are properly configured to start from the CD drive first in your BIOS
    - Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, then restart the computer

Select the required options to boot the computer from the CD-ROM drive when prompted.
    - When the welcome screen of the installation program appears, press R to start the recovery console.
Type your Administrator password if you have one, otherwise, do not type anything and press ENTER.

When the prompt for %SystemRoot% (usually C:\Windows) appears, you can start typing the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your installation.
Windows will ask you which system to start.
Usually, you type 1 to access the prompt C:\Windows>

    Type these commands:
    cd \
    cd "System Volume Information"
    dir
You will see different directories, each representing an available restore point.
    Let's say it's this one: _restore{1960E6A0-C4CF-4F8D-A049-2E56255E51C0}.
    Enter these commands:
    cd _restore{1960E6A0-C4CF-4F8D-A049-2E56255E51C0}
    dir
Again, different directories named RP followed by a number will be visible.
Choose the directory with the highest number. This is also the one that stores the most recent restore point. In our example, we will take the directory RP45.
    Then enter:
    cd RP45
    cd snapshot
The prompt will then display: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1960E6A0-C4CF-4F8D-A049-2E56255E51C0}\RP45\snapshot.
    dir
Note that if the directories cd _restore{CLSID} or RPx are empty, go up one level by entering the command cd .. then explore the previous RPx directory.
The main hive files will be listed:
    _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
    _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
    _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
    _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
If your boot issue is due to the installation of a program, copy the SOFTWARE hive.
If your issue was caused by the installation of a device, copy the SYSTEM hive.
Regarding problems with user accounts, proceed to copy the SAM and SECURITY hives.
    For example, enter these commands:
    copy _registry_machine_sam \windows\system32\config\sam
    copy _registry_machine_security \windows\system32\config\security
Press the letter O to confirm the replacement of the file each time.
    Restart your computer normally...

There you go, 40 minutes later everything was working again!

      Hello,
I have exactly the same problem! I tried to follow the procedure you wrote but it doesn't work because after I get to the repair console by pressing the R key, it doesn't ask me for a password even though there isn't one, and I can't validate this step and move on to the next one. After a few seconds, C:\> appears => I can't get to C:\Windows> ; how can I proceed with the procedure? Thank you for your future response!

I managed to solve this problem with a simple chkdsk as described in the Microsoft support http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830084/en

I also have this problem, but in a recurring way!!!! :-(
While I haven't done anything different than usual the last time, my PC crashes on startup. All possible recovery methods (Last good configuration or ASR) are in vain, and the failure seems random.

From what I've found on various sources, this damage to the registry hive could come from:
    - A bad software installation
    - A faulty hardware connection (especially IDE cables)
    - A defective RAM stick.

We can recover the data either by Billou's method (link above) or by reinstalling via the Windows CD in repair mode.

That's what I've done 7 or 8 times!!!! Gradually, I've tried to retrieve updated XP drivers from the corresponding manufacturers. I've flashed my BIOS with the latest version and unplugged my burner. It's obviously advisable for everyone, along with a Windows update and a thorough antivirus scan.
I've also run Memtest86+ to check my RAM. It passed the basic test and is currently undergoing the complete test. I've unplugged my old burner, which was strangely recognized by my BIOS, and completely reformatted for a fresh install.
So far, it's running, but I expect it to come back one of these days.

If anyone has the final word on the cause of this crash or another lead that could trigger it, I'm all ears because I feel it's really going to start getting on my nerves!!!!!!

    My configuration:
    No network connection
    Asus A7N8X - E Deluxe
    Athlon XP 3200+ Barton
    Mid-range RAM PC 3200 2*256 MB
    Asus Radeon 9600 SE
80 GB Maxtor Serial ATA HDD
    LG-Goldstar DVD Reader
    Lexmark Z52

    Hello,

I am facing the same issue as above. I followed the tutorial provided by "Itznogood" but nothing works (Nothing happens when I click R to start the recovery console. It just takes me to another blue page showing at the bottom of the screen "Examining: disk 0 of 38115Mo with ID 0 on bus 0 via atapi...")

    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you in advance!

    Best regards

Hello, I have a better simple and quick solution. Download Hiren Boot CD 15, burn it to a CD or a bootable USB drive, boot the machine with it, choose the mini Windows XP option, then in the applications submenu, launch the registry repair wizard and restore with a single click.
